Cable Clean-Up and Identification

problem: - full cable trays, impossible to pull cables for new equipment- manpower bottleneck during LS1

compromise:1. partial removal of unused cables where possible 2. cable identification campaign (flagging cables that can be removed during an intermediate shutdown)

Page 3: LIU-PSB Activities during LS1

Cable Identification

documentation:- layout of the BCER, BOR, BAT exists: (Drawings PS_EY___7001, 7002 and 7012)- integration of the cable trays exists on Euclidcable data base:- cables modified or installed after 1989 are inserted in the cable data base (6000

cables)- cables installed before 1989 are documented in hand-written lists (11000 cables)

during LS1, a campaign to identify the obsolete cables in the PSB will be coordinated by D. Hay and F. Chapuis

- identify the obsolete racks; list of racks will be prepared, every equipment group responsible to mark unused racks.

- identify the cables to remove; equipment owners have the responsibility during LS1 to mark the unused cables and the cables that will be obsolete after Linac4 connection.

Exchange of Main DumpA. Perillo Marcone, A. Sarrio Martinez

The existing Booster dump was installed during construction of the Booster (1968-1972); it is inappropriate for Linac4 intensities and 2 GeVHaving a new dump in place is a prerequisite for Linac4 connection- procedure to dismantle existing dump (ALARA)- installation of new dump including CV equipment towards the end of 2013

new dump: temperature new dump: stress

Beam InstrumentationJ. Tan et al

Position- injection (LT, LTB and BI): new system based on Linac4 standards; new monitors (shorted strip lines), new cables (old ones removed), new acquisition chain- Booster orbit:new cables for the new PSB orbit and trajectory system will not be pulled but this system will be installed and commissioned via existing OASIS channels with slightly reduced performance (s/n) for a selectable ring; old system remains as is- extraction and transfer:replacement of 10 remaining BPMs in BT, BTP, BTM and BTY (inductive PUs)some upgrade of the already installed inductive PUs

Intensity- injection (BI.BCT10 and 20 (x4)): reduction of windings around the cores, for operation with very short Linac4 pulses- PSB DCCTs: consolidation (new electronics tested in LEIR)- extraction and BTY lines: change of BCTs including cables

Profile- SEM:SEM grids in the extraction and transfer lines to be equipped with new electronics and sw- BWS:general maintenance, calibration, some improvements (PMs, filters)- BT.MTV10:new tank (was before in BT.SMV10)

Beam Lossfirst phase: installation of 32 LHC-type detectors parallel installation to the operational system, two detectors in each of the 16 PSB sections (L2)

Misc.tune control improvementsome work related to dump exchange

PowerS. Pittet

• exchange of Multipole Power converters is the outstanding activity• possibly install 4 new converters for BI1.SMV, BI2.SMV, BI4.SMV (+ 1 spare)

• Phase 1 : Decabling campaign of the surface PSB Multipole converters completed• Phase 2 : Decabling campaign of the machine PSB Multipole converters started • Ancient multipole racks and power converters have been removed• New multipole rack supports are currently under construction

MagnetsA. Newborough

Upgrades to the main bending and quadrupole magnets are planned from September, upgrades will be made mainly to hydraulic circuits including reinforcing the quadrupole hydraulic connections and modifying the magnet interlocks.

Quadrupole connections before and after the upgrade

RF

LL RF M.E. Angoletta• new Digital Beam Control installed in parallel with the existing beam control on all

rings (plus a spare system) during LS1, which will be commissioned during the start-up after LS

• RF Interlock system HW produced & tested in LS1, and will be installed ready for commissioning in September 2014

TFB (A. Blas)• new Transverse Feedback system installed in parallel with existing TFB for all

rings during LS1, commissioning and testing of the new system will take place until December 2014

HL RF M. Paoluzzi• During LS1, 5 additional FINEMET cells are to be installed in R4 to bring the total

to 10, all of which to be equipped with new power amplifiers. These will be commissioned and tested until December 2014

Beam TransferJ. Borburgh

Upgrade planned on BE.SMH: modification of under vacuum electrical connections and cooling to allow 2 GeV operation.

Exchange planned for November 2013

Whatever can be done during LS1, is one task less during LS2, when many other septa need to be replaced!

Beam InterlocksC. Martin, B. Puccio (TE/MPE)

• new ‘PSB Ejection’ Master BIC will be operational after LS1• managing the four possible beam destinations:

BDUMP, PS, ISOGPS or ISOHRS• four input signals are reserved for these destinations

(information available in the PSB telegram)• interlock conditions analyzed via a truth table that relates the

acquisition values of main bending magnets with certain destinations

• extraction kickers are disabled when the ‘PSB Ejection’ Beam_Permit is FALSE

Magnet InterlocksP. Dahlen, R. Mompo (TE/MPE)

• Warm magnet Interlock Controller (WIC) solution will be operational after LS1

• Standardized interlock system based on PLC (Siemens Safety Series):• already operational in LHC, SPS-LHC transfer-lines, LEIR & Linac3, and soon to

be installed in Linac4.

• PLC Programming & PVSS supervision in collaboration with EN/ICE-PLC.

• 4 controllers to protect & control 173 magnets and 177 Power-Converters.

• + 43 deported crates to collect the magnets inputs (Thermo-switches, water-flow switches,…)

• + 10 crates to provide Permit to Power-converters and collect their status and give Permit to Beam Interlock System

Page 16: LIU-PSB Activities during LS1

Not to be forgotten…

• complete re-alignment of the machine and some of the transfer lines• renovation of the beam stopper control (EIS)• new access system• there is a lot of additional activity ongoing which is pure maintenance,

consolidation, or not under the umbrella of LIU (e.g. new access system)• there is a lot of integration, preparation and design work ongoing e.g. for

Linac4 connection (not LS1…)
