Food Offering With the bushfires surrounding us, and the drought, we are anticipating a greater demand for welfare assistance. To help in this regard you are asked to bring a non-perishable food item with you each Sunday to place in the Food Trolley in the church which will be brought forward as part of our Sunday offerings. Please check use by dates to ensure the products can be stored for some time. Suggestions include: tea, coffee, long life milk, canned goods, spreads, toiletry items, etc.

FILM NIGHT—We would like to report that $172.80 was raised from our second movie night on 17 Jan for the bushfire appeal.

WITH LOVE TO THE WORLD—The Lent and Easter copy is now available from the office. $5.00 per copy, $20.00 if paying yearly (due now).

NOMINATIONS—We are seeking nominations for additional Church Council members and Elders. Please find nomination forms at the back of the church. Nominations close today. Please hand nomination forms to Rev Rob or Barry Perry. Voting will be taking place on 2 February (at Lismore & Jarman). There will be a commissioning service for all church leaders on 9 February at Lismore Church.

OTHER WORSHIP TASKS—We are also seeking more people to help with Steward tasks as well as Morning Tea. Please consider how you might be able to contribute to the friendly atmosphere of worship by taking on one of these roles.

BUSHFIRE APPEAL—If you would like to donate money to the Bushfire Relief Fund, please put your donation in the specially marked envelope in the worship centre and place it in the offering plate on Sunday. Alternatively, envelopes are available at the Church office during the week. 100% of the money given, is used to assist affected families under the guidance of UC Chaplains. Thank you.

Isaiah 9: 1-4

Revd Dr Clive Pearson wrote this commentary while doing a locum in

Scotland.

Here on the west coast of Scotland the light shines long in

midsummer. The sunsets are a brilliant interplay of reds and

golds, shimmering across the silvery, turquoise waters,

sometimes reflecting the greys of various hues in the clouds.

Soon it will be dark, though not for long. There will be no clarity,

no shade and shadow, no nuance apart from a handful of

glittering lights across the water. Darkness and light. The

transition for the prophet is sharp: the time of anguish, gloom,

contempt, and “deep darkness” surrenders to the joy of a

“great light” - for the people are to be released from their

oppressors. Such a movement from darkness to light can seem

sudden, abrupt. Being released from that which oppresses

throws what has been endured into stark relief. It is possible

also to look back now and discern a scene with more shades

of meaning: perhaps there was a greater range of

companions than was visible while clothed in the dark and

the twilight that precedes.

Response to Scripture: May I live in the light of God’s reign.

God of light, I long for your presence. Help me see you in

darker times.
