The livestock insurance scheme has emerged as a saviour over the years for landless, small and marginal farmers, and for those whose major occupation is dairying
Security if death of the animals due to HS, FMD, BQ or even by drought
Return of money in the event of permanent total disability

Implemented on a pilot basis during 2005-06 and 2006-07 (10th & 11th Five Year Plan in 100 districts
Extended to 300 districts from 10.12.2009

The premium is subsidized to the tune of 50%.
The entire cost of the subsidy is being borne by the Central Government
In 2011-12 total Rs. 40 crores was allocated
Only 6% of livestock is insured

Tag must be produced without temper while making claim
Owner have to pay 50% of premium only
2 animals per beneficiary for a policy of maximum of three years.
