This Little Turkey

To Prep:

Cut along the dotted line of each page and arrange them in 1, 2, 3 order. Staple the pages together along the left hand side to make a book. Optional: Cut out the turkey in the bottom left corner of this sheet and glue it to the tip of a craft stick to make a pointer for your child to use as he reads.

To Read:

Help your child recite the words to the classic children’s rhyme, “This Little Piggy”: This little piggy went to the market. This little piggy stayed home. This little piggy had roast beef. This little piggy stayed home. This little piggy said, “Wee wee wee” all the way home.

Hand your child the book. Explain that this story uses almost the same words as the rhyme. The only difference is that it is not about a pig. Ask him to look at each of the pictures and tell you what animal he sees. When he is finished, close the book and use either the pointer (if you made one) or your finger to point to the words in the title. Read, “This Little Turkey”. Ask your child to repeat the words after you, pointing to each word just like you did. When your child turns to page 2, ask him to look at the picture again and make a guess about what the words will be about. Read out loud for him as he points to each word. Point out that the words matched the first line in the rhyme “This Little Piggy”. Ask your child to point to the words and read them too. On page 3, invite your child to look at the picture and then try reading the words on his own. Continue reading until your child has finished the book. Sign the back of his book to show that he read the story to you. Invite him to collect signatures from other people who listen to him read. He can read to stuffed animals, friends, neighbors, family members and teachers. The more he practices, the easier the book will become and the more he will see himself as a reader.

Directions: Cut out these cards and stick them to your word wall so that children can easily see the correct spelling when they are writing stories. Optional: Laminate the cards to make them more sturdy and/or make duplicate copies to keep in your writing center.
