Introduction'Lithgow pottery', the domestic wares produced by the Lithgow Valley CollieryCompany's Pottery Works at Lithgow in New South Wales, is the best-knownand the most numerous survivor of the many small potteries that attemptedlocal manufacture in Australia in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The plainer forms of jar and bottle are still commonly found. and although thefiner decorated pieces are rarely on the market there are good representativecollections in Esk Bank House at Lithgow. in the Museum of Applied Arts andSciences at Sydney, ~s well as many in private ownership.

The production of this pottery began in 1876 when 'terracotta wares' are firstmentioned as being made in addition to bricks and salt-glazed pipes. Coal miningin the Lithgow Valley expanded rapidly following the completion of the GreatZig-Zag section of the railway line in 1869 and by 1873 Lithgow Valley Colliery, which was to become the Lithgow Valley Colliery Company in 1877, had beenwell established. In the late '70s the company was making its own bricks andpipes, and the expansion of the domestic wares followed rapidly, aided by theexpertise of the skilled potter from England, James Silcock. In 1879 articles fromthe pottery were exhibited at the International Exhibition in Sydney, and in1881 the production of Bristol stone-glazed wares began, to be followed later, after experiment, by the appearance of Rockingham, Majolica and Cane wares.

Production continued into the '90s, when operations began to decline mainlybecause of the free trade policies of the colonial administration. The Lithgow Pottery was hard hit by competition from overseas manufacturers who were ableto dump their surplus pottery in New South Wales. The pottery virtually closeddown in 1896 and reopened for eighteen months in 1905. under EdwardBrownfield. a member of a well known Staffordshire family. In 1945 thecompany decided to concentrate on coal production and the brick and pipeworkssection was sold off. The remains of the pottery works were sold including manycases of unglazed wares. The mining interests of the Lithgow Valley Colliery Co.are now carried on by Coalex Pty Ltd.

The three catalogues or price lists reproduced here, those of 1889. 1895 andc.1906, are the only ones known to have survived. An earlier one of 1885 ismentioned in the Minute Books of the Lithgow Valley Colliery Co. but cannotbe traced. The 1889 and 1895 lists are both from the Lithgow Pottery and Brickworks of the Lithgow Valley Colliery Company; the smaller one of c.1906 is theBrickworks Price List only, signifying the continuing production of bricks, pipes, tiles, chimney pots, etc. The original lay-out has been preserved, except that thebird's-eye view of the site, which was the frontispiece to both the 1889 and 1895lists, is reproduced as a fold-out at the end, along with the poor-quality butinteresting uncaptioned views scattered through the catalogue of c.1906.

Further information on the original catalogues can be found in the Company'sMinute Books, now in the Mitchell Library, 'Sydney (MSS. Cat. Ref. 1881-1925,MLMSS 2384/2-16 and MLMSS 2384/17-23).

The evidence for the existence of the 1885 list is the entry for £11.0.0 toJ. Woods & Co. for the printing of 1,000 catalogues among the accountspresented and. passed for payment at the Company's meeting of 6 June 1885.Previous payments of £8.12.6 to the Australian Photo Co. for wooden blocksand of £4.8.0 to C. H. Hunt for sketches of pottery for the catalogue are to be

found in the Company Minutes of meetings held on 14 and 28 March 1885.Charles Henry Hunt was a Sydney artist who drew for The Illustrated SydneyNews and who was a foundation member of the Art Society of New South Wales. The Minutes of a meeting held on 23 May 1885, in answer to a letter fromMr D. W. Richardson of Orange offering to act as the Company's Agent in thattown for the sale of pottery etc., contains the entry 'Letter to be written thatthe Company are not appointing Agents, but. the accompanying catalogue willgive him all information to enable him to make a selection and cost thereof.' Todate no copy of this catalogue has been located.

In the Minutes of the Meeting held on 23 August 1889 there is a note of a letterfrom F. Lassetter & Co. Ltd asking for prices of drain pipes and also for a copyof the revised catalogue. The second catalogue was printed in 1889 by Marcusand Andrews of 13 Bridge Street, Sydney (successor to John Woods & Co.).Among the accounts presented and passed for payment at a meeting held on5 April 1889 are entries for the payment of £8.13.0 to the Electric PhotoEngraving Co. of Australasia for 'Drawing and Engraved Blocks' and of 12s6d for25 copies of The Illustrated Sydney News. Further entries from the MinuteBooks dated 3 May 1889 include payments of £25.0.0 to The Illustrated SydneyNews for Illustrated View of Works and of £22.3.3 to J. Woods & Co. for theprinting of the Catalogue. The artist for the foldout bird's-eye view of theLithgow Colliery Brickworks and Pottery which was used as the frontispiece ofthis catalogue was Alfred Scott Broad (1854-1929) a staff member of TheIllustrated Sydney News. The same drawing appeared as a full page illustration inThe Illustrated Sydney News of 7 March 1889.

The third catalogue was printed in 1895 by F. W. White of Market Street,Sydney. Payments to F. W. White (Printing account - £21.8.6) and to TheElectric Photo Co. for making blocks and drawings (£2.18.6) are recorded in theMinutes of the meeting of 10 May 1895.

The Brickworks' Price List printed for the Lithgow Valley Colliery Co. Ltd isundated but the address noted for the Lithgow Coal Association is not given asHoskins Building, Spring Street, Sydney until the 1906 edition of Sand's Sydney& Suburban Directory. The photographs used in this list are rather earlier andappeared in The Sydney Mail on 1 April 1903.
