Midweek MovieThe Midweek Movie for Wednesday, September 9,

is Hidalgo starring Viggo Mortensen.Held yearly for centuries, the Ocean of Fire—a

3,000 mile survival race across the Arabian desert—was a challenge restricted to the finest Arabian horses ever bred, the purest and noblest lines, owned by the greatest royal families. In 1890, a wealthy sheik invited an American, Frank T. Hopkins, and his horse to enter the race for the first time. During the course of his career, Hopkins was a cowboy and dispatch rider for the U.S. cavalry—and had once been billed as the greatest rider the West had ever known. The Sheik puts his claim to the test, pitting the American cowboy and his mustang, Hidalgo, against the world’s greatest Arabian horses and Bedouin riders—some of whom are determined to prevent a foreigner from finishing the race. For Frank, the Ocean of Fire be-comes not only a matter of pride and honor, but a race for his very survival as he and his horse attempt the impossible.

This 2004 Adventure/Western is 2 hours and 16 minutes long and will be shown at and 6:30 p.m. in the Chapel. Please note the 11:00 a.m. Midweek Movie Matinee has been cancelled due to the Flu Shot Clinic. Rated PG-13 for adventure violence and mild innuendo.

9/11On Tuesday morning,

September 11, 2001, mem-bers of the Islamic terrorist group al-Qaeda hijacked four airliners as part of a series of coordinated at-tacks against targets in the United States. The Twin Towers in New York City were hit by one plane each, American Airlines Flight 11 and Flight 175, while American Airlines Flight

77 was crashed into the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. The fourth plane, United Airlines Flight 93, is thought to have been headed for the White House, but passengers overtook the hijackers and the plane crashed into a field in rural Pennsylvania.

More than 3,000 people lost their lives during what the deadliest terror attack on U.S. soil to date. Property and infrastructure damage amounted to over $10 billion. The attack is thought to have been or-dered by Osama bin Laden, who was finally located and killed in Pakistan by U.S. Navy SEAL Team Six in May 2011. The 9/11 Memorial Museum occupies the sites where the Twin Towers once stood.

Sometimes it’s important to work for that pot of gold. But other times it’s essential to take time off and to make sure that your most important decision in the day simply con-sists of choosing which color to slide down on the rainbow.

—Douglas Pagels

—Albert Einstein
