Year 6 – Spring Term – Route 66 Literacy: We will learn the features , structure and layout of the following text types through reading and discussion: -arguments, discussion texts, biographies and autobiographies. This term there will be a strong focus on Grammar, Spelling and Punctuation especially word classes and sentence structure. Guided reading sessions will consist of learning how to answer the different types of questions and developing their reading stamina. RE: We will compare the beliefs of Sikhs and the Five Pillars of Islam. We will explore origins, traditions, holy books, celebrations and ways of life for these two different religions. PE and Swimming: We will bel earning a range of new skills when playing Volleyball including digging, volleying and spiking. When playing team games we will learn how to start a game with the correct serve and team tactics. Spanish: We will be asking and answering questions about different topics. We will be developing our conversation skills further with topics on places and directions. PSHE: We will be discussing, the importance of setting goals, persevering and celebrating success in our topic of ‘Going for Gold’. Computing: We will be looking at web designing, which will involve us using software designed for schools. We will also use the local school internal email system to teach all aspects of electronic communication including internet safety . Numeracy: We will be developing our understanding of formal calculation methods in problem solving. We will also be extending the knowledge of the number system by comparing fractions, decimals and percentages. In Data Handling we will be analysing data and calculating Mean, Median, Range and Mode. In shape we will be revising area and perimeter, different forms of symmetry and using the properties of shape. Science: We will be learning about how animals and plants adapt to their habitats and are interdependent of each other. We will look specifically at costal and mountainous habitats to link to our topic. Later in the term we will be investigating evolution; this will involve us studying different species of North American to see how they have evolved to live in their habitat. For evidence we will look at fossils and remains.

Route 66 Foundation subjects:

As Historians we will be studying the different life styles of various Native American tribes. There will be a special focus on the Mayan of Central and South America using artefacts, archaeology and writing to study their religion, past times, number system and everyday life. We will also investigate our European exploration affected these Tribes. As Geographers we will be using atlas and map skills to explore the various climates of North America. We will investigate the physical landscape and how this effects the human and animal characteristics of the region. We will be using high level geographical vocabulary to describe global positioning.

As Designers we will be investigating, designing, making and evaluating North America homes, Mayan artefacts and dream catchers.

As Artists we will be using collage techniques to recreate different climates and physical features of North America. We will also be appreciating the Multicultural influences in the Art of Totem poles and Tribal masks and recreating some of these.

As Musicians we will be looking at cyclic patterns and learning to play the drums and other instruments.

We will use and apply skills learnt in Literacy, Numeracy and ICT throughout the topic.

Events:

Visitor - Mr HowardDuring our extra special visits from Mr Howard we will be creating Native American Tepees. We will also compare our landscape and woodland surroundings to the different areas in North America.

End of term presentation

We will be setting up the classrooms as Route 66, covering the different areas from coast to coast across America.
