Executive summary

The current document features all the projects funded by the European Union’s Horizon

2020 framework programme which include at least one participant from Ukraine. The

aforementioned projects have at least a signed Grant Agreement, but the vast majority of

them are currently ongoing projects. In this document 36 projects can be found with

Ukrainian participation with their specific details.

The list of projects has been conducted via desk research based on an eCorda database

search as of September 2016 after 241 calls. The eCorda database provided extensive

content and information of the projects, however every single one of them could not have

been included in the list. Thus the following pieces of information were involved in case of

each project: the project acronym, the name of the project, the call identifier for which the

project was initially proposed, the overall contribution from the European Union, and the

name of the involved Ukrainian partner. Beside the mentioned pieces of information further

content was also provided via additional desk research, so a short description, the website

and the logo of the projects can be found in the list as well. These pieces of information

were searched via Cordis database and Google. Some required details were not found in

each case either because there was no official website of the project or because there was

no available project logo. The main sources of the short summaries were the official

websites of each projects, but if such website did not exist in the time of the search or did

not provide such information the short description of the Cordis database was incorporated

in the document.

PROGRESS – Prediction of Geospace Radiation Environment and solar wind parameters

Call ID: H2020-PROTEC-2014

EC contribution: € 2,358,230.50

Ukrainian partner(s) involved:

Space Research Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the National

Space Agency of Ukraine

Short description:

The smooth functioning of the European economy and the welfare of its citizens depends

upon an ever-growing set of services and facilities that are reliant on space and ground

based infrastructure. Examples include communications (radio, TV, mobile phones),

navigation of aircraft and private transport via GPS, and service industries (e.g. banking).

These services, however, can be adversely affected by the space weather hazards. The

forecasting of space weather hazards, driven by the dynamical processes originating on the

sun, is critical to the mitigation of their negative effects. The goal of PROGRESS is to develop

an accurate and reliable forecast system for the occurrence and severity of space weather

events. Within project PROGRESS we aim to develop a European tool to forecast the solar

wind parameters just upstream of the Earth's magnetosphere. We will develop a

comprehensive set of forecasting tools for geomagnetic indices by combining the most

accurate data based forecast of electron fluxes at GEO with the most comprehensive physics

based model of the radiation belts currently available to deliver a reliable forecast of

radiation environment in the radiation belts.

functionality and safety. Demonstrators will be designed to fulfil scalability towards

industrial needs and focus on TRL5/TRL6. End users from a wide range of industrial sectors

(transport, construction, leisure and electronics) will adapt the knowledge gained from the

project and test the innovative high added value demonstrators. An in-depth and broad

analysis of material development, coupled with dedicated multi-scale modelling, recycling

and safety studies will be conducted in parallel for two types of materials.

Current technological demands are increasingly stretching the properties of traditional

materials to expand their applications to more severe or extreme conditions, whilst

simultaneously seeking cost-effective production processes and final products. The aim of

this project is to demonstrate the influence of different surface enhancing and modification

techniques on carbon fibre (CF)-based materials for high value and high performance

applications. These materials are a route to further exploiting advanced materials, using

enabling technologies for additional functionalities, without compromising structural

integrity. CF based materials have particular advantages due to their lightweight, good

mechanical, electrical and thermal properties. Current generation CFs have extensively been

used in a multitude of applications, taking advantage of their valuable properties to provide

solutions in complex problems of materials science and technology. The limits of the current

capability of such materials, however, have now been reached. MODCOMP will develop the

next generation of CF-based materials for structural and electronics applications. The

benefits of fibre-based materials have clearly been shown in aerospace applications which

require lightweight, high strength, high stiffness, and high fatigue-resistant materials.

Flintstone2020 – Next generation of superhard non-CRM materials and solutions in tooling

Call ID: H2020-SC5-2015-one-stage

EC contribution: € 4,996,180.00

Ukrainian partner(s) involved:

V.N. Bakul Institute for Superhard Materials of the National Academy of Sciences

Short description:

Flintstone2020 aims to provide a perspective for the replacement of two important CRMs –

tungsten (W) and cobalt (Co) – which are the main constituents for two important classes of

hard materials (cemented carbides/WC-Co, and PCD/diamond-Co), by developing innovative

alternative solutions for tooling operating under extreme conditions.

Fundamental knowledge on mechanical properties and wear of different tools, gained in

machining tests and dedicated experiments from WP1 is passed onto the respective WPs.

WP2 will experiment on small samples with 3-9 mm Ø for testing the fundamental behavior

of new B-X phases and particularly as a feedback for binder matrix improvement. In WP3

samples (12 mm Ø) will be investigated from individual HPHT runs for characterization and

testing to guide high pressure sintering process optimization. The HPHT process and the

samples produced are then upscaled to the industrial mass production level in WP4. In WP5,

demonstrator cutting tools from full size HPHT synthesis test runs will be prepared via laser

cutting and consecutive macro- and microshaping of tool geometry within WP5. In WP6

aspects of environmental benefits in the total life cycle of the superhard materials will be

investigated, including health and safety aspects. WP7 will focus on exploitation and

dissemination.

EQUINOX – A novel process for manufacturing complex shaped Fe-Al intermetallic parts resistant to extreme environments

Call ID: H2020-SC5-2015-one-stage

EC contribution: € 4,678,345.00

Ukrainian partner(s) involved:

Yuzhnoye Design Office Named After Mikhail Yangel

Short description:

There is a need to find solutions to replace Critical Raw Materials (CRMs) such as Chromium,

Nickel, Molybdenium and Vanadium in high volume end consumer products. Steels and

superalloys with considerable amounts of these CRMs are widely used in many industrial

applications, particularly under extreme conditions where corrosion and wear resistance are

needed. It is generally accepted, that intermetallics in particular low cost FeAl offer

outstanding material properties. Unfortunately it is difficult to translate their properties to

real products, as intermetallics suffer from low ductility at ambient temperature and poor

machinability. The impact of FeAl intermetallics as a low cost Cr-free alternative for stainless

steel would therefore be much higher if a cost effective industrial process would be

available, that allows to manufacture complex 3-D geometries of almost unlimited shapes

from small grain size (0.1-5 µm) high ductility material. The main objective of EQUINOX is to

develop a novel process that allows to substitute Cr/Ni based (stainless) steel parts used in

high volume end consumer products such as in the lock industry, electronics, process

industry and automotive industry with a novel near net shape production technology for a

new class of highly advanced ductile Fe-Al based intermetallics. Ductility at low to medium

temperatures, while maintaining good tensile strength and optimum level of residual stress

will be based on a radical new production process that use abundant raw material Fe3O4

and Al2O3.

PANG – Pathogen and Graphene

Call ID: H2020-MSCA-RISE-2015

EC contribution: € 580,500.00

Ukrainian partner(s) involved:

Lvivskyi Nationalnyi Medychnyi Universytet Imeni Danyla Halytskoho

Short description:

Complications related to infectious diseases have significantly reduced, particularly in the

developed countries, due to the availability and use of broad-range antibiotics and wide

variety of antimicrobial agents. Excessive use of antibiotics and antimicrobial agents

increased significantly the number of multi-drug resistant (MDR) bacteria. This has resulted

in a serious threat to public health. The inexorable rise in the incidence of antibiotic

resistance in bacterial pathogens, coupled with the low rate of emergence of new clinically

useful antibiotics, has refocused attention on finding alternatives to overcome antimicrobial

resistance. Novel strategies aiming to reduce the amount of antibiotics, but able to prevent

and treat animal and human infections should be investigated, evidenced and approved.

Among the various approaches, the use of graphene and its derivatives is currently

considered a highly promising strategy to overcome microbial drug resistance. In line with

this interest in graphene by the European Commission through the graphene ‘flagship’

initiatives, the project responds by exploring the utility of novel graphene based

nanocomposites for the management and better understanding of microbial infections. The

anti-microbical potential of the novel graphene based nanomaterials, the possibility of using

such structures for the development of non-invase therapies together with the

understanding of the mechanism of action will be the main focal points of the proposed

project entitled “PANG”, relating to Pathogen and Graphene.

assymcurv – The influence of the cell membrane asymmetry and curvature on the functioning of membrane proteins and the transport of therapeutic compounds

Call ID: H2020-MSCA-RISE-2015

EC contribution: € 202,500.00

Ukrainian partner(s) involved:

Institute of Physics of National Academy of Science of Ukraine;

Materials Research Center

Short description:

Real cell membranes are essentially asymmetric and non-planar. Outer leaflets of the plasma

membranes contain neutral lipids and glycolipids, while the inner leaflets host practically all

anionic lipids and phosphoinositides. In addition to asymmetric composition the membranes

are usually curved due to spontaneous curvature of the membrane lipids and an influence of

membrane proteins and cytoskeleton. There are many cellular phenomena, which are

influenced by the asymmetry and the membrane curvature such as formation of synaptic

vesicles, blebs and apoptotic bodies, membrane fusion and splitting, budding of enveloped

viruses, endo and exocytosis, etc. In this work the project proposes comprehensive

interdisciplinary study of the influence of membrane asymmetry and curvature on the

functioning of integral membrane proteins and the transmembrane transport of therapeutic

compounds (such as cisplatin and its derivatives).

The goal is to reveal major physical factors, which distinguish asymmetric and curved

membrane environment and govern interactions, orientation and diffusion of the small

molecules (drugs) and large integral proteins. The combination of experimental methods

(“wet” biochemistry and molecular biology, enhanced infrared and Raman spectroscopy)

and computer simulations (coarse-grained and atomistic molecular dynamics, quantum

chemistry) would be used in the project in complimentary manner.

PELICO – Peptidomimetics with photocontrolled biological activity

Call ID: H2020-MSCA-RISE-2015

EC contribution: € 688,500.00

Ukrainian partner(s) involved:

Enamine Limited Liability Company, Research and Production Enterprise

Short description:

The expertise, resources and specific knowledge of all participating parties will be combined

to achieve a breakthrough in design, synthesis and application of peptide analogues

(peptidomimetics) possessing photo-controlled biological activities, with special emphasis on

anti-microbial and anti-cancer activities. The main idea behind the Project consists in

chemical incorporation of artificial photo-controllable building blocks into known biologically

active peptides by replacing their natural building blocks – the amino acid residues. Such a

modification would provide photocontrolled peptidomimetics which can reversibly change

their structure between two different photo-forms upon irradiation with light of different

wavelength. The participating parties possess general know-how for design of the

peptidomimetics which can exist in two photo-forms, biologically active and inactive ones,

reversibly interconvertible by light of different wavelength. This opens a possibility to

convert inactive peptidomimetics to active compounds by irradiation with physiologically

benign light directly in tissues with very high spatiotemporal precision and can be a

fundamental basis of new therapeutic strategies. The research staff exchange and other

activities planned under the Project will be dedicated to accomplish four complementary

work packages: (i) carrying out pharmacokinetic and toxicity studies of the photocontrolled

peptidomimetics synthesized by the parties previously; (ii) evaluation of novel

photocontrolled building block chemotypes for their compatibility with peptides; (iii)

creation of new photocontrolled peptidomimetics, especially based on the novel building

blocks and the know-how developed by the parties (e.g. using “stapled peptides”

technology); (iv) multidisciplinary training of the researchers whose future work will be

aimed at further development of the most advanced photocontrolled peptidomimetics as

drugs suitable for photodynamic therapy.

HUNTER – Advanced Humidity to Electricity Converter

Call ID: H2020-MSCA-RISE-2015

EC contribution: € 873,000.00

Ukrainian partner(s) involved:

Donetsk Institute for Physics and Engineering Named After O.O. Galkin of the National

Academy of Sciences of Ukraine

Short description:

The HUNTER project will develop revolutionary power devices that convert humidity into

electrical charge (hygroelectricity), thereby contributing to the European technology and

creativity through joint R&D and R&I multisectorial and international cooperation activities

supported by knowledge sharing. The devices will harvest electricity from atmospheric

humidity and supply a current, such as solar cells capture sunlight and generate electrical

power. The successful realization of the project is assured by implementing a coordinated

network of knowledge sharing in materials science, physics and chemistry; by solidifying the

state-of-the-art understanding in nanoelectronics and by applying bottom-up

nanoengineering approaches via an international and inter-sector collaboration of highly

qualified researchers from Portugal, France, Finland, Ukraine, Belarus and USA. Both

technological (nanoelectronic device fabrication) and fundamental (charge transport

mechanisms) issues will be assessed by this multidisciplinary consortium.

The successful realization of this project will lead to scientifically substantiated principles for

the development of a new generation of functional materials and, consequently, to the

creation of advanced nanoelectronic devices.

Within the HUNTER project, the consortium will implement research/innovation activities by

means of functional secondments and organizing training courses, workshops and summer

schools aimed at sharing knowledge, acquiring new skills and developing the careers of the

consortium members. Sharing the culture of research and innovation, the HUNTER project

will allow applying recent advancements in nanotechnology and materials science to the

realization of the creative idea of Nikola Tesla (1932) of “capturing electricity from the air”.

This vision will be performed in practice by innovative “humidity-to-electricity” devices,

which will enhance the range of known renewable energy sources by a new atmospheric

humidity source.

uP_running – Take-off for sustainable supply of woody biomass from agrarian pruning and plantation removal

Call ID: H2020-LCE-2015-3

EC contribution: € 1,992,920.00

Ukrainian partner(s) involved:

Association Ukrainian Agribusiness Club

Short description:

uP_running project aims to set the path for the development of the bioenergy utilisation of

agrarian pruning and plantation removal (APPR) wood obtained from vineyards, olive groves

and fruit tree plantations. uP_running vocation is the abatement of the current immobilism

of the value chain actors for the utilization of APPR woody biomass. For that purpose

uP_running incorporates a set of straight actions aimed to reshape the sectors perception,

to provide evidences of real success and replicable models to follow, as well as to promote

the take-off for the utilisation of APPR biomass residues. An intense communication

campaign will address the varied target audience with tailored messages and materials to

raise the awareness. An impact on policy barriers and on the legal framework currently

setting limits for the utilisation of APPR wood will be carried out through direct advocacy

and lobbying work at national and EU level. Once the awareness is raised and the sector is

released of hindering barriers, a snowball effect will be triggered through multiplicative and

dissemination actions. First part of uP_running multiplicative strategy is to create a

permanent capacity in Europe, by empowering national and regional agrarian associations,

extension services and/or private consultants with capacities to give support for decision

making to farmers, cooperatives and agro-industries owing the APPR residues. A call for

entrepreneurship will put into operation the newly created capacities in 7 EU countries to

promote the decision making of pioneer entrepreneurs. Setting up and running new APPR

biomass value chains is the key for a self-replication and to further contribute to the

development of the bio-economy in Europe. The actions will be initiated in a set of 4 “demo”

countries (that together account for 50% of EU potential), replicated in 3 relevant EU

countries, and extended through precursor actions to 7 additional EU countries.

Ukrainian partner(s) involved:

Naukovo-Tehnichnii Centar Biomasa LLC

Short description:

Sustainable bioenergy production and use in the EU should be further developed in order to

support Member States (MS) achieving 20-20-20 targets and foster rural development as set

out in EIP AGRI. FORBIO will demonstrate the viability of using land in MSs for non-food

bioenergy feedstock production without interfering with the production of food or feed, nor

with land currently used for recreational and/or conservational purposes. Competition with

other uses of the land is only one component of the sustainability of bioenergy and a

number of cross-cutting environmental, social and economic aspects may present challenges

to the extended deployment of these value chains, while assuring that biofuel sustainability

standards are met. FORBIO will develop a methodology to assess bioenergy production

potential on available “underutilised lands” in Europe (contaminated, abandoned, fallow

land, etc.) at national and local level. In addition, in this context the project will provide

multiple feasibility studies in selected case study locations in three countries that that aim to

set the basis for building up local bioenergy value chains that meet the highest sustainability

standards and improve efficiency and sustainability of those already available in the case

study sites through the provision of roadmaps for bioenergy development.

SEEMLA – Sustainable exploitation of biomass for bioenergy from marginal lands in Europe

Call ID: H2020-LCE-2015-3

EC contribution: € 1,629,883.75

Ukrainian partner(s) involved:

Institute of Bioenergy Crops and Sugar Beet National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of

Ukraine;

Limited Liability Company Salix Energy

Short description:

The aim of the SEEMLA project is the reliable and sustainable exploitation of biomass from

marginal lands (MagL), which are used neither for food nor feed production and are not

posing an environmental threat. The main target groups are regional authorities and public

or private owners of MagLs, who can provide knowledge on land availability and are

responsible for managing these. Furthermore foresters, farmers and the civil society affected

by transformation of MagL into energy crop plantations are important cooperation partners

for the project’s success. The initial challenge of the project is to define MagL. In order to

achieve high yields on the MagL the goal is to develop and optimize cropping systems for

special sites. The project focuses both on existing plantations of energy crops on MagL and

on the establishment of new plantations on MagLs. General guidelines and manuals shall

attract and help relevant stakeholders as well as piloting shall prove the feasibility of

SEEMLA results. The first scenario will enable the assessment of good practice and the

refinement of current practices, making them more sustainable (environmental, economic,

social). The second approach will transfer good practices to underused MagL. The project

will focus on three main objectives: the promotion of re-conversion of MagLs for the

production of bioenergy through the direct involvement of farmers and foresters, the

strengthening of local small scale supply chains and the promotion of plantations of

bioenergy plants on MagLs. Moreover the expected impacts are: Increasing the production

of bioenergy, farmers’ incomes, investments in new technologies and the design of new

policy measures. The project team is balanced between scientific and technical partners as

well as national and regional organisations. By including partners from South-East, Eastern

and Central Europe the knowledge transfer between regions of different climatic and

political backgrounds can be established.

EUNPACK – Good intentions, mixed results – A conflict sensitive unpacking of the EU comprehensive approach to conflict and crisis mechanisms

Call ID: H2020-INT-SOCIETY-2015

EC contribution: € 2,495,674.00

Ukrainian partner(s) involved:

National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy

Short description:

EUNPACK has been designed and developed to critically examine whether EU external crisis

response is sensitive to the political and social context on the ground. In order to achieve

this the project takes a holistic approach that covers the whole crisis cycle, the full EU

toolbox, and the EU’s ability to respond to crises in different types of regions (e.g.

Enlargement Area, ENP Area and Extended neighbourhood). This allows us to provide

analyses of the EU's comprehensive approach - the method of choice in external action - and

how it is implemented in the field; to undertake a comparative analysis of the Union’s

approach to crisis in different regional contexts; and thereby identify lessons learnt to

suggest how EU crisis management institutions and policies can be improved.

EU-STRAT – EU-STRAT - The EU and Eastern Partnership Countries: An Inside-Out Analysis and Strategic Assessment

Call ID: H2020-INT-SOCIETY-2015

EC contribution: € 2,292,221.75

Ukrainian partner(s) involved:

Ukrainian Institute for Public Policy Civic Organization

Short description:

EU-STRAT is an international research project that studies the relationship between the

European Union and the countries in the European Eastern neighbourhood. The project

started on 1 May 2016 and will continue until the end of April 2019. The main ambition of

EU-STRAT is to provide an inside-out analysis and strategic assessment of the links between

the EU and Eastern Partnership countries. EU-STRAT will address two main questions: First,

why has the EU fallen short of creating peace, prosperity and stability in its Eastern

neighbourhood? And second, what can be done to strengthen the EU’s transformative

power in supporting political and economic change in the six Eastern Partnership (EaP)

countries?

Adopting an inside-out perspective on the challenges of transformation the EaP countries

and the EU face, EU-STRAT will:

Develop a conceptual framework for the varieties of social orders in EaP countries to

explain the propensity of domestic actors to engage in change;

Investigate how bilateral, regional and global interdependencies shape the scope of

action and the preferences of domestic actors in the EaP countries;

De-centre the EU by studying the role of selected member states and other external

actors active in the region;

Evaluate the effectiveness of the Association Agreements and alternative EU

instruments, including scientific cooperation, in supporting change in the EaP

countries;

Analyse normative discourses used by the EU and Russia to enhance their influence

over the shared neighbourhood;

Formulate policy recommendations to strengthen the EU’s capacity to support

change in the EaP countries by advancing different scenarios for developmental

pathways.

EQUAL-IST – Gender Equality Plans for Information Sciences and Technology Research Institutions

Call ID: H2020-GERI-2015-1

EC contribution: € 1,857,217.50

Ukrainian partner(s) involved:

Simon Kuznets Kharkiv National University of Economics

Short description:

The EQUAL-IST project (Gender Equality Plans for Information Sciences and Technology

Research Institutions) aims at introducing structural changes to enhance gender equality in

Information Sciences and Technology (IST) research institutions. It has been demonstrated

that IST is among the research sectors most affected by gender inequalities at all levels. The

project aims to address ERA objectives in relation to gender equality by supporting seven

Research Performing Organisations (RPOs) from Northern, Southern and Central European

countries, as well as one CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) country in developing

and implementing tailored Gender Equality Plans (GEPs). All RPOs forming the EQUAL-IST

project consortium are at a starting stage in setting up of GEPs and they have also ensured

the support in GEPs implementation from the respective highest management levels.

The project combines gender mainstreaming and positive actions on three main levels:

HR practices and management processes,

Student services and institutional communication,

Research design and delivery.

For addressing and solving issues of horizontal and vertical segregation in research and

administrative careers, work-life balance, gender imbalance in student enrolment, and

gender neutral/blind approach to IST research, the EQUAL-IST project is aimed at influencing

organizational structures, discourses, and behaviours.

In addition, the EQUAL-IST project will promote a participatory approach towards creation of

gender equality policies, ensuring at the same time the active dialogue with and involvement

of decision makers at the participating RPOs. By setting up a dedicated crowdsourcing online

collaborative platform, the project will support both RPOs’ initial internal assessment and

the GEPs design process. The toolkits, guidelines, and methodologies developed during the

EQUAL-IST project, as well as lessons learned, will be disseminated in Europe and other CIS

countries.

EUWaste – Ecological Utilization of Waste

Call ID: H2020-SMEINST-1-2015

EC contribution: € 50,000.00

Ukrainian partner(s) involved:

Firma Instytut Ecologii Liudyny-Ineko

Short description:

On average one person in Europe uses 16 tonnes of material per year, of which 6 tonnes

become waste. In 2010, total waste production in the EU amounted to 2,5 billion tons. From

this total only a limited (albeit increasing) share (36%) was recycled, with the rest was

landfilled or burned, of which some 600 million tons could be recycled or reused. From total

amount 100 million tonnes is hazardous, containing heavy metals and other toxins. These

substances make the waste particularly difficult to treat, as special processes are needed to

deal with the hazardous components.

Our Firm “Institute of Human Ecology-INEKO” (INEKO) developed an innovative solution that

offers elegant and cost effective solution to utilization problem of hazardous waste, such as

hazardous health care waste, oil-contaminated waste, pesticides, solid and liquid waste and

sludge containing hazardous substances, and other kinds of waste (agricultural waste,

unsorted municipal solid waste, etc.) EUWaste uses technology of gasification that allows

utilizing waste of different type with a minimum environmental footprint and emission.

Moreover, the use of gasification technology allows obtaining synthetic gas during the

gasification process, which in turn can be used as a source of alternative energy for heat

production. By using EUWaste, waste producers (e.g. health care facilities, pharmaceutical

companies, petrochemical factories, etc.) and waste utilizers can improve their waste

management and help to reduce health and environmental problems, reduce greenhouse

gas emissions and avoid negative impacts at local level such as landscape deterioration due

to landfilling, local water and air pollution, as well as littering.

The objective of the EUWaste project is to conduct a feasibility study, which includes market

analysis, production scale-up and business model and sales strategy development), first

focusing on the medical waste utilization and further on other potential segments of waste

management.
