THE FAMILY FULLY ALIVE
Gospel Reading June 2, 2019
Luke 24:46-53
Jesus said to his disciples:
"Thus it is written that the Christ
would suffer and rise from the dead
on the third day and that repentance,
for the forgiveness of sins, would be
preached in his name to all the
nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
You are witnesses of these things.
And behold I am sending the
promise of my Father upon you; but
stay in the city until you are clothed
with power from on high."
Then he led them out as far as
Bethany, raised his hands, and
blessed them. As he blessed them he
parted from them and was taken up
to heaven.
They did him homage and then
returned to Jerusalem with great
joy, and they were continually in the
temple praising God.
The normal evening Mass and Confessions this Wednesday are canceled. We will be holding our eighth grade gradua-
tion Mass at 7 PM.
I had a great time with my classmates as we celebrated our 20th anniversary at the K of C State Convention. My anni-
versary is not until June 12, though it was our Detroit classmates actual anniversary during the convocation. As always
the Knights treated us very well. Some have asked me about a celebration for my twentieth anniversary of ordination,
usually we don't have a party until our twenty fifth anniversary. I think I can make it five more years.
Make sure you pick up your Applefest Raffle Tickets in the Gathering Space after Mass. I understand there will be more
opportunities coming up, but there are four chances for Early Bird drawings to win cash, so you may want to turn your
money and ticket stubs in early.
Reflecting on the Word Surely, the disciples watched with conflicted hearts as Jesus was taken up into heaven. It must have been hard to see Jesus leave, and yet the Gospel states that the disciples returned to Jerusalem “with great joy.” Today’s reading from Acts tells of an angel urging the disciples to move on as they watched as Jesus left them. That angel helped them see that they needed to be about the mission that Jesus left to them. An entire world needed to hear about the Good News of Christ’s life, death, and Resurrection. -Celebrating Sunday for Catholic Families 2018-2019 On the way home… What is the promise of the Father? Hint: Think Trinity. Living the Word… Praise God! “They were continually in the temple praising God,” Luke tells us. Write your own Psalm of praise to God, or create one as a family. Decorate it as a tent card and place in the center of the table, taking turns reciting it at mealtimes. (A Psalm is a sacred song or hymn. In the book of Psalms are wonderful psalms of lament, thanksgiving and praise. You could use one such as Psalm 8 or Psalm 34:2, as an example when writing your own.

A Bit Presumptuous
NO CREDIT CARDS FOR GRACE
How easy the trap when we are faced with temptation to think to ourselves, “Oh, it’s just a little sin, I’ll just go to confession later.” This, however, is a sin in itself, the sin of presumption.
Why is it called this? Because when we fall into this temptation, rather than turning to God’s grace to resist the first sin, we presume that we will have the chance to get to confession, and that we will be forgiven that sin.
And why is there the chance the first sin will not be forgiven? The forgiveness of sin requires a true contrition of heart, but when we commit the sin of presumption, especially when we let ourselves slip into the habit of doing so frequently, we show that we aren’t truly sorry for the sin and harden our hearts.
I urge you, then, when you find yourself slipping into this temptation, fling yourself on God’s grace that He has given you for the present, rather than trying to rely on non-existent credit.

Director of Formation, Deacon Dan Medich Jr. . . . .
I am sharing with you today, an article from
Symbolon ( Augustine Institute), I hope you enjoy it.
The saints had disciplines. An easy way for us to try
and follow the saints examples is for us to call these
disciplines ‘habits.’ Lets take a look at the:
HABITS OF THE SAINTS.
H- Holy hour: Start with 10 minutes of daily prayer
and watch it grow.
A- Accountability: Be transparent with at least one
friend who will hold you accountable to being a
disciple. (husbands, wives, good opportunity here)
B- Bible prayer and study. Let God's Word
transform your mind and connect you to Jesus in
prayer.
I- Invest in our parish. Tithe and serve in the
mission of the parish.
T- Tell: Boldly tell others about your faith and invite
them to faith in Jesus.
S- Sacraments: Participate as frequently as you can.
What do you think? A good check list? We could
start checking each other?
You can start with me. The next time you see me at
church or shopping, go ahead ask me , Sandy how are
your spiritual habits coming along? We could
actually be helping each other by reminding all of us
of the HABITS of the Saints.
Peace & Joy,
Sandy

Communion - A few MORE
Points of Catholic Etiquette
1. Be on time - even early! At
St. Johns we pray the rosary
before Mass; aim to get in on at
least some of that! Being early allows you to
compose yourself before the worship begins.
2. Don’t leave early. It is not appropriate to leave
before the recessional is over, or at least before
those in the closing procession have left the
church. But - don’t judge others for leaving early.
A priest I know noticed a certain woman always
sneaking out of Mass directly after Communion.
His attitude about that changed when he found out
that she had a critically ill relative at home, and
while she paid for a caregiver so she could go to
Mass, it was essential that she be home at a certain
time. We can never know why someone must
leave early (or arrive late).
3. Pray after Mass. It is a long-held custom to take
a minute or two following Mass to pray before
leaving. This is another [better] way of avoiding
traffic, certainly, and a good habit that can help us
take the grace of the Mass with us as we leave. If
we choose NOT to take those moments to pray, we
need to leave church silently and save visiting for
the Gathering Space, to respect those who do.
4. Respect others’ physical boundaries…..Some of
us like to hold hands during the Lord’s Prayer; oth-
ers find it distracting. Some enjoy a handshake or
hug as a sign of peace, others prefer a peace sign or
a smile and bow. Try to be aware of what those
around you prefer. They may simply be trying not
to share their germs with you.
5. Don’t read the bulletin during Mass. We have a
great bulletin, but take it “to go”. (And remember
to take it with you when you leave the pew!)
I would like to invite you and your family to share in
our community through one of the various opportunities
for youth and young adults. Below is a list of programs
available for middle school, high school, and young adults
age 18-35 to come together and share in fun, fellowship,

Top 10 Abortion Myths: #10: Late-term abortions are only for health problems www.RTL.org
“They [Abor on advocates] have been claiming that late-term abor ons are rare, that they are only done for desperate reasons like imminent fetal demise, that the bills do not legalize abor on up un l the moment of birth, that a live birth in the course of an abor on never happens, and that in any event that would not cons tute infan cide. All of these claims are false.” Get the truth. h ps://archny.org/news/the-truth-about-late-term-abor ons
We believe that there is always forgiveness for those who have chosen abortion and we know that God loves them as He does all His children and hope they find the healing they will come to need. There are wonderful options for those who carry a child, but do not feel they can parent a child. With medical advances, there are few cases where the choice must be made of one life over another. -National Council of Catholic Women
So much of the abortion debate is based on myths, bad
What would you want me to do?
A man came into Outreach. I recognized him immediately. He was in trouble he told me, Financial Trouble! I asked him for
the details, and he began to tell me about his problems. As I spoke to him, I realized this man has more problems than he is
aware of. He is suffering from dementia. This was going to be a challenge; if I ignore his situation, he will only continue to
slide down the shaft of awareness and lose what little he has left. I have seen this man in our Pews for decades, he is a long-
time parishioner. Can I ignore him? Should I help?
We spoke of his income, where he worked, and how much he made. As I compared it to what he owed I knew he was in
serious trouble, the biggest problem being his memory. He placed his bills in specific places and somehow someone moved
them. There were also times he mailed his checks, only to find that the bill went unpaid. He took out loans to catch up!
This elderly gentleman has worked his whole life and has precious little to show for it. He is on Social Security but receives
very little. I have a resource here at the Parish that I thought could help. That resource is named Carol Jankowski. Carol is a
lifelong Parishioner like many of us here at St. John. Carol, who works with MMAP or Medicare and Medicaid, can be
reached at my office on Mondays. Carol is my ACE card, often helping people in similar situations.
Carol went to work and was able to help maximize this man’s Social Security and get him on the proper insurances. Through
her efforts we encountered his niece. When asked if she would be willing to help this man, she replied yes, she loves him.
That was music to our ears! With his family involved now we have a support network. After discussing his situation, his niece
took him out of his house, where he lived alone. He now lives with her and her family. He has his loving niece to help keep
his bills in order, and appointments straight. If he is anything like me, he needs someone to keep track of his car keys also. At
some point he may get an apartment that he can afford, but now he has his niece and her family.
I have been criticized by some for helping this gentleman. I cannot tell you more than these few generalizations. In all, I spent
relatively little to achieve this result, a little more than $500.00. I say it was money well spent. Let me know your thoughts at
[email protected] or 810-373-0690
Thank you, Carol Jankowski, for being there for our Saint John family!!
You can reach Carol at 810-373-0690, just ask for the ACE!!

An Education in Faith
What is STEAM? I get asked that question a lot.
STEAM is an educational approach to learning that uses science, technology, engineering, the arts and,
mathematics as access points for guiding student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking. The end results are
students who take thoughtful risks, engage in experiential learning, persist in problem-solving, embrace
collaboration, and work through the creative process. Here at St. John Catholic School classroom teachers work
collaboratively with the STEAM teacher to ensure students are working on topics in STEAM that are relevant to
their classroom instruction. These students are the innovators, educators, leaders, and learners of the 21st century!
This year in STEAM we have completed a lot of fun and engaging projects. Our 7th and 8th grade students
have been working on bridges; their bridges will need to be able to hold canned foods. The 6th grade students
designed and built toys. The 5th grade students enjoyed kitchen chemistry while creating butter in a jar. 4th grade
student recently completed a unit on plants; with this unit, we were blessed to be able to use the greenhouse we have
at the school. 3rd grade students recently worked on magnetism. The 2nd grade students enjoyed learning about non
-newton substances. 1st grade students recently learned about metamorphosis and watched their own caterpillars go
through the process of metamorphosis. Kindergarten students learned that ladybugs go through metamorphosis
while watching their own ladybugs complete this process. Kindergarten has also been learning about composting
with their very own composting bin. As you can tell we have been very busy with a lot of fun hands-on-learning
activities in the STEAM classroom.
This is my first year at St. John. I feel very blessed to be able to teach in a faith-filled environment. The
students and community as a whole have been very welcoming.

Our sound system is finished being installed and all of the
necessary employees have been trained on how to use it.
We took into account some feedback that we received in
the past in regards to the sound system and hope that
everyone can hear the mass better. We are able to control
the sound for daily mass, weekend mass and holy day
masses. This is unique because the sound is different when
the church is packed and when only half the church is
packed. With where the speakers are located it also helps
to distribute the sound throughout the church. The sound
system is also available for Fr.'s to control from an iPad at
their seats. This could be helpful when we have speakers
that are hard to hear. If you have any other questions
please let me know and any feedback would be
appreciated!

Offertory Observation...
Jesus ascended into heaven, blessing His disciples and
promising that they would soon receive the power of the
Holy Spirit. We who have received that promised gift of
the Spirit are now empowered to be His witnesses to the
ends of the earth-to use our time and talents to spread the
good news of salvation.
Vocation Views…
Jesus promised his disciples that they would be clothed in
power from God. As a follower of Jesus, you are also
given that same promise. Pray for the grace to be a
faithful witness.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The paschal candle, blessed at the Easter Vigil, carried in procession into the darkened church, and aflame with the light of Christ to be passed hand to hand to renew our bap-tism, burns for the fifty days of Easter whenever we gather as Christ’s risen body. In the last fifty years, we have grown to see this candle as the sign of Christ’s enduring presence with us. Before then, it was often seen more as a kind of signpost pointing backwards to events in Christ’s life. Therefore, in some places, on the fortieth day after Easter, in order to portray the disappearance of Jesus at the Ascension, the candle was hidden.

Have you ever been told that, “life is not all about you!”? I have, and I have said it to my children. But it is hard to think that our life is not all about us and our happiness. We believe that God loves us and wants us to be happy, thus we pray to Him with our list of wants and desires, and those of our family and friends. These “needs” can fill us with a spirit of anxiety. It was a pleasant surprise when I asked God one day what it is that He wants and desires, and I found my heart was filled with a spirit of peace and joy.
There is a lot of pressure, stress, and disappointment when we strive to please ourselves and everyone else. But when we acknowledge that this is God’s world and we are here because of Him, and we desire to please Him, there’s a lot less stress. We might think that since God doesn’t need anything, there’s nothing we can do for Him. But it is precisely because He doesn’t need anything that He is pleased with everything we do for love of Him.
We know that having a loving family pleases Our Father in Heaven because He sent His son into one. We know that sacrificing for others pleases Our Father in Heaven because He sent His son to sacrifice for us. Every day we have lots of choices to make. If we want to fulfil God’s desires and please Him, let’s choose in favor of what will promote more love within our family and not self-concern. Next Sunday we celebrate the feast of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit came upon the Apostles. Let’s pray for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon our families and for our domestic church to be filled with love, as this will please God. The amazing thing is that whenever we center our life on God and with thoughts of pleasing Him, we find the love and joy that we all want and desire. God is amazing!
Be thankful to Him, as gratitude is pleasing to Our Father in Heaven! Come Holy Spirit, come!
