What is the main frustration with Social Media Monitoring tools ?

The problem• Alert features of major search engines (e.g. Google Alerts) are handicapped by the latency induced by web crawling: typical alert cycle is over a day

• Listening to “the entire web” generates noise and delay. Most efficient tools today deliver alerts with lags of several hours and more.

Selective listening

• Most Social Media Monitoring professionals have come to realize that listening to well selected sources (e.g. the influencers) is as comprehensive as listening to the “entire Web”.

• It is less noisy, more efficient.

• It also enables the use of near real time engines that address the excessive lag time issue.

Permanent queries

• A Visibium query is a permanent search, i.e. it is run and run again at frequent intervals on newly pulled‐in posts.

• Visibium supports two different types of search:

– Keyword‐based analytical search– Score‐based search, where search terms are

weighted and a match is positive when scores reaches a threshold.

• Use of professional‐grade full‐text search tools:

– Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT)– Wildcards (single‐character or multiple‐

character substitution, truncating)– Fuzzy searches– Proximity searches (word proximity).

• A color is assigned to a query for enhanced usability. When a post is a match to a query:– The post is marked with a flag of

the query color– Matching terms are highlighted

with the same color directly in the text of the post.

• Alerts are defined at a query level. A post matching the query will trigger the associated alert (SMS, e‐mail, Jabber).

Low latency by design

• Every few minutes (*) Visibium pulls new content from every user‐defined source, applies the filters, performs a full text incremental indexing and runs all the permanent queries on the new posts.

• Subsequent alerts are immediately triggered; a refresh is available on monitoring stations; output feeds are updated and online statistics are refreshed.

(*): every 3rd minute for Twitter feeds, every 15th minute for other feeds. The intervals can be further reducedon custom accounts.

Reprocessingor going back in time

• Visibium reprocessing feature is a retrospective search on the sphere, i.e. a search that is run on all previously collected posts in the account.

• A way to go back in time, the reprocessing is an useful tool to zoom into the first minutes of a viral spread, the flashpoint of a social media crisis.

• And to understand how a crisis has been spreading so far, by using search terms that are now tailored to the crisis

Page 10: Listen better listen faster - v1.2

Delivering results

• Results are listed in a single stream of messages on a monitoring station

• A user (e.g. monitoring agent) can confirm or manually overwrite the matches.

• Output feeds can be created based on the search results

• A post aging management feature can automatically delete older posts

• All actions are logged and a change history is available for each post.
