November 2017 21 If I’m in a situation where I can’t walk away—like while riding the bus—I will ask them to shut their phone off. If they won’t shut it off, I will look away and say a prayer. I will ask Heavenly Father to help me get the images out of my head and to not think of them anymore. I will tell my parents as soon as possible. Kelton S., age 9, Nevada, USA Quickly cover the phone and tell them what they’re looking at is bad. Help them turn it off. If they don’t want to turn it off, then get up and leave. Mark A., age 10, Utah, USA I would close my eyes and turn my head away. If they still tried to show me the pictures, I would walk away. If they still tried to show me the pictures, I would tell an adult. Aslynn D., age 9, Alberta, Canada I would cover the pictures and say, “No, thank you. I don’t look at those kinds of pictures. Let’s talk about something else, please.” I would be friendly but firm. Seneca M., age 10, Ohio, USA I would tell them our bodies are a gift from God and that we should respect them. Samuel B., age 7, Texas, USA I can tell them not to look at those kinds of pictures because it tricks your brain into thinking that love is some- thing you feel for pictures. Quinten B., age 7, Utah, USA Walk away and tell my parents. Brynlee S., age 7, Nevada, USA WHAT ARE YOUR QUESTIONS? Next year the Friend wants to answer your questions about the gospel, growing up, or getting a testimony. Email us at [email protected] and put “I Have a Question” in the subject line. Don’t forget to include the permission statement on page 39. We’re excited to hear from you! Read more answers at FriendQC.lds.org. My friends sometimes use their phones to look at bad pictures. What should I do? Responses are intended for help and perspective, not as pronouncements of Church doctrine. ILLUSTRATION BY DAVID MALAN

The Holiday season is almost upon us and we’re gearing up for a busy month before winter break. We encourage you to continue to read with your child to keep their fluency and comprehension skills fresh in their minds. At our next Coffee with Principal on December 13th (8:30 in the MPR), we’ll be sharing how to access our school’s digital library so that you can check out books to your device at home. Our 2nd-5th graders will be taking their next round of iReady reading and math diagnostics when we return in January. The computer based assessments give our teachers great data to help inform their instruction on student growth and what their needs are moving forward. To learn more about these assessments and how you can help

The Story Starts Here |

Library Books Due Before BreakWe would like all library books to be turned in before Winter Break. Students with lost or damaged book fines will be emailed with fine information. Please teach your kids to be responsible with the library books they check out. This means taking care of them by keeping them clean, safe and in good condition.

Spend Some Unplugged Time with Your Kids Over BreakDo your kids spend too much time on their devices and not enough time playing and doing things that you used to do when you were a kid? Make time to play with your kids or show them some non-digital things they can do on their own over winter break. What Do We Do All Day? is a great resource for parents who are looking for ideas to help make their kids intelligent, curious, creative and independent thinkers. This site is full of ideas for when you want activities to do with your kids, or when you want them to play by themselves. See the Giant List of Indoor Activities for Kids here, or view categories such as arts and crafts, science, playful activities, or literacy and writing. They also have some recommendations for games and books, perfect for gift-giving ideas this holiday season.

Check out eBooks Over Winter BreakIf you don’t yet know about OverDrive, it’s our school district’s ebook system. Students may check out eBooks to read on computers and other devices. This is a great resource for students to utilize over the winter break. (And, don’t forget about making a visit to the local libraries as well!) Information on how to access OverDrive is posted in the shortcuts section on our school’s homepage or click here. Learn how to access Overdrive at the Coffee with the Principal on 12/13 @ 8:30am in the MPR

Enchanted Forest Book FairDecember started with a transformation of the library into the much-awaited book fair. The PTA runs two book fairs each year, once in the fall/winter and one in the spring. These book fairs give kids an opportunity to see hundreds of new book titles and new releases of their favorite series. Proceeds from the winter book fair directly benefit the teachers, who will be able to choose books to add to their classroom libraries and support classroom learning. Thank you to our PTA volunteers who make the book fair such a fun event for the students, and to everyone who shops for books!

In December Mails will be focused on the importance of appreciating our FAMILY. With the holidays approaching, it is important for students to embrace the importance of spending time together, traditions and making memories together as the greatest gift of all! Kindness Crew will be facilitating making memories with our school family while having a team obstacle course challenge during lunch. Another fun activity that was enjoyed was our Lawnchair Lunch experience, where students picnicked in the quad area on blankets with their school family, creating a unique memory they will treasure forever! If you enjoy Holiday light viewing, take your family on an evening of fun festive lights Holiday Lights Map
