All Saints Mass Schedule:

Thursday October 31st: NO 8:20 a.m. morning Mass. We will have a Vigil Mass at 6:30 p.m.

Friday November 1st: We will have a 8:20 a.m. morning Mass for the Holy Day and 6:30 p.m. No confessions after Morning

Mass.

For the past few weeks I have been pondering all the "work" that goes into Masses here at St. John. We have so many

volunteers who make things run relatively smoothly. This week I was struck by how dedicated our Mass Captains and

Sacristans are, and how much we really count on them. Their care for our church and organizing our Liturgies is nearly heroic

in their dedication.

Reflection:

What is my incentive for doing good? We all seek happiness. Fr. Robert Spitzer

identifies the first level of happiness as immediate gratification, an obligation to self

alone, and the second level as short-term gratification from personal achievement

and promotion of self. We can see this in the Pharisee of today’s Gospel.

So, shouldn’t doing what our faith asks us to do make us happy?

If I see myself as God sees me, I have immense gratitude that he loves me still,

because, even if I fast and tithe, I know I still fall short of the mark in many ways.

Yet, He loves me. When you feel this level of gratitude, as with the tax collector, you

are not likely to look down on the rest of humanity. The tax collector’s humility

does not prevent him from doing good, but points to Who is the Ultimate Good,

whose truth, love, justice and beauty is eternal, and the One we ultimately should

want to please. On the way home . . .

In what ways are we required to fast? (Think beyond Lent.)

Scripture Alive . . .

God already knows what we have done and what we have not done. Like a good

parent he always wants us to live up to what we are created for.

In Chapter one of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, CCC 27 states: The desire

for God is written in the human heart, because man is created by God and for God;

and God never ceases to draw man to himself. Only in God will he find the truth and

happiness he never stops searching for.

Open your Catechism this week and read together the Prologue, number I: To Know

God and Love God, and in your Bible, Genesis chapter 1, verses 26-28. To know the

depth of the love of God serves as a rock and shield in the trials of life.

Luke 18:9-14

Jesus addressed this parable to those

who were convinced of their own

righteousness and despised

everyone else.

"Two people went up to the temple

area to pray; one was a Pharisee and

the other was a tax collector.

The Pharisee took up his position

and spoke this prayer to himself,

'O God, I thank you that I am not

like the rest of humanity -- greedy,

dishonest, adulterous -- or even like

this tax collector.

I fast twice a week, and I pay tithes

on my whole income.'

But the tax collector stood off at a

distance and would not even raise

his eyes to heaven but beat his

breast and prayed,

'O God, be merciful to me a sinner.'

I tell you, the latter went home

justified, not the former; for

whoever exalts himself will be

humbled, and the one who humbles

himself will be exalted."

We have been beyond blessed to experience an incredible increase in the numbers of our Youth Choir over the past few weeks! Children from our community, have been joining together in rehearsals, learning new music, and singing old favorites. The Youth Choir helps to elevate the music at some of the Masses in our Parish, the children from the school singing at the All School Masses, and the entire choir singing for the 11:30am Mass on the first Sunday of the month, and the 5pm Saturday Mass the third Sunday of the month. Sound like fun? The youth think so! If you know anyone who loves singing and might be interested in joining the Youth Choir, don’t hesitate to reach out! There’s still time to join, or even just give it a try! Of course this would not at all be possible without the support of the parish, so thank you all for your prayers, time, and treasures!

When we enter a church we are entering a Story, the

Story of Salvation.

In RCIA, we are learning that we are a part of this

wonderful Story of Salvation.

Let's start from the beginning.

Chapter 1. Creation: God made us, because He loves

us and He wants to share His goodness with us.

Chapter 2. The Fall: Sin entered into the world when

Adam & Eve turned their backs on God, caving into

temptations from the devil.

Chapter 3. She made me do it. Sin causes tension in

our relationship with God and each other.

Chapter 4. Key Players. God chose Key Players,

Noah, Abraham, Moses Israel and King David, to start

the repair that sin has brought down on the world.

Chapter 5. Jesus. God sent His Son, Jesus in our

behalf to repay the debt to God and to re-open

heaven. Jesus is our Redeemer.

Chapter 6. You. God calls each of us to

conversion. We all have a part to play in this Story of

Salvation.

What is in the next chapter? That is up to you. We all

have a part to play. God has made us to depend on each

other. By living out our roles , and giving service to

others, we give, “glory to God" and dignity to our lives.

Remember when we cave in (and we all do) we are no

longer serving God and His Goodness, we are serving the

evil one.

A Spotlight on Liturgy

This semester, all of our youth programs, and our parish

as a whole, have taken on the mission of renewing our

understanding and love of the source and summit of our

faith, the Eucharist. Our foundational conversations

have been directed toward Liturgy, so I thought I would

share some of these insights with you here.

Often we hear the word “Liturgy” and immediately

think of Mass. While the mass is a form of Liturgy, it is

not the only one. The Catechism of the Catholic Church

tells us that, within the Christian context, Liturgy is

“the participation of the People of God in ‘the work

of God.’ Through the Liturgy, Christ, our redeemer

and high priest, continues the work of our

redemption in, with, and through his Church” (CCC

1069).

In this context, the Catechism continues to explain,

Liturgy not only includes Mass but also the

proclamation of the Gospel and activity charity. This

can include celebration of any of the seven sacraments,

praying the Liturgy of the Hours. The Catechism also

speaks of liturgy as “a participation in Christ’s own

prayer addressed to the Father and the Holy Spirit,” and

the source and goal of Christian prayer (CCC 1073).

All of this is to punctuate the importance of liturgy and

prayer as opportunities to unite ourselves with Christ

and draw closer to who we were made to be. It is

through whole hearted participation in prayer and

liturgy that we come to know the heart of our Triune

God and develop a deeper understanding of our own

identity in light of the Lord and his love for us. It is

through liturgy that we are healed, transformed, filled,

fortified, and given everything that we need in order to

live out the best most authentic version of ourselves.

In this season, let us pray for renewed understanding

and strength in our participation in liturgy, that we may

wholeheartedly give ourselves over to Christ, come to

know his face, and be immersed in his love and mercy.

That heading is a little bit of a bait-and-switch, howev-

er our substitutes ARE responsible for sharing the

sweetness of the Lord! (Plus, I couldn’t find any other

attractive clip art.)

The point is: we could use some substitutes for our

Sunday Preschool - Grade Five Religious Education

Classes. (10 a.m. -11:15 a.m.)

If you have ever considered becoming a catechist, but

didn’t feel like you could make the weekly commit-

ment, this is for you.

son plans, with lots of fun activities (even a “script” to

follow)….and we have all the materials and supplies

ready to go. You show up; enjoy 12 or fewer kiddos

for an hour, and we fall on our knees in gratitude.

Recently, at a pro-life dinner, a re red

veterinarian described the abhorrence

he and fellow students experienced as they

were taught the dismemberment procedure

necessary to remove a dead calf from it’s

mother’s womb. A procedure that sickened medical students when

performed on a dead calf is rou nely used on live human babies.

We would like to turn away from such ugliness, but we must

con nue to stand up for what is right. Your signature is not too

much to ask for, is it?

If you did not sign the pe on when we had it available in July/

August, please make sure to do this! Pe ons are available for

any Michigan county in the parish office throughout the week. You

must be a registered voter, and you may only sign once. The drive

con nues through November.

More than 200,000 signatures to end dismemberment abor ons

have been received at the Right to Life of Michigan office.

Last week marked the halfway point of the Michigan Values Life

pe on drive, and the signatures received represent half of the

400,000 goal. 340,047 valid signatures are necessary to ini ate

legisla on to ban the late-term dismemberment abor on

procedure.

Pe ons for any county in Michigan are in the parish office.

You must be a registered voter and may only vote once.

THANKSGIVING BASKETS

St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry will again be helping those in

need with the distribu on of Thanksgiving baskets on

Saturday, November 23, between 10:00 a.m. And 1:00 p.m.,

in the Knight’s Hall. If you or anyone you know is in need of a

Thanksgiving basket, please call 750-0469 and leave a message

with your name and phone number. A

volunteer will return your call to obtain

further informa on.

The Pantry is constantly in need of dona ons. We are able to operate only because of

your support, so we thank you for always being so generous.

The Pantry is open every third Saturday of the month between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. to receive dona ons.

If that is not convenient for you, dona ons may also be delivered during the week to the church’s main office. A

volunteer will collect the dona ons and take them to the pantry.

$594.53 check from Julie DeGayner, the

manager of the Holly Goodwill Store, to help

support the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry.

The check is the result from the Holly

Goodwill’s "Round Up" program that donates

to charitable organizations six times a year.

Staff will directly supervise students in grades preschool through eighth grade who are enrolled in the St. John School aftercare program. Staff will work in partnership with the Jets Club Director to monitor students in a safe and nurturing environment.

Mission Statement: As disciples of Jesus Christ at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Parish, we are called to work for the salvation of all, sharing the Good News of God’s love, mercy, and forgiveness, while serving one another.

The parish has been busy

getting the campus ready for

colder weather. The sprinklers

have been winterized, and

maintenance is being done on

our rooftop units at the school

and activity center. Some of the

items getting done are the

filters in those units and also

any repairs that need to be

done.

You may have noticed that the church is getting warmer

too. We turned on the boiler for the season, and there were

some repairs that needed to be done when the switch-over

happened. We are also winterizing the chapel at this time.

We will have the pipes winterized and the heat adjusted to

insure that the chapel stays in good shape during the

coming winter months. We are also looking at having

spray foam insulation in there to help keep little

critters out that are looking for a warm place to live during

the winter.

October is the month of the Rosary and Respect Life

Month. You are invited to join your fellow parishioners

praying the Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary one half hour

before the 5:00 p.m., 8:30 a.m., and 10:00 a.m. weekend

masses. Our intention will be for government recognition

of the sanctity of life from conception until natural

death. We will also be praying for the success of the

Dismemberment Ban Petition.

the Domestic Church . . . . CCW- Council of Catholic Women News... Two things I remember about October being special

follow: The first would be Respect Life. Not only is this

important to consider for the unborn but in all aspects of

our lives. How do we show respect to one another, the

young, the elderly, classmates, family, friends and

neighbors? Many people feel they only need to respect

their own life. Second, growing up in a strong Catholic

community in Detroit, I remember in the 60's a deep

respect and devotion to the Blessed Mother. Nightly we

could pray the rosary as it came over the radio. School had

nightly rosary at 7:00 p.m. at the church during October, so

we had the opportunity to pray together. We all made time

to pray the rosary for peace. It is great that we pray the

rosary together before Mass. Mary and Jesus hear our

prayers.

Once again I extend an invitation to all ladies of the

parish: Our Council of Catholic Women invite you to join

us for our fall gatherings. October is our membership

month. In your envelope packet for the week of Oct. 6

there was a special envelope for CCW dues of $12.00,

payable in October and November. Think about joining us.

November 13: Pre-Advent/Christmas Breakfast Gathering,

at 10:00 a.m. Hill Street Grill .

December: NO Meeting-consider Advent by Candlelight

Please remember to thank God for your faith and the

freedom to practice it. Pray for our parish and our priests.

Ask God to rekindle faith in those Catholics who have

fallen away from the Church. Pray for our country's

leaders and the choices they have to make for us all. Don't

forget those who put their lives on the line for peace and

safety in our nation and the world. Many are making big

sacrifices for world peace.

The new Pictorial Directory is great! Our St. John Parish

family helps our domestic church. Having a network of

believers to care for, share with, learn from, and pray

with reflects our loving God who knows we need one

another. A community of faith is what we celebrate on

the two upcoming feast days, All Saints’ Day and All

Souls’ Day. The saints in Heaven, the souls in Purgatory,

our fellow parishioners and all Catholics around the

world make up our community of believers. I love the

quote, “Saints are sinners who keep on trying.” We are all

saints!

A great family activity that incorporates this communion

into our lives is to pray for one another. Using our new

pictorial directory, start with the first photo and pray for

the family of the person/s pictured there, and for all

members of their family both living and deceased. You

could even call upon the intercession of their patron

saints. Make sure the photo is seen by everyone so there

is a face with the prayer being offered each day. This can

be done at dinnertime or first thing in the morning,

whenever your family is together. I do not know how

many photographs there are but it will take several

months to get through all of them. This is a huge way we

can help one another.

Do you listen to Catholic radio or watch Catholic

television? These are such good resources for living

family life as a domestic church, for learning our faith,

and joining in communion with the universal family of

God. There have been so many times when I have been

struggling with a concern and then on Catholic radio they

are addressing the exact topic of my concern. Another

great resource to take advantage of is the free offering to

our parish of Formed.org. As Catholics, we have a huge

and amazing family of believers to journey with to

Heaven.

We are made for community and not for isolation. Being

lone soldiers have caused a myriad of problems in our

society today. Healthcare professionals and mental health

workers are becoming more aware of our need for

community to have wellbeing of mind, body and spirit.

Let’s live in communion with all the saints!
