Sunday, January 6, 2019 St. Kilian Catholic Church - www.stkilian.com 2 U Like many parish priests, I have taught courses in theology in the parishes where I have served since I was ordained in 1973. These courses were based primarily on information giving. Only a small component of the course was designed to be experiential, that is, providing an opportunity for prayer and reflection so that a religious experience might happen for the student. This is very unfortunate. Christianity began with an experience of a man named Jesus of Nazareth. The encounter that his disciples had with this itinerant rabbi was to profoundly affect their lives after their crucified teacher appeared to them gloriously triumphant over death. They began to realize that Jesus was so much of God, that he clearly was God. How can we get to know Jesus in an intimate and highly personal way in our modern world? We live our lives at a breakneck speed. Even our leisure time is filled with action and noise and commotion. It is extremely difficult to find quiet time. But it is impossible for God to speak to us in the silence of our hearts, when there is so much chatter. Personal prayer is an opening to God. It means carving out quiet time each day, and allowing God to capture us, so that we can come to know at the deepest level the One who loves us more than any human being on earth. “Be still, and know that I am God.” Another important way to know the Lord is through Small Group Sharing of our faith experience. “Where two or more are gathered in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” LIVE LENT 2019 “ALL I WANT IS TO KNOW CHRIST AND THE POWER OF HIS RESURRECTION.” (PHILIPPIANS 3:10)

Christmas Peace, and Happy New Year 2019 Father Bruce

Epiphany of the LordThe song "We Three Kings" details the gifts of the Magi, but do you know what you'resinging? "Born a king on Bethlehem's plan, gold I bring to crown Him again." This oneis the most straightforward - gold symbolizes the Kingship of Christ. "Myrrh is mine: itsbitter perfume breathes a life of gathering gloom." Myrrh is an embalming spice.Already at Christ's birth, we have the symbolic reminder of his death. "Frankincense tooffer have I. Incense owns a deity nigh." In many religious traditions, incense symbol-izes prayers rising to heaven. In some pagan traditions, it is thought to help "call down"the deity. The gift of frankincense symbolizes Jesus' role as the Great High Priest, sancti-fying the world through his sacrifice.

ST. KILIAN SOCIAL JUSTICECOMMITTEE

Our parish established a new SocialJustice Committee and began meeting in

September, with the goal of learningwhat Catholic Social Teaching is, what itasks all of us to do, and to act by sharing

information with our parishioners.

This is the first in a series of bulletinarticles about Catholic Social Teaching.

The Church’s social teaching is a rich treasure of wisdom about building a just society and living lives ofholiness amidst the challenges of modern society. – United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB)

There are currently 7 themes of Catholic Social Teaching. The first theme, from which all future themes flow, is

LIFE AND DIGNITY OF THE HUMAN PERSONThe Catholic Church proclaims that human life is sacred and that the dignity of the humanperson is the foundation of a moral vision for society. This belief is the foundation of all theprinciples of our social teaching. In our society, human life is under direct attack fromabortion and euthanasia. Human life is threatened by cloning, embryonic stem cell research, and the use of the death penalty. The intentional targeting of civilians in war or terroristattacks is always wrong. Catholic teaching calls on us to work to avoid war. Nations mustprotect the right to life by finding effective ways to prevent conflicts and resolve them bypeaceful means. We believe that every person is precious, that people are more importantthan things, and that the measure of every institution is whether it threatens or enhances thelife and dignity of the human person.

Reflect: Think about these questions to examine your conscience in light of theme #1 –

• Do I respect the life and dignity of every human person from conception through natural death?

• Do I recognize the face of Christ reflected in all others around me whatever their race, class, age, or abilities?

• Do I work to protect the dignity of others when it is being threatened?

• Am I committed to both protecting human life and to ensuring that every human being is able to live indignity?

Why do I Volunteer? By Jennifer Miller

Hello and welcome to St. Kilian’s Rectory. My name is JenniferMiller and I am your Parish Secretary, having joined the staff at St.Kilian’s in July.

I’ve been a parishioner of St. Bernard’s Parish for the past 8 years.I have enjoyed many ministries and organizations within my parish. For this school year, I am continuing my spiritual journey as aCatechist by enriching the faith of our 6th and 7th graders towardsConfirmation. In addition, I am working with the RCIA children’sgroup as they prepare for Baptism, Communion andConfirmation. It’s very important that we stress to the youth thatGod is always with us. Also, Jesus is our best friend and one whomwe can trust with our lives.

Finally, I am a member of the Welcome Committee. Our group introduces the new parishionersto our parish and we answer any questions that they may have. We guide them through thevarious masses, sacraments, bible studies, religious education, various committees and groups thatwe offer.

The reason for volunteering is that I enjoy working with the youth and guiding them throughtheir spiritual journey with God. As we move forth in this faithful journey, the children not onlylearn from our teachings of the lessons and the gospel, but also vice versa. Their young mindssometimes see a different view than we do as adults. I believe that it’s important to enrich thefaith life of our children. We pray together both spiritually and emotionally so that God canlisten to our prayers.

As a new member of the St. Kilian family, I would like to say “Thank you” for being so kind, understanding and welcoming me to the parish. God has given a gift/talent to each one of us andas a community of faith, we’re able to exercise these gifts. I’m encouraging everyone tovolunteer - whether it’s greeting the parishioners at the front door before mass, making a cakefor a family who suffered a recent loss, ushering someone to their seat or singing in the choir. We all can put our faith into action as a community and see the good in others!

Why Do YOU Volunteer? As we continue our stewardship series of sharing theinspiring stories of how and why our faith community finds ways to serve, weinvite you to send us your story! Just contact the Stewardship Committee at(516) 249-0127 or e-mail Jane at [email protected]. We look forward tohearing from you

know of some resources that you haven’t tried. Or perhaps you may simply need someone to talk to.Please know that there is no need to suffer alone. LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATION FORTHE WEEKWe all have had the experience of walking into a darkroom and searching for the light switch. If we are reallyunfamiliar with the space, anxiety, uncertainty, disorienta-tion, and even fear can easily arise. Once we find the light, all is illuminated and we are at peace. Our light has comeinto the world! The glory of God has been revealed!Today's feast of the Epiphany teaches us to look to ourSavior, Jesus Christ, for the way to truly be the humanbeings we were created to be. He shows us how toprioritize our lives, order our relationships, care forcreation, and live as daughters and sons of God. God'slove and creative power is universal, transcending all racesand nations. Jesus brings the light of peace to a brokenworld that still struggles to understand itself and to youand I who also struggle to understand who we are. Maywe find ourselves overjoyed that we have found our truthand allow Jesus to bring light to the darkness of our lives!

¿Qué leofreces tú a Jesús?
