~In conjunction with the College Activity Week, the Talent Show audition was held on 24th August 2016, at our Multipurpose Hall. The objective of this event was to select the nalist for the Vision Street Carnival Talent Show.

The audition was organized and paneled by the English Department lecturers: Ms. Melissa, Ms. Zahraa, Ms. Fazlieza, and also Ms. Zulaikha. We may say that Vision College has its own Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, Randy Jackson and Demi Lovato (American Idol judges).

26 acts from d i e r e n t

categories auditioned in front of the beautiful yet strict judges. There were singing, dancing, magic show as well as acoustic acts.

Throughout the audition, we witnessed some great performers singing their hearts out, acoustic bands/groups serenading with the sounds of plucked guitars, and also dancers beautifully gracing the

audiences with their creative moves and poise. Some of the participants managed to ght their anxiety and nervousness throughout their audition. Through the eyes of the spectators and judges, all participants did their best with their friends' support.

It is hoped that such activity or event may attract more students to participate in the future. Who knew that Vision College had these many talented students? It's about time they show their hidden talents and gifts to the world! As Benjamin Franklin said, “Hide not your talents, they for use were made. What's a sundial in the shade?”

Day 2 & 3 : Indoor Games

An Outcome-Based-Education (OBE) Training Workshop was organized on 25th to 26th August 2016 for Vision College's academic sta. The objective of this 2-days course was to increase the competency levels of academic sta in OBE practice. The speaker, Haji Mohamed Nadzri Bin Mohd Yuso is a senior lecturer at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) and a member of the MQA panel.

In a nutshell, OBE focuses on student-centered learning and the main

intention of practicing OBE in a teaching institute is to ensure that all students can achieve the end-goal of their educational experience. This include possessing all the eight learning outcome domains – Knowledge, practical, critical thinking , social, professionalism, lifelong learning, entrepreneurial and leadership.

The course covered 4 main topics which include Malaysian Qualication Framework (MQF) and Act 679, writing learning outcomes, mapping outcomes and assessment as well as student learning time. There was also a Q&A session between speaker and participants to clarify any doubts or issues.

In conclusion, the training was denitely very informative as it gave the academics ideas on planning their teaching according to the MQA guidelines and required course outcomes.

Towards Continuous Improvement ...

In conjunction with College Activity Week, an indoor games tournament was held on 25th and 26th August 2016. The objective of the tournament was to test the students’ skills in addition to instilling the spirit of competitiveness. Kicking things o on the 25th were pool and carom. The male pool tournament witnessed several big names from past tournaments battling it out for the title of champions as well as bragging rights. However, the newcomers proved that they were no pushovers as big name players Jason Done and Sachindran were swiftly eliminated. The nal was a showdown between Ridzwan Marasad and Imran Haris with the latter edging it in a closely contested aair. The female category was more straightforward whereby massive favourite Cassandra stormed her way to victory in convincing fashion. The

carom tournament was more evenly contested as the pool of players was of very similar skill levels. Zulkeee Barin and Viknesvary

Vasandakumar who are relatively fresh in the carom scene emerged victorious in the male and female categories respectively.

The second day began with table tennis followed by foosball. As one of the more popular sports, the table tennis tournament lived up to its expectations as high levels of skills were on display. Wezie Moshin emerged champions by demonstrating great dexterity and nesse throughout the entire tournament. The foosball tournament also garnered a huge

spectatorship. One of the favourites, Noor Firdaus started strongly with convincing 2-0 victories in the quarter-nals and semi-nals respectively. In the nal, he was pushed to the limit by Kamal Kamsani before taking the contest 3-2.

All in all, the 2 days of competition proved to be a success as students thoroughly enjoyed themselves whilst competing against one another Leonard

On 6th August, the DMI Club organized a 2-days 1-night camping trip to Lembah Pangsun eco-resort which is located in the lush tropical forest of Hulu Langat, approximately 1 hour from Vision College. Attended by 50

students and 2 lecturers, the objective of this trip was to create a relaxing environment for participants to bond whilst partaking in various outdoor activities.

We commenced our journey at 2 p.m. via bus. It was such a fun-lled ride as we sang and played games such as ‘poison box’ which consisted of trivia questions.

Upon arrival at our destination, we immediately proceeded to our designated camp site. We spent the rest of the evening on outdoor activities such as ‘Rope Jump’, ‘XOXO’ group performances and dodge ball. The highlight for the day was a “Masterchef Competition” where participants had to prepare meals using selected ingredients, which would then be judged by the lecturers.

We began the next morning by preparing breakfast for all the participants. Then, we started our jungle trekking activity, with the assistance of a guide, into the deeper parts of the forest. As we hiked, we were fascinated by the natural wonders of the surrounding ora and fauna before reaching the beautiful waterfall area an hour later. We spent some time enjoying the cool and fresh water stream before returning to our camp site.

We had a quick lunch before packing up for our return journey to Kelana Jaya. All in all, it was certainly a memorable 2 days as all attendees thoroughly enjoyed themselves

As part of the Vision Street Carnival, a blood donation drive by the National Blood Bank as well as Body Mass Index (BMI) and blood pressure checking by the Nursing department was held. A total of 34 blood donors registered which was fewer than expected. Nevertheless, it was denitely a heart-warm-ing experience to witness such caring souls. As for the BMI and blood pressure check, it was reported that there were 69 participants. Initially scheduled as a comple-mentary service, it was certainly encouraging that the pursuit for a healthy lifestyle is on the rise.

Sing for Charity a.k.a Open Mic was one of the activities being held during the Vision Street Carnival. Priced at RM1 per song, all proceeds were donated to the National Cancer Council Malaysia ( M A K N A ) . Registration for the

event was open throughout the day, starting from 11 am until 5.30 pm. In order to cater to a diverse crowd, we oered more than 400 songs from seven dierent languages: English, Malay, Mandarin, Tamil, Thai, Korean and Japanese.

At such an aordable price, both students and sta were all pumped up to perform their desired songs. The event was a consistent crowd puller as there were continuous performances throughout the day. Furthermore, there were also duets and group performances involving both sta and students.

All in all, it was a truly a successful aair as we used the power of music to celebrate our uniqueness and unity without any boundaries.

A haunted house was organized in conjunction with the Vision Street Carnival recently. Preparations and discussions were held several weeks earlier but we only being setting up the house 3 days before the main event. It was denitely a race against time but cooperation and teamwork within the club guaranteed it was a great success.

The biggest challenge for us were to build-up excitement and creating a haunting environment for all participants. Thus, we had to ensure that the decorations were tting of a real haunted house! Besides decorations, costume and makeup for the “ghosts” were also essential in reenacting an actual haunted house.

Overall, our haunted house garnered a lot of positive feedback from participants. We

received approximately 200 visitors during the day of the event and judging from their screaming and shouting, it is safe to conclude that they certainly had an unforgettable and chilling experience!

You probably think that Vision College students are classic old boring teenagers/young adults, but they are not! The talent show nale that happened

on the evening of 27th August 2016 revealed everyone's secret gift. The participants were great and all of us spent one of the best evenings at the Vision Street Carnival.

16 acts from the original 26 that auditioned made it through to the grand nale. The nale comprised of the following categories: Acoustic group, Solo Singing, Solo Dance, and also Magic Act. The students, dressed in their best stage outts, were full of condence and enthusiasm prior to their performances. All performers provided the audiences with a rich, varied and highly entertaining programme of spectacular events. The talent show was hosted by two

beautiful “The Linguists” Club members: Rabiah and Rupaida.

The Talent Show was paneled by Ms. Wei Yee, Mr. Say Wei and Ms. Susie who were denitely held spellbound by the nalists' performances. I might say that it was a huge turn out! This much anticipated event pulled the Vision community; from students and sta together, where we put aside classwork and other responsibilities to come together and celebrate the event. The event ran smoothly with the help of the committee members, show crew and support from the audiences. The main reason behind organizing this competition is to nurture the intrinsic qualities of students and remove the fear of stage among students, which

helps in personality development too.

At the end of the show, the judges had a brainstorming session over the neck to neck performances to come to their judgment. The top ve winners were announced during the prize giving ceremony and they certainly deserved to be winners.

So here is the list of winners:

Overall, the Talent Show was legendary; we were able to enjoy and joined in the excitement. I believe no one is going to forget what happened during the Talent Show or even the Vision Street Carnival itself, mostly because everyone lmed the performances, making great memories together.

There was a nal twist for the penultimate event of the Vision Street Carnival. Named Battle of the Bands, contestants were pre-selected based on the lowest hostel cleanliness scores and they were required to “perform” and “rock out” on stage using cleaning tools as musical instruments. The main objective of this event was to raise awareness on the importance of hostel cleanliness in a fun-lled manner.

The rst group which were made up of all guys left much to be desired as they produced a dampened performance of “It’s My Life” (by Bon Jovi). The nal

2 groups, consisting of all girls were much more encouraging. The rst of the all girl group showcased a solid performance with Joan Jett’s “I Love Rock & Roll” as they even got the audience to sing along intensely.

The nal all girl group also demonstrated that girls can rock harder than guys during their “rendition” of Queen’s “We Will Rock You !”. In addition, the “guitarist” also wowed the crowd with her strong solo performance on the “bass guitar” (a.k.a the broom in this case!)

All in all, the event inspired the crowd to channel their inner rockstar, which culminated in a tting nale for the Vision Street Carnival.

The opening event for the inaugural Vision Street Carnival was the Costume Parade. A total of 11 groups participated in this colourful event which commenced at about 9 am.

From traditional to creative modern-classic, all 11 groups showcased a diverse selection of costumes and accessories that r e p r e s e n t e d their own specic theme.

In addition to the parade, each group also conducted an individual performance that was relevant to their group's

theme. Performances include contemporary and classical dances as well as martial arts! The audience watched on in amazement as they were enthralled by the participants' creative and meticulously designed costumes.

To determine the winner, a joint scoring system was used whereby the judges'

choice and the audience's votes, each counted for 50% respectively. The panel of judges which included Ms. Lay Yean, Ms. Zulaikha and Madam Tang were very impressed by the participants' display and dedication, resulting in a closely contested aair. This was also echoed as the general voting sentiment showed minimal dierences between the 11 groups.

After much deliberation and several votes counting, the top 3 groups were announced. The Olympians were the eventual winners followed by Borneo Culture and Horror which came in second and third respectively. Overall, the Vision Street Carnival Costume Parade

was a major hit as both the participants and audience thoroughly enjoyed themselves. We are certainly looking forward to more similar events in the future.
