WEEKDAY MASSES: Fr Stephen will be chaplain to a school retreat for part of this week. Alternative weekday Mass locations are offered above. Please contact Fr Chambers on 01563 533587 if you need a priest urgently.

WORSHIP BEYOND LEVEL ZERO: From 9th August: If you have symptoms of COVID-19 do not attend Mass

and seek a test. Sanitise your hands on entering and leaving the church. Please check in using the NHS Check In app. Otherwise

a steward will take the name of one person from your household.

There is no fixed physical distancing required in church. Please leave a reasonable space between households.

Face coverings must be worn unless you have an exemption. Children under 12 years are exempt.

There is no need to book a place at Mass – just come along.

There will be no holy water in the stoups just now. No handshakes should be exchanged outside of your

household at the sign of peace just now. Please continue the “wave of peace”.

Communion should be taken in the hand. There is no one way system and the communion

procession will be as before March 2020. Votive candles may be lit. Do not light candles unless

your hands are dry after sanitising, and do not put hand sanitiser near candles since it is flammable.

The doors will remain open for ventilation.

Some physically distanced seating: The left side aisle has been arranged to maintain greater physical distance to encourage those who are reluctant to mix in large groups for health reasons to return to Mass with greater peace of mind. These seats cannot be reserved, and we recommend you arrive early if you would like to make use of the physically distanced seating.

NHS CHECK IN APP: When you attend Mass, the default way to collect names and contact information is now through the NHS Test and Protect “Check In Scotland” app on a mobile phone. You are asked to scan the QR code displayed in the porch when you enter the church.

How to use NHS Test and Protect “Check In Scotland”

Install the App – you only need to do this once:

1. Visit the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store on your smartphone.

2. Click “Install” to download the “Check In Scotland” App. This is not the same as the “Protect-Scot” app which you may already have on your phone.

3. Fill out your contact details (you only need to do this the first time you use the app).

Checking-in to a venue (including our church) – you do this every time you visit:

1. Open the App. 2. Click on “Scan QR Code”. 3. Point your phone’s camera at the QR code on the

poster in the porch (looks like a square bar-code).

That’s it! To check out when you leave, press “Check out” or the system will log you off automatically at the end of the day.

If you have a phone with a camera, you can use Check In Scotland. If you cannot set this up yourself, please ask someone who knows how to help you.

Using the App means the NHS can instantly tell you if you’ve been in a place which means you need a Test or to isolate, and saves Contact Tracers trying to individually reach everyone – which is expensive and takes longer, so is less efficient at stopping the virus spreading. It also means our stewards don’t need to manually record your presence every time you come to Church.

MARY McKELLAR, RIP: The funeral Mass for the late Mary McKellar will take place on Tuesday 31st August at 10 am. May she rest in peace.

THANK YOU: Mae McLinn would like to thank the parishioners who have supported her and her late husband Stephen during his recent illness. Thank you for the cards, messages, telephone calls, visits – they were appreciated by Stephen and by Mae. Stephen’s family is grateful for the efforts of so many who were involved in the beautiful funeral Mass and who prepared and served the tea afterwards in the hall. Thank you to everyone and a Mass will be offered for your own intentions.

SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION: Bishop Nolan will confirm the children who made their First Holy Communion this year on Thursday 23rd September at 7 pm in St Joseph’s.

SUNDAY TEAS: Teas and coffees after Sunday Mass are now able to resume. We need volunteers (eight groups of two) to serve the teas and wash up on a Sunday. If you would like to volunteer please let Margaret McGrath or Fr Stephen know. When we have volunteers in place the teas will resume.

CHILDREN’S LITURGY: We need volunteers to lead the children’s liturgy. This involves preparing a message about the Sunday Gospel to share with the children. Resources are available. We will resume children’s liturgy when we have volunteers in place. Please let Fr Stephen know if you can help.

SUNDAY NEWSLETTER: Since March 2020, the Sunday newsletter has been posted to those who have been unable to

attend Mass in person or are unable to access the newsletter on the parish website. We are pleased to continue this service, but would be grateful if more people could access the newsletter through the website. The newsletter will be posted to the people presently on the mailing list until the weekend of 21st/22nd August. If you would like to receive a newsletter by post after this date, please phone the parish house on 01563 521832.

PILGRIMAGE TO ST NINIAN’S CAVE, WHITHORN: Happily, the Whithorn Pilgrimage will go ahead this year with Mass on the beach on Sunday 29th August at 4.00 pm. There will not be Mass in the church in Whithorn this year. No bus will run this year and people are asked to make their own way.

NATIONAL PILGRIMAGE TO CARFIN: The annual Pilgrimage to the National Shrine of Our Lady in Carfin will take place this year on 5th September with Mass beginning at 3.00 pm. The Principal Celebrant and Homilist will be Bishop Brian McGee. In this Year of St Joseph, the Pilgrimage will be in honour of St Joseph.

APPEAL FOR FOOD PARCELS: We appeal again for food parcels to be delivered to the church as stock is low. The contents of the food parcel are specific and are to be delivered in a strong plastic or paper bag:

2 cans of soup 1 canned meal, e.g. beef bolognese, chilli con carne,

chicken supreme, Fray Bentos style pie 1 pack of either pasta, tinned potatoes, rice 1 tin of fruit 1 tin of vegetables 1 tin of beans 1 carton of long-life milk (UHT) 1 tin of hotdog sausages 1 tin of sardines/mackerel fillets/tuna 1 packet of biscuits 1 toilet roll 1 bar of soap.

Please ensure canned foods have a ring pull for opening. Please also note that tea, coffee and sugar are not required.

Please deliver the parcels to the church hall on Wednesday between 11 am and 12 noon. If you really cannot deliver parcels at this time, they can be brought to Mass or left in the front porch of the church house. Thank you for your support.

SPONSOR A PIPE FUNDRAISING APPEAL: As part of our Organ Restoration Project, we are offering you the chance to sponsor an organ pipe. Your individual donation will help towards the cost of the restoration. We will recognise your generosity with a commemorative certificate and, with your permission, your name will be recorded in our public Book of Sponsors. Sponsor a Pipe forms are available in the porch. You can also sponsor a pipe in memory of a loved one or as a birthday, Christmas, wedding, wedding anniversary, First Communion or Confirmation gift to someone.

As we embark on a major restoration project of the pipe organ, which is itself a generous legacy from the past, please consider any small way you can help to make the instrument a precious gift for the future.
