This is the Catholic Church’s first litany for lawyers and government officials. It has been ecclesiastically approved.

Introduction The word litany is from the Greek word, lite, for “prayer.” Litanies are an ancient form of Christian responsorial prayer. The “Litany of the Saints,” in one of its earliest forms, dates from at least 300 A.D. Certain processions of the early Church were called litanies. One can imagine the pilgrims responding to invocations and petitions as they walked in procession. Today, the form of responsorial prayer that is a litany is found in the current Roman rite for Mass in several places:

the Kyrie (“Lord, have mercy”); the Gloria (“You take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; You take

away the sings of the world, receive our prayer; You are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us”);

the Psalm response between the readings;

the Prayer of the Faithful; and the Agnus Dei (“Lamb of God”).

Outside the Mass, there are seven litanies approved by the Church for public

devotion:

the “Litany of the Saints,” the Marian “Litany of Loreto,” the Litany of the Holy Name, the Litany of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Litany of the Precious Blood, the Litany of the Queenship of Mary, and the Litany of St. Joseph.

Moreover, there are dozens of litanies used in private devotions. Virtually all litanies are focused on the Trinity, One of the Triune Persons, the Blessed Virgin, the angels or an angel, the saints or a saint. A few are focused on a particular cause, such as humility or the grace of a happy death. There is only one litany focused on a specific vocation, a litany for priests. The following Litany for Lawyers and Government Officials is newly composed for those who work in the field of law as lawyers, legislators, government officials, and judges.1 There are more than one million such individuals in the United States alone. It is hoped that the distribution of this litany will encourage the composition of additional litanies focused on specific vocations. In addition, as the number of canonized saints continues to grow, it is hoped that the distribution of this litany will encourage the composition of litanies prayed by people of various nationalities like The Litany of the Polish Nation, http://polishbreviary.wordpress.com/litany-of-the-polish-nation/, prayed by Saint John Paul II. The Litany of the Polish Nation identifies the saints and blesseds of Poland and the titles of the Virgin Mary revered among Poles.

This Litany for Lawyers and Government Officials is for private devotion. As a private devotion, it could be used before or after the funeral Mass, or during the wake of, a lawyer, legislator, government official, or judge. This is a long litany; it can be abbreviated of course and tailored to the occasion. In fact, notwithstanding its status as a private devotion, portions of it could be incorporated into a Mass, for example, as part of the Prayer of the Faithful of a funeral Mass, of the annual “Red Mass” (votive Mass of the Holy Spirit) that opens the term of court in some cities, or into a law school’s commencement Mass. (Incorporating some intercessions from a litany into a Prayer of the Faithful was suggested by Rev. Edward McNamara, professor of liturgy, Regina

May we not by appearance judge, nor by hearsay decide, but may we judge the poor with justice, and decide aright for the land’s afflicted. May we strike the ruthless with the rod of our mouths, and with the breath of our lips slay the wicked. May justice be the band around our waists, and faithfulness a belt upon our hips.
