Discovering Puerto Rico

and its Attractions

Caguas Botanical and Cultural Garden The Caguas Botanical and Cultural Garden is the ideal place for nature lovers looking for a place to harmonize the centuries old Carib-bean history with idyllic nature surroundings. The Garden promotes a lot more than respect for nature: it is also an exponent of the Island’s history. Sugar cane production and commerce are inseparable elements of the Caribbean’s evolution during the last centuries. In the Garden figured as witnesses the centenary ruins of the ancient San José Sugar Plantation, as well as the rebuilt old large hut to house slaves, whose invaluable sacrifice represented an important element in the development of the creole personality. As a complement, in the Garden, there are important archeological deposits of the Taino Indians that inhabited Puerto Rico. The CBCG is located just 30 minutes away from San Juan.

April is Month of the Military Child in the Army and this year’s theme is Celebrate Mili-tary Children: The Strength of Our Future on Army garrisons. More than 1.7 million children under the age of 18 have at least one parent serving in the Armed Forces. It is estimated that more than 900,000 children have had one or both parents deployed multiple times.

The Child, Youth and School Services programs will hold special events to honor Soldiers’ Children. These events will stress the impor-tance of providing children with quality services and sup-port promised through the Army Family Covenant. The month long celebration, first held in 1986, reinforces to Military Children that they are, indeed, a key part of the Armed Forces community.

Child Abuse:Five Preventive factors

THE BLUE RIBBON STORYBy: Ms. Wilda DíazFamily Advocacy Program Manager

During April the Family Advocacy Program is distributing a blue ribbon and pin as a symbol for child abuse/neglect prevention. The story behind this symbol is as follows: In the spring of 1989, a Virginia grandmother began the blue ribbon campaign as a tribute to her grandson. The three-year-old died at the hands of his mother’s abusive boyfriend. Since that time, concerned citizens all over the country have worn the blue ribbon as a symbol of the need to prevent child abuse and neglect.

Protective factors are conditions in families and communities that, when present, in-creases the health and well-being of children and families. They are attributes that serve as buffers, helping parents who might otherwise be at risk of abusing their chil-dren to find resources, supports, or coping strategies that allow them to parent effec-tively, even under stress.Research has shown that these protective factors are linked to a lower incidence of child abuse and neglect.Nurturing and AttachmentA child’s early experience of being nurtured and developing a bond with a caring adult affects all aspects of behavior and de-velopment. When parents and children have strong, warm feelings for one another, children develop trust that their parents will provide what they need to thrive, including love, acceptance, positive guidance, and protection.Knowledge of Child Parenting and Child an Youth DevelopmentDiscipline is both more effective and more nurturing when parents know how to set and enforce limits and encourage appropriate behaviors based on the child’s age and level of development. Parents who understand how children grow and develop can provide an environment where children can live up to

their potential. Child abuse and neglect are often associated with a lack of understanding of basic child development or an inability to put that knowledge into action. Parental ResiliencyResilience is the ability to handle everyday stressors and recover from occasional crises. Parents who are emotionally resilient have a positive attitude, creatively solve problems, effectively address challenges, and are less likely to direct anger and frustration at their children. In addition, these parents are aware of their own challenges—for example, those arising from inappropriate parenting they re-ceived as children—and accept help and/or counseling when needed.Social ConnectionsEvidence links social isolation and perceived lack of support to child maltreatment. Trusted and caring family and friends provide emo-tional support to parents by offering en-couragement and assistance in facing the

daily challenges of raising a family. Supportive adults in the family and the community can model alternative parenting styles and can serve as resources for parents when they need help.Concrete Support for ParentsMany factors beyond the parent-child rela-tionship affect a family’s ability to care for their children. Parents need basic resources such as food, clothing, housing, transporta-tion, and access to essential services that address family-specific needs (such as child care and health care) to ensure the health and well-being of their children. Some families may also need support connecting to social services such as alcohol and drug treatment, domestic violence counseling, or public benefits. Providing or connecting families to the concrete supports that fami-lies need is critical. These combined efforts help families cope with stress and prevent situations where maltreatment could occur.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon (PG-13)Thursday, April 21st at 5:30pm

The Twilight Saga’s second installment finds Bella and Edward feeling pretty good - or at least a little less broody - about the state of things after having ironed out some of the finer points of in-terspecies dating. Natu-rally, it doesn’t last long. Bella’s 18th birthday par-ty turns into a bit of a fiasco when Edward’s brother nearly kills Bella

in a fit of bloodlust. It’s an awkward situation, to be certain, but while Bella is willing to forgive and for-get, Edward elects to leave town - permanently. The decision sets off a chain of miscommunications that lead to, among other things, cliff diving, a visit with vampire royalty, a supernatural love triangle, and a close call with a scorned vampire whose mate met a gory end at the hands of the Cullens.
