MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents, Caregivers, Students and Staff,
Congratulations and thankyou to everyone for a
highly successful Term 1. There have been a
number of new initiatives and programs that
the school has initiated this year and
indicators are that the student learning
programs will be enhanced as a result.
As I indicated to you last year the school has
received an additional $680,000.00 through
the Federal Government’s National Partnership
(NP). This significant amount of money is to be
used to develop programs that will improve
student learning outcomes. After a very
rigorous evaluation of school based data two of
the areas that were most in need are literacy
and community engagement.
This term we have implemented a very detailed
and intensive three year professional learning
program to improve student literacy skills. All
students from Year 1 – 6 have had their
reading fluency and comprehension assessed
individually using a standard process and we
look forward to reporting their progress over
the year.
The school has also tried to engage more
effectively with parents and caregivers. The
NP funding has allowed us to employ a
Community Liaison Officer (CLO), two days per
week. Mrs Naffa (Maysoun) is at school
Monday and Friday and works with ALL
parents. She has organised parent programs
that run almost every Monday with sessions
being held in English and Arabic.
Last week we held our first parent teacher
conferences for 2012 and it was great to see
so many of you throughout the year. The
teachers have said that they really enjoyed
meeting with parents/caregivers and that
spreading the conferences over the week
meant more time could be spent with you.
Please let us know if you found this more
valuable. Thank you for taking the time to work
with us in educating your children.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
What a wonderful day we had yesterday celebrating everything that
makes us unique at our Multicultural Day. I enjoyed talking to students
and their families about what is important to them and what it means to
be part of our great country. The students enjoyed their trip around the
world, visiting different countries, having their passport stamped, and
learning something new about a place they have heard of but never
visited. Thank you to all the staff who shared a small part of what makes
them unique with our students as well. Another big thank you to our
parents and carers who shared a food item. We had so much food and it
all tasted delicious! There were plenty of full stomachs by the end of the
day. Such a big day, but a great way to end the term!
I have been contacted by concerned members of the public regarding
our students’ safety when walking to and from school over the last
month. We also had a student from our school hit by a car when crossing
the road last week. Thankfully the student was not injured. I ask all
parents to take every opportunity to remind children about road safety.
This is something that should happen regularly. An insert is included in
the newsletter and further information can be found through the website
www.safetytown.com.au
It is also important that adults remember we are role models when it
comes to road safety. Unfortunately there are still far too many parents
and carers who are modelling unsafe practices when crossing the road
or picking up students in the afternoon.
Students should have received their half-yearly report by now. Please
take the time to read through the report with your child. A letter was
included with your child’s report that has some ideas about how to
discuss learning with your child. Parents and carers are also invited to
discuss their child’s report and learning at the beginning of next term.
Interviews will be held from Tuesday 24 July until Friday 27 July.
Information on how to make a booking is included in this newsletter.
As Term 2 draws to an end, I thank everyone for their commitment to
learning at our school. Have a well-deserved break and I look forward to
seeing you back next term!
