This is a Leap Year, so February has a whopping 29 days—and a bunch of holidays to boot… First up is Valentine’s Day which falls on a Tuesday—better decide if it’s dinner, flowers, candy, jewelry or all of the above now… Next, it’s a long weekend for bankers and mail carriers on the 20th for President’s Day (also a good weekend to float a check)… Personally, I’m looking forward to celebrating Mardi Gras (21st) at whatever watering hole can make a Hurricane closest to Pat O’Brien’s (see page 13)… Another good excuse for a night out is “Leap Day.” It falls on a Wednesday, so it doubles as a hump day (for those of us who still celebrate the mid-week)… I intentionally didn’t start off with Groundhog Day—because that gard-darg rodent has been

wrong for years… Besides, why go to Punxsy to party and freeze? Save your money and come out Friday night and have an anti-furry rat party here—sounds like a plan to me… No matter, there’s stuff going on everywhere in town except the Kovalchick Complex. What’s up with that? Actually, that’s not entirely true, you can catch several IUP Basketball games there this month (4, 11, 18 & 25th), but unfortunately no rock concerts in the foreseeable future… With Spring Break only a month away, you might want to check out the Saturday Night Beach Parties at The Coney where you can win $500 towards travel… Sunday sports fans, all is not lost, the Penguins play every Sunday this month (see schedule on page 14)… In Beer News… D.G. Yuengling and Son has passed Boston Beer Co. as the largest U.S.-owned brewer. Yuengling shipments were up 16.9% to 2.5 million barrels, putting it eighth, one ahead of Boston’s 2.4 million barrels. Moving right along… Here is where I usually say, “for more visit us on 157LIVE.com, and/or find us at Facebook.com/157LIVE”—And all of that is true (for us); but what really aggravates me, are those places that have a facebook page for the sake of having a facebook page, but haven’t the foggiest idea on how to use it—or update it regularly (for more see Tracy’s article on page 26)… Lastly, for those who don’t know about it, try Google+ it’s way better than facebook (we use it).

INDIANA DINING A to Z
157LIVE.com 21
This month I submit for your perusal, a travelogue of Mediterranean cuisine—mostly Greek—available here in Indiana. First stop, the Venice Café & Pizzeria. While they offer an extensive menu selection; here are a couple items with feta: 1) Mediterranean Pasta — Penne with artichoke hearts, mushrooms,
red onions and tomatoes topped with feta in a warm garlic butter sauce (they also throw in a side of salad and garlic bread). This pasta salad is good hot or cold (photo left).
2) Mediterranean Pizza —White garlic sauce covered with red onions, artichoke hearts, mushrooms, continued on next page

tomatoes, feta, mozzarella and provolone. If you’re a cheese-lover, like I am, this pizza can be a religious experience. Great crust, too! (see photo lower left).
Next up is Romeo’s Pizzeria and Mediterranean Kitchen. While you can get pasta, gourmet pizza, stromboli/calzone, wings, salads and desserts there, I ordered one of their signature entrées. Turkish Köfte — Rolled patties of charbroiled ground lamb and beef, spiced and served with cracked wheat (bulgur) pilaf and pita bread. For the uninitiated, bulgar has the consistency of rice, and makes a nice bed on the plate for this dish. As for the Köfte (below), Romeo’s version are sausage-like in appearance and taste—minus the fennel—if you know what I mean. Traditionally, they usually look more like a meatball, but what’s in a shape? That said, if you’re a meat lover—particularly

lamb, this will satisfy; and with the option of a wheat pita, you get your daily fiber requirement as well.
For authentic Greek cuisine there are a couple of other stand-outs. First up is Tom’s Pizza and Restaurant (you wouldn’t know it by the name). I recently re-sampled their Gyros (photo center page) and was reminded just how good they are. They pile a healthy-portion of lamb on delicious soft pita. The meat is well seasoned—with pepper coming to the forefront (in a very good way). Fresh lettuce, tomato, red onions and cucumber sauce complete this hand-held meal.
Last, but not least, you gotta try The Pizza House’s Greek Salad, Gyro Salad, Gyros or Heated-Gyro Hoagie—delish!
Obviously, many other restaurants offer the flavors of Greece and eastern Mediterranean cuisine, like The Pita Pit—to name another. In future issues we’ll explore the map even further to Italy, Mexico, Ireland, China and beyond, as we
taste Indiana “a bite at a time.”
But first, as Steve Jobs used to say, “There’s one more
thing…”
In case you didn’t notice the construction crew at The Coney last month, they put in a new kitchen (see photos below).
They’ve added capacity and some pretty
nifty gadgets.
Expect an e x p a n d e d menu and
even faster service. By the
way, they’ve got some great salads and
dinner entreés there. Check it out.
—Stay hungry my friend, and bon appétit!
One side of the new Coney kitchen—all newequipment; they were just finishing up the other side when we took this photo in January…

Businesses are quick to get social media religion and even quicker to lose it when they find it does have a price. As a marketing tool, social media requires garden-like maintenance, leaving the internet littered with dormant and abandoned accounts. It’s better to not have an account than to let visitors stumble upon one that hasn’t been updated in a year. If you decide to jump on the bandwagon, here a few things to keep in mind. You don’t have to be everywhere. Some networks are more suited to certain types of businesses than others. Look at similar companies in major m a r k e t s and see what they use. Also delete any accounts that you find difficult maintain or use regularly. Don’t abandon your traditional website. It’s a stable presence in a constantly changing world (MySpace *cough*) and social media works in support of it. Traditional sites allow for more information and in greater depth, not too mention unlimited flexibility in design. They’re a better home for information that’s slow to change but should be quickly and easily accessible. In other words, you can “set it and forget it” for greater lengths of time. Social media is fluid by nature, part on of an on-going conversation. So... If you’re going to set up an account, use it. While you don’t want to bombard your followers and fans with relentless posts, keep it current and regular. Your updates enter a stream (a feed) and compete for
attention with everyone else’s. Aim for no less than once a week but no more than once or twice per day (this can be higher for Twitter users provided the content’s good). If you have a personal account, think about your own behavior and experience as a user. Once a person decides to follow you via a social site, rarely will they visit your actual profile page. Especially if they’re using a mobile device, people will merely check their own feed. Also, depending on your audience, some times of day may reach more users than others. A 2011 KISSmetrics study
found Facebook usage peaks around noon EST, suggesting an influx of working adults
logging on during their lunch hour. Make it about
sharing, not just selling. Post links and stories that relate
to your products and services, that inform and entertain, but aren’t always a direct sell. Remodeling? Participating in a local event? Updates help create a sense of community and make your customers part of it. Feeling constantly advertised to alienates users and prompt “unlikes.” Because it is a conversation, social media is also means of acquiring feedback. Address questions and negative comments promptly and be careful what you let linger on your page. This is your brand speaking so give it a voice. All too often posts sound like they’re coming from a generic corporate speaker. Be yourself, but be responsible. If you wouldn’t say it in public, don’t post it.

RoGUE CHoCoLATE SToUT “If I were a bottle of Rogue, I would be the Chocolate Stout… but wait, I am!” —Sebbie Buhler, “The Face” of Rogue Chocolate StoutThe takeaway: Creamy and tastes like... chocolate!
A product of Oregon-based craft-brewer, Rogue Ales, Rogue Chocolate Stout was originally developed for export to Japan. Its 12-ounce bottle featured label text in Kanji (pictograms of Chinese origin that are used in contemporary Japanese writing) and a teddy bear sporting a pink heart on his belly. Chocolate Stout was finally released to the US market for Valentine’s Day 2001; this time in a 22-ounce
bottle whose label bears an illustration of “Roguester” and craft beer advocate, Sebbie Buhler.
Reporting & Drinking Beer in Indiana & Beyond!
Cheers! Calling All Beer Lovers to by Samuel A. Kenly
“A fine beer may be judged with only one sip, but it’s better to be thoroughly sure.”
Chocolate Stout is frequently described as complex and creamy with just hint of bitterness but a whole lot of chocolate and coffee flavors. Chocolate Stout pairs well with beef dishes and desserts. On the beer’s blog (RogueChocolateStout.com) Sebbie herself strongly suggests cheeses such as aged cheddar, blue cheese, goat cheese, stilton or brie.A gold award winner at the Mondial de la Biere Festival in Strasbourg, France (and the only American beer to win there), Rogue Chocolate Stout can be found at our Indiana Giant Eagle. For all you love birds out there looking to add a little spice to your Valentines Day, consider picking up a bottle of Lindemans Framboise (featured in the December issue of 157 and also available at Giant Eagle). Mix it 50/50 with Rogue Chocolate Stout to make chocolate covered raspberry beer desserts. That special someone you share it with will be sure to melt in your arms. Cheers!
