British mechanic finds car’s problem an easy nut to crack British driver Clifford Bird had a nagging car problem that was driving him absolutely nuts, says the Norfolk Eastern Daily Press. Bird, who lives in the town of Diss, drives a silver MG he likes to keep in tip-top shape. After the car experienced problems with soggy acceleration, the 75-year old owner took the vehicle to a local garage, expecting to receive a bill of $818 for replacing the vehicle’s catalytic converter. Instead, the mechanic produced a bill for an hour’s work — and a gigantic sack of peanuts found inside the air cleaner. Mechanic John Grose removed about 2.5 kilograms of nuts from the filter, noting that mice proba-bly squirrelled them away, travelling through a narrow access pipe.

The garage’s final report: “Engine running as sweet as a nut.” (from the Province—January 11, 2008)

It was in good condition, and I was going to fit it in my MK X. I think it's '64 -'66 vintage. A Note from Al Moss

I regret to inform you that HCP (High Country Party), which was supposed to take place October 7-9 this year, has been can-celled, or, more properly, placed on backorder until, hopefully, next year.

If everything works out for 2009, I will inform you later this year.In the meantime, have a Great '8! (Please pass this on to any of our poor friends who don't have internet (e-male) access. Thanks)

I have no idea why, but I have been busily writing an autobiography. This great tome will be 175 pages, with over 100 photos, mostly in color. It will cover my car, motorcycle and horse-related activities, plus a history of Moss Motors. (Naturally, all inter-spersed with a bit of Al Moss humour). I hope to have the book finished and printed sometime next month (February). I will also have my new website up and running at the same time: http://www.racermoss.com (I think all you need is: racermoss.com) Please check it out later!

THIS SPACE FOR RENT (actually it’s free!!!)

If you want to inform club members of timely information, have it included in Little Classical Gas! Just submit your info to [email protected] before the deadline.

Canadian Classic MG Club Model & Paraphernalia night for

MARCH IS MODEL MONTH our 13th + fun filled year!!! The “Rules” for the event

Basic concept – There are trophies for 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place based on voting undertaken by the members present March 10th, 2008

Judging/voting will be by members/guests choice voting on the night of the event & ballots will be provided.

- All displays will be given a number on the night of the event and members present will be able to “vote” for their favorite display/layout of models & or parapher-nalia.

- This approach means that members do not need to have the biggest number of models all out parking lot style – or who has the most toys!. BUT, rather using a few or a bunch of models &/or paraphernalia in an effective display to win the hearts of the voters that night.

- Again this year there will be time & space for MODEL SWAP & SHOP – so bring your spares and be prepared to dicker-trade-buy & sell!

Interested??? We need participants and we need some help – if you are interested please fill out the bottom bit – tear along the dotted line & give to MIKE POWLEY any time before the February 11th 2008 meeting and the Model night meeting & display Monday March 10th, 2008 Need more information? John Clarke’s Paint Workshop

Date: Saturday, March 15 Time: 10:00am Where: John Clarke’s house—see address in roster.

Car Paint --- the good the bad and the ugly.

John will examine several examples of automobile paint jobs, and discuss what goes into a quality paint job, and what doesn't go into a bad paint job. He will show a few distinct exam-ples of what can go wrong with even an expensive, "professional" paint job, and give some pointers as to how you can save yourself thousands of dollars, by doing some of the work yourself. The workshop will take place rain or shine, so dress appropriately.

Spark Your Dream Those that attended last month’s membership meeting were lucky enough to have been introduced to Cande and Herman Zapp and their children. They had traveled from Argentina to Alaska - in a 1928 Graham-Paige—a 6 month trip that became 3 1/2 years. They are leaving the Vancouver area on Sunday, May 11th to head into the US and then start the next dream of theirs—travel throughout Asia in their car. We wish them luck. Follow their journey at : www.sparkyourdream.net

SPECIAL GUEST—July 14th Membership Meeting At our next meeting on July 14th we will be having a very special guest. Andy Smith is a friend of John Clarke's, and he has been involved in the movie industry for many years developing stunts for several of the James Bond, and Batman movies to mention a few. If you want to see Batman cars built from scratch, or the BMWs and Astons and Jaguars for the Bond series built to perform the stunts, Andy is the man who, along with his crew, built them. He also designed the boats that jump on the Bond movies. If you want to learn how to flip an 18 wheeler, tractor trailer unit end over end in down town Chicago, Andy will tell you how they did it. Andy will be bringing many of the pictures of the stunts filmed on location throughout the world, along with many video clips of stunts that have never been seen by the public before -- anywhere. He has just returned from Pa-nama and Italy where he has been demolishing Aston Martins and flipping boats for the latest Bond movie. You simply don't want to miss seeing what Andy and his crew have done. Bring a guest. They will thank you for it.

Presidents’ Run—September 27-28

This year's Club Presidents Norm Stanley and Madelaine Donatiello have picked Winthrop, Washington as the destination for the Presidents' Run. The event will start at 9:30 on Saturday morning at the Sumas border crossing and then head along Highway 20, the North Cascades Highway, to Winthrop.

A quaint western town with a colourful main street, Winthrop has lots of shops to nose around in. Run participants will be staying at the Winthrop Inn and can make their reservations by calling 800.444.1972 and indicating “Jaguar MG Club”. The prices excluding taxes are $85.00 single and $90.00 double, which includes breakfast coffee bar (muffins and hot beverages.) Reservations should be made before August 14 since the block of rooms will be released after that.

Sunday morning the run will cross back into Canada via Oroville Washington to Osoyoos and then re-turn to Vancouver via Highway 3, the Hope-Princeton. Some of the participants may be breaking up their return journey with a stopover and walk at Quintet Tunnels, an engineering marvel that was origi-nally part of the Kettle Valley Railway. For further information on the Presidents Run, please contact Norm Stanley or Madelaine Donatiello.

NEXT CLUB EVENT(S): Not much happening in October apparently...

UPCOMING ELECTIONS FOR EXECUTIVE

It’s that time of year again, when members have the opportunity to serve their Club by joining the Executive.

Over the past several years, we’ve had a mix of longer term members and new mem‐bers on our executive, which enables a great mix of continuity with fresh ideas.

This year we’ll be electing members to the important positions of Vice President – MG, and Vice President – Jaguar, for 2009.

Each of these positions requires a three year commitment, as these members will serve as Presidents in 2010 and Past Presidents in 2011.

If you would like to run, or want to nominate a fellow club member for these positions please contact our Nominations Coordinator at [email protected], prior to the November general meeting on November 10th.  Please also note that this meeting is also our AGM.

CHANGE IN DEADLINE FOR NOVEMBER ISSUE OF LITTLE CLASSICAL GAS

For the November issue only, the deadline for Little Classical Gas has been moved up to October 25th. There will be no exceptions. Please have all submissions in by that day so that they can be included in the November issue, which will be published and distributed by November 1.
