A LOOK AT BIKING JERSEYSIts easy to tell a seri-

ous cyclist rom a casualone. Someone riding orleisure or a little exercise isdrenched in sweat and try-ing in vain to ride smoothlyas the wind catches his orher -shirt.

Serious riders, however, are clothed in sleek, tightcycling jerseys that do morethan simply look good, saidormer Little 500 Race Direc-tor Pam Loebig.

Tat cotton -shirtwould get wet rom yoursweat and just sit on you,Loebig said. A cycling jer-sey will pull that sweat away

rom your skin, and then thatabric dries quickly. It willevaporate your sweat aster,

which is more comortable.Cycling jerseys also ft

more snugly, cutting downon wind resistance. Cyclingshorts can also provide more

comort to riders, as opposedto regular shorts with con-strictive elastic and slightlyuncomortable waistbands.

On race day, Little 500riders have used cycling jer-seys or about two decades, but in recent years, teamshave been using personal-ized practice jerseys a greatdeal.

Acacia rider Greg Bortzsaid a large amount othought goes into the designo these jerseys, whethertheyre or a Greek team oran independent team. Aca-cia tweaks its jerseys everytwo or three years but always

keeps the distinctive black-and-gold look, Bortz said.

I know with a raternity, your house colors, it s a bigdeal, Bortz said. Its def-nitely a cool pride thing be-cause our -shirts or peoplecoming to watch us are al-

    ways the same colors, too.

    Alex McCarthy

    Race-day jerseys more than just fabricIts 8 p.m. March 26, in a

    crowded Ballantine Hall class-

room, and Laura Bliss and herRideOn teammates are readyto choose their race-day jer-seys their identity or theLittle 500.

Tey qualifed 17th, so theyget the 17th pick o jerseys.Te solid-colored jerseys arelong gone, and the second-

year team with the black-and-blue shorts is running out ochoices or jerseys. When theopportunity to stand out inthe feld comes around, theypounced on it.

Our strategy this year wasmore to clash, more to makeus stand out more, Bliss said. Its baby blue and hot pink,so its going to look like a babyshower exploded or some-thing.

Sixty-six teams changetheir identities each year atthis chaotic meeting, and ev-erybody attends or elsethey are docked a two-secondpenalty. Te meeting has beenhappening or years, but thestory o Little 500 race-day jer-seys goes much urther back.

When the race began in the1950s more than three de-cades beore the womens race

was created the jerseys orparticipating raternities werehand-stitched by members osororities, known as Little Five

sweethearts. Te jersey cre-ation was the only role women

played in the race until thegenesis o the womens race 25

    years ago.In the 1990s, a local over-

supply o abric provided ahuge change in the way jerseys

were supplied on race day.wo local women who

owned a seamstress shop tookwhatever extra abric theycould fnd and threw it togeth-er to make race jerseys. For-mer Little 500 Race DirectorPam Loebig said the jerseys

would never cease to surpriseonce they arrived.

It could be any color com-bination, Loebig said. TeStudent Foundation wouldhave no idea what colors wereshowing up, except they al-

ways made sure there was awhite, yellow and green. Otherthan that, it was kind o a grabbag.

Te white, yellow andgreen jerseys still remain asthe top-tier jerseys come raceday, and solid jerseys are al-most always the frst to go.

Tese hodge-podge jer-seys were much appreciatedbut didnt make great race jer-seys, Loebig said. Tey didntbreathe as well as proession-ally made jerseys and resultedin a lot o hot, sweaty riders.

    Finally, in 2009, Loebigs

frst year as race director, the,IU Student Foundation en-listed the services o CanariCyclewear to provide the rid-ers with high-quality and pro-essional jerseys to wear onrace day.

Some aspects o the jer-sey selection never change, though. Fiji still tries to choosepurple because its the housecolor. Delta Gamma still triesto grab something black.

And the teams and ansalike still plan part o theirrace-day experience on whathappens the night o the jer-sey-selection meeting.

I know a bunch o teamsmake shirts or the ans that goalong with the jerseys or therace, so thats the day when

your identity basically is born,Bliss said.

    Alex McCarthy

    Our strategy this year

was more the clash, more to make us standout more. Its baby blueand hot pink, so itsgoing to look like a babyshower exploded orsomething.Laura Bliss, rider or RideOn

Tat day, Lambda Chifnished its attempt with atime o 2:40.31. Little didthe riders know that hadthey fnished 0.09 secondsaster, they would havebeen in the 61st Little 500and not in 35th place andout o the running.

    Not qualiying or the

    Little 500 was certainly a

learning experience, Bol-ling said. We believe ourteam was better than ourperormance at quals lastyear, so that was certainlydisappointing, but ourteam has responded witha rereshed, motivatedattitude.

It was that discontentthat drove the LambdaChi Alpha team to workharder and become betterorganized. When the rid-ers took the track at BillArmstrong Stadium or the2012 quals, their result let

no doubt on i they would

CINDER TRACK IS ONE-OF-A-KINDBY ALEX MCCARTHY

    [email protected]

Tere are other high-profle cycling races in the

world. Tere are other bigparty weeks and weekends atcolleges across the country.Tere are other big draws ormajor musical acts.

One actor, however, thatLittle 500 has that similarevents dont is a cinder biketrack. Its the only one o itskind in the world.

Te race began on a cin-

der running track in 1951when cinder running trackswere commonplace. Tetrack at Bill Armstrong Sta-dium has stayed the same,

while many other tracksare now asphalt, concrete,Mondo or any number odierent suraces.

Tis move rom cinderrunning tracks is a good one,Little 500 groundskeeperSteve McCutchen said.

I know in high school ...youd try to run on (the oldcinder tracks), and it was

like one o those nightmaredreams where you elt likeeverything was in slow mo-tion, McCutchen said. Youcouldnt move.

Tough the move romcinder worked or run-ning tracks, the decisionto stay with cinder is nec-essary or Little 500 races, said Delta au Delta CoachKen Nowakowski.

I think theyve kept itcinder just because o thetradition o the race, Nowa-kowski said. You wouldnt

be able to run the race theway it is on any other sur-ace.

Nowakowski rode com-petitively rom 1975 to 1989and was the head coachand race director at the In-dianapolis Velodrome or14 years. Te Velodrome is aconcrete track complete withsteeply banked turns.

Te Little 500 track isalmost completely at allthe way around, makingit necessary to slow downaround turns.

I you go ull speed intoturn three and our, Nowa-kowski said, youll end up inBedord instead o going intothe home stretch.

Te uneven cinder sur-ace also makes it a littlemore di cult to maneu-

ver, and the lack o bank-ing makes it tougher to passriders on the outside duringturns, Nowakowski said.

During exchanges in theLittle 500, skidding on thebikes is necessary. I it weredone on a concrete track, the

tires would be worn downand the rider would strug-gle to maintain control othe bike.

Obviously, on the hardsurace, you would weardown the tire relativelyquickly, and you would losecontrol o the bike, Nowa-kowski said. Not saying thatskidding on a Little Five bikeoers you control. No, on thecontrary, it does not.

Nowakowski has coachedDelta au Delta since 2009,so he has become amil-

    iar with the racing condi-

tions on race day. He saidmishaps and crashes arenot only common on thetrack but are almost ex-pected, and the cinder sur-ace has both its advantagesand disadvantages.

I you were to stumbleand crash on a concrete sur-ace, its a lot less unorgiv-ing than the cinder track,Nowakowski said. Althoughsome people would prob-ably question that i theyvecrashed hard and are pickingcinders out o their skin.

I know in high school. . . youd try to run on(the old cinder tracks),and it was like oneo those nightmaredreams where you eltlike everything wasin slow motion. Youcouldnt move.Steve McCutchen, Little 500groundskeeper
