Good Day to you and welcome to the Little Turtle Basket training series course. This is Course 1 Basket Terminology. My name is Sherry Hendershot and we will be discussin basket nomenclature and the different types of materials that can be used to make a basket

Developer: Show picture of person sitting at a table with many different types of baskets behind her, on the table, etc.

Narrator: Good Day to you and welcome to the Little Turtle Basket training series course. This is Course 1 Basket Terminology. My name is Sherry Hendershot and we will be discussing basket nomenclature and the different types of materials that can be used to make a basket. 1Basket Terminology Narrator: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Introduction. Introduce myself. Ask the class if they have any experience making a basket.

Exercise. Describe a basket. Divide the class into groups. Set a basket at each group and have them write down as much as they can about it. Make sure each group has a tape measure. Have each group designate a group captain. This person will describe the basket based on the group descriptions. Write on a board basic keywords from the group.

I will then give my explanation based on:Basket type, dimensions, any design, the material used, the dye used, the type of handle.2

Base

Narrator: The basket shown here is rectangular in shape. This basket is comprised of the base, the sides - which can also be referred to as side walls, the rim, and handle. The handle is an optional piece based on the purpose and design of the basket. Developer: The narrator will show a rectangular basket and point to the base, side, rim, and handle as the words are spoken. Or an animation can be shown of a basket.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Developer: show a basket animation which allows the student to drag the correct naming conventions to the right spots.

4Splints

Reed SplintRaffia PalmRiver CaneIris LeavesCattailBarkRattanDifferent treesNarrator: The material used for this basket are called splints. Developer: The narrator would set the basket down and pick up some reed splints that are separate from the basket when discussing what the splints look like. Narrator: This basket has used reed splints. Reed splints are usually flat or flat with an oval curve on one side. Developer: have the narrator show the two types of splints (flat and flat oval)Narrator: Cane, river cane, wood splints, raffia, bamboo, grasses, rattan, cattail, bark, iris leaves, etc could also have been used. Reed and cane come from a vine called "calamus rotang. This vine is harvested in various parts of Asia. Reed is the inside of the vine, and cane is the outer bark. The vine is processed in factories into the different sizes of reed and cane. River cane grows along the banks of streams in the southern part of the United States. It is a member of the grass family and is similar to bamboo. Wood splints are from trees such as white or black ash, oak, maple, cherry, etc. Raffia is taken from the underside of the raffia palm leaf. The underside contains a membrane which is used to make the fibrous raffia.Developer: As the narrator discusses the tropical vinechange to a scene showing the harvesting of the tropical vine. As river cane is discussed show the cutting of the cane along a stream. For the wood splints maybe show some felled logs being split and made into splints.

5Spokes, Staves, or WarpWeft or weavers

Scene switches back to the narrator and the basket or show a basket weaver pushing up the warp and then starting to weave the weft.

Narrator: The basket base splints will be used to form the sides of the basket. As the splints are being pushed up vertically they are called the warp of the basket sides. In basket terms these are the spokes. When working with wood splints the warp is called staves. The term "staves" came from the coopering trade which is the making of barrels. Developer: have the narrator point to the warp splints. Narrator: The basket weaver weaves splints or other material into the warp in an over/under manner based on certain designs. The weft is the active element or weaver that intersects with the warp in a horizontal manner to create the basket sides.Developer: The narrator would point to the weavers

Ribs (weft)Weavers (warp)HandleRimGods EyeNarrator: Now we will look at a basket that is round in shape and does not have any particular base. The basket shown here is called a melon basket and contains ribs. The ribs are the basic structure or skeleton of the basket formed under the rim. This is the weft. The Gods Eye secures the rim to the handle and holds the ribs in place. The weavers go over and under the ribs to complete the basket. These are the warp. The melon basket falls under a basket grouping called rib baskets. Other baskets that fall in this category are hen baskets, buttocks baskets, peanut baskets, gizzard baskets, bow baskets, fanny baskets, and egg baskets. Rib baskets originated in Europe and were very common in Britain eventually making their way to the United States. Willow, rattan, and vines are used for ribs. Developer: Have the narrator pick up a melon basket and point to the different pieces.

The size of this basket is determined by the diameter of the rim.
