He flies into the relationship and onlythen realizes he has no flight plan. This interactiveworkshop will help participants recognize whenthey are working with a superman and how toteach this client about a flight plan to navigate thedrama and pain of the relationship.

12:00pm – 4:30pm Workshop B“The First 6 Sessions of Counseling”Mark Sanders, LCSW, CADCResearch reveals clients with substance usedisorders make most of their progress within thefirst 6 sessions of counseling, yet nearly 50% ofclients are no-shows at their second session.Participants will learn 6 strategies to engageclients in counseling within the first 5 minutes ofcontact, how to overcome resistance within thefirst 3 sessions of counseling, and evidence basedapproaches which help clients successfullycomplete a minimum of 6 sessions.

8:30am - 10:00am Keynote“Building a Recovery Oriented System of Care inIllinois" - Rex E. Alexander, SUPR, ProjectDirector and Jessica Hayes, ICB, Executive DirectorDHS-SUPR began introducing recovery orientedvalues, principles and services into its system uponimplementation of the federally funded Access toRecovery (ATR) program in 2004. Progress hasbeen made in reorienting the system from focusingsolely on the traditional acute care approach to achronic care approach. Shifting to this requires theentire system (prevention, intervention, treatmentand recovery management) to embrace a recoveryoriented approach. This keynote will explore theState’s progress from ATR to the current system

and present SUPR’s plan to expand the continuumof care and ensure an appropriate mix of substanceuse disorder services and recovery supports for youth,adults and families is available and accessiblethroughout the State.

10:15am – 4:30pm Workshop C “Holistic Treatment Techniques for CriminalJustice Clients" - Dona Howell, MS, CRADC,CODP II and Jim Stiers, CADCParticipants will discover how a holisticapproach to substance use disorder treatmentmay be the best strategy to employ with criminaljustice clients. The workshop will explore thedifferent components of the approach, focusingon the four quadrants of wellness; physical, mental,spiritual and social, with special attention given tostress management.

10:15am – 4:30pm Workshop D “Adult Children of Disordered Parents” Cheri DeMoss, MA, LCPC, CAADC, NCADCII,MAC, NCRSThe connection between parents’ behaviorsdetermines over 81% of client’s choices inadulthood. Participants will learn the differencebetween substance use disorders, personalitydisorders, and dysfunction as well as how torecognize the influences, similarities, anddifferences that create the fabric of clients’ lives.This workshop will address how to help clientsmake mindful choices grounded in their feelingsand interests that make them uniquely who theyare without replicating their parents’ actions.

10:15am – 4:30pm Workshop E “Those Who Are Serving and Have Served in theMilitary: An Examination of the BehavioralHealth Impact on Their Families and LovedOnes” – Joseph E. Troiani, Ph.D., CADCThis workshop will focus on the impact of thosewho are serving in the military (Active Duty,Reserves, or National Guard) or have served inthe military (Veterans or Retirees) on theirfamilies. The focus will be on the behavioralhealth impact on their spouses/partners,children, parents, and siblings. This will alsoinclude understanding how they cope with aloved one being disabled, a death or beingMissing in Action/Prisoner of War. A broadreview of available resources and programs willbe discussed.

Workshop F “Emerging Issues in Problem Gambling” Ashley Trantham, MSGambling addiction affects thousands of peopleacross Illinois and often includes a comorbidityof conditions that require specialized treatments.This workshop will review current trends amongstate problem gambling helplines. Participantswill learn about outreach tools to connect withthose populations suffering from gamblingdisorder as well as special populations includingadolescents, Veterans, the LGBTQ community,and seniors.

Workshop G “Drug Intelligence Briefing on Illicit Drug Trends"Joseph E. Troiani, Ph.D., CADCThis workshop will be a drug intelligence briefingon illicit drug trends at the international, national,and local levels. The international focus willexamine emerging drug trends that have thepotential of a national impact. It will also includean examination of the relationship between illicitdrug trends and the potential impact at thecommunity level.

Workshop H “The Role of Substance Use in Media”Lawrence A. Dunbar, MS, CAADC, CODP II,CPS, PCGCThis workshop will focus on the role of howsubstance use has been portrayed in the media inthe 20th and early 21st centuries. It will look atvisual media in the movies and television,including commercials and marketing. Videoclips will highlight the topic and discussion willinvestigate how Western culture, legislation,and advocacy have been affected.

Workshop I “WRAP® for Individuals with Trauma Histories” Cindy Mayhew, BA, CRSSParticipants will gain knowledge of the WRAP®model and its usefulness for survivors of trauma,will learn how to relay information to othersincluding those they reach in their helpingprofession, and will be able to write a mini-wrapfor themselves. Information on how to accessclasses and facilitator trainings will be provided.

Workshop J “Medication Assisted Therapy for Opioid UseDisorder: Evidence-based Antidote to thePrescription Drug and Heroin Crisis” John A. Peterson, MDThis workshop will discuss the theory andpractice of established medical treatments foropioid addiction. Participants will be better ableto understand the mechanisms of action of availableopiate agonists, methadone and buprenorphine;contrast opiate receptor antagonist therapy,naltrexone, and its approved forms of administration;assess appropriate candidates for agonist versusantagonist therapies; and critique practical experiencein rates of treatment success utilizing either modeof intervention.

Workshop K “Life’s Transitions: Addressing Treatment andRecovery with a Team Approach From Adolescenceto Young Adulthood"Kellie Gage, MS, Ed-Psy, CAADCLife transitions are periods in time whenindividuals can experience major changes.Changes that can bring instability as the personpasses through each period. This workshop willfocus on best practices for building healthysupport systems for adolescents and young adultsdealing with substance use and co-occurringissues, with a primary focus on the TransitionalAged Youth (TAY), ages 18-25. It will discusshow IDHS/SUPR providers through the StateYouth Treatment-Implementation (SYT-I)SAMHSA/CSAT Award, are utilizing theAdolescent Community Reinforcement Approach,coupled with Assertive Community Care, bothevidenced based models in their work withTAY.

Workshop L “Staying Nimble in a Challenging Environment:Lessons in Leadership” (A Training of LeadersPresentation) - Michael Moran, MA, CAADC,ATE and Don Pinkston, LCSW, CADC, ATEThe current opioid crisis, like others (HIV,methamphetamine, cocaine) before it requiresleadership to identify and utilize resources in animmediate way to reduce the negative consequencesand even deaths that accompany this problem.This workshop will help participants identify a

Workshopsleadership process to address these cyclical crisesthat are the history of the substance use field.Topics will include the ability to respond todata with programmatic interventions andmethods to influence and increase staffparticipation in new programming.

Workshop M “Overview of Common Behavior Disorders”David W. Schilling, MA, CAADC, LCPC This workshop will review behavior disorders,including depression, anxiety, personalitydisorders, and schizophrenia. It will highlightdual diagnosis concerns and “chicken or theegg” arguments regarding whether the twodisorders (psychiatric and substance use) arecoexisting or primary versus secondary to eachother. Suicide issues, as well as preventionmethods, will be discussed.

Workshop N “What’s Love Got to Do With It? EffectiveStrategies to Meet the Unique Needs of JusticeInvolved Girls and Women” - Leslie Balonick,MA, CRADC and Kris Gamm-Smith, MAWomen are entering the criminal justice systemat an alarming rate, while the male populationis decreasing. Opportunities for trauma, substanceuse, and mental health treatment to buildresiliency and promote healing need to beprovided. It is time to come to terms with the factthat gender matters and learn to understand andapply gender responsive principles both incommunity and custodial settings. Women’sunique needs must be addressed in an integratedmanner across all stages of the justice system.

Workshop O “Attachments, Affect, Anxiety, Addiction” Brian Lengfelder, LCPC, CAADC, CCJP, SAP,MAC, ACRPS, CSAT, CMATAttachment theory and affect regulation theorycharacterize addiction as an attachment disorderinduced by a person’s attempt at self-soothingbecause of deficits in character structures andinternal anxiety. This workshop is designed toeducate, explore, and provide appropriateclinical education and interventions for attachmentproblems, affect dysregulation, and anxietyissues associated with addiction.

Workshop P “Who is the Client? Meet the Family”Nancy J. Phillips, MSEd, ICAADC, CFPPAs family research indicates, participation byfamily members and significant others in ayoung person’s recovery from substance usedisorders is important. Not only is thisimportant for the young person but it isimportant for the family members. However,

many clinicians and families alike do notrecognize the family and significant others areoften in need of their own services such aseducation, therapy, and ongoing support. Toassist professionals in their work with the new“client,” the family, a review of research relatedto families will be shared. To achieve a deeperunderstanding of a loved one’s journey inrecovery, a panel of family members with “livedexperience” will share their story and answerquestions.

Workshop Q “ICB Ethics Code and Procedure” - Michael Durr,ICB Legal Counsel and Joseph Lokaitis, MA,LCPC, CAADCThis workshop will provide an overview of therecently revised ICB Code of Ethics and Codeof Procedure for Certified Alcohol and OtherDrug Professionals. Follow along with interactivediscussion and practical examples for supervisorsand frontline staff. Clinical supervision in relationto ethical issues will be discussed.

8:30am – 1:00pm Workshop R“Effectively Addressing the Full Range of Clients”Brian Lengfelder, LCPC, CAADC, CCJP, SAP,MAC, ACRPS, CSAT, CMATSubstance use counselors are finding themselvesoverwhelmed and lacking in clinical skills forhandling the increasing demands for assessing,diagnosing, treating, and referring of behavioraladdictions and co-occurring disorders that arepresenting at their agencies. It is importantcounselors make a professional vow to practicewithin their scope and make referrals forservices they are not competent of providing. Itis recommended counselors attend continuingeducation programs focused on special populations,behavioral addictions, co-occurring disorders, andsubstance use disorders. Moreover, it is the centralfocus of a Recovery Oriented System of Care tocreate an infrastructure to address the full rangeof clients with substance use disorders and relatedproblems.
