A MAP OF THE DIOCESE.

COMPILED IN 1877,

WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF THE CLERGY,

13r ONE Of THEIR NUMlJER.

PREFACE.

The Diocesan Map of the Church of England in Newfoundland, to

which this Handbook refer>, wa., commenced with the approval of the

late Dr. Feild, when Lord Bishop of Newfoundland, in the latter part

of the year 1873. Partly through difficulties in postal communication

betwecn my own Mj"ion and other pmts of Nell·foundland, and partly from

my time being much occupied in parochial work, the puhlieation of the

Map has been delayed until the present year.

This delay has not, however, been without ad\"Ontagc, haying afforded

me opportunities of obtaining information during Visitation Voyages iuthe Church Ship, when it htl.> been my priv;Jegc to accompany tl,e Bishop.

Yet, in spite of these advantages and of the assistance so readily and

kindly afforded by my brother Clergy, for which I take this opportunity

of rendering to them my be,t thanks, I fear that many mistakcs and

omissions will be found both in the Map and Handbook.

For sueb faults, I can only ask the indulgence of those who consult

either one or the otber, and rcqucst that I may be informed of them, with

a view to tbeir being corrected, should any copies be called for at a future

time.

It will, I trust, be remembered tlrat my aim has been to tnke account

for practical purposes of the work of the Clmreh of England. I have

neither had opportunity to ascertain, nor space to recount, the large

amount of work, both religion. and educational, which is being carried

on by the Roman Catholies and the Wesleyans in the Colony of New

foundland.

iv.

It was originally intended to place the infoMnation contained in thisHandbook npon the Map iL-eIf, bnt the pr"""nt plan was finally adopted

for the following rea.;olb: fllitly, on acconnt of the large amount of spaceupon the Map, which the li,t of Settlements would harc occupied;

>econdly, on account of the expen'e of printing beiug less than that ofengraving; tllir(lly, on account of the variable nature of the statisticalinformation, which, it i~ hoped, Clergymen in charge of Mi~:-;ions mayfind it more comenient to keep up to date in the Handbook, than wouldhaye been tile c""e with Tables upon the ~Iap.

At the S"",ion of tl,e Synod held this year, a Committee was appointedto define the bowubrie:- of Mi~~ion!', and I very much regret that I amnot able to arail lll)',elf of their labours, which arc not yet fini, hed, but

it docs not seem desirable to delay any longcr the completion of the Work.

'ro the Right Rev. Bishop Kelly, D.D., when Coadjutor Bishop ofNewfoundland, and to the Rev. G. M. Johuson, I am indebted for muchns.<.;il'ltancc in determining the gencrnl plan of the Map, and the form oftbe Stati.;tical Information.

To the courle,)' of Alexander lIurray, Esq., F.G S, C.lI.G, I amindcbtcd for all the detaib of the interiur of the counlr~', wllich he allowedme to klYe copied from hi, Ucologieal Suryey of Newfow, dland; and my

best thanks arc due to Sir Bryao Robin,on, of the Snpremc Court ofNewfoundland, fill' drawing up the General InfiJrmation upon the Mapconcerning the Colony; also to J. Delancy, Esq., P.M.G., in St John's,for Statistics conceming the wcathrr.

It will be a cause for much thankfuln= to 111e if this Map and Handbook arc founll of any ~er\'ice in carf)'ing on the work of the Church ofEngland in Newfowldland and Labrador, a work with which the namesof the Society for the Propagation of the Go,pel in Foreign Parts and

our much loyed and lamented Bishop Feild, will for eyer be associated.

J. J. C.

F. of All Saints, 1877.

EXPLANATION OF TABLES.

S P. G. after a JlIission shows that it is mainly supported by theSociety for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts.

The year placed in brackets after a Deanery or a Cborcb, indicates that

the Deanery was formed or the Chorch bnilt in snch year. 2nd or 3rd

after a Church means that it is the 2nd or 3rd Chorch bnilt npon thesame site.

In the first colnmn, Roman Nnmerals refer to the JlIission, and Arabic

Nnmerals to the Settlements in each JlIission.

Licensed Lay-Readers are Laymen licensed by the Bishop to condnctccrtain services, and to read sermons; the work of the Chorch of England

in Newfonndland j,; largely indebted to their assistance, which is nsually

gi"cn almost gratuitonsly.

In the colnmn for School Houses, cc indicates that the School ismaintained by thc Colonial and Continental Chorch Society, and an

asterisk shows that the School Honse is nsed also for Divine Service.

N after the name of a Settlement, shows that tl,e population of adjoining

Settlements is included.

Thc extcnt of a JlIission in Sea Miles is intcnded to show approximately

the distance to be traversed in visiting the chief Settlements, whcn pro

ceeding from one end to the other of a :M:is,;ion. If considered in con

jnnction with the nnmber of Members of the Chorch of England, it alfords

some means of estimating the relative amonnt of difficulty in working aMission.

, Chapel' means a bnilding nscd solely for Divine Servicc, bnt not

consecrated.
