STEAM Night Family FunOne of our big school events is STEAM Night, which took place on Pi Day, March 14. This family event is full of great learning activities in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math. Our third graders kicked off the night with a performance and our color guard made an appearance at 6pm. Thank you to all those who came to have fun and learn, and to the staff who made this night a success!
Recycle Rally Kick-off – Students learn about a new initiative to recycle common packaging products to help the environment. See Ms. Spoon’s Counseling Corner for more info
LOST AND FOUNDOur lost and found bins are located in the area as you enter the campus on the outside of the double doors. There are dozens and dozens of jackets, lunch pails, water bottles and other items in the lost and found. Smaller items like jewelry, glasses, watches and headbands are kept at the front desk. Clothing items are donated at the end of the school year.
Spring Assessments AreIn Full Swing!
Students in grades 3-5 are currently taking the CAASPP English Language Arts and Math Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium and Performance Tasks. Fifth graders will also be taking science tests. These assessments are important because they show student progress throughout the year. Please do your part by making sure your kids get the proper sleep and nutrition they need and also emphasize a growth mindset so they can focus on just trying their best!

Lisa J. Mails Color GuardOur color guard had a pretty amazing weekend in March at the Vista Murrieta HS Winter Guard competition. Our LJM Monarch Diamond Guard competes in a Junior High division, and this year they were moved up to the second highest division, JHA, because they are THAT good! Our color guard competed in their first official competition of the season in February and took home first place. Congratulations to the team and their hard-working coaches, Lexie Blood and Nicole Venegas.
Did You Know?In order for students to be able to use medication at school, we must receive a physician’s order detailing the method, amount and the time scheduled for that medication to be taken; as well as written consent from the parent/guardian of that student. These medications are to be kept in the Health Office (with the exception of select emergency medications). Please note: “A medication may include not only a substance dispensed in the United States by prescription, but also a substance that does not require a prescription, such as over the counter (OTC) remedies, nutritional substances and herbal remedies (5 CCR 601).” Click here for complete info
2019 R-Word CampaignIn March, Lisa J Mails participated in the R-Word Campaign. Students had the opportunity to make a pledge to show support for inclusion and acceptance.
The Spread the Word to End the Word movement was established in 2009 during the Special Olympics Global Youth Activation Summit. The movement was created by youth with and without intellectual disabilities. On March 31, 2009 the campaign celebrated the 1st Annual Spread the Word to End the Word National Awareness Day. Across the country, students of all ages made a pledge to eliminate the r-word from their vocabulary and encourage others to do the same.
This year, Spread the Word to End the Word does not just focus on the elimination of a word but on the creation of a new reality: inclusion for all people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This year the campaign is encouraging everyone to, "Be a teammate. Be a friend. Welcome someone who has been left out. Sit next to someone alone at lunch. Say hello to someone in the hallway."

Yearbook Distribution Our yearbook is finished and is being printed. They
will be distributed the last week of school. Like last
year, we will call students by their class to the
library to come and pick up their yearbooks.
Mrs. Wallace’s Library Newsletter May 2019
Fun With Poetry – Kids are choosing poems to put in their pockets. We had a busy month in April, as we celebrated National Poetry Month. We always celebrate this literary genre with poetry readings and Poem in My Pocket Day, which was on April 18.
Cat in the Hat Visits Students – We welcomed the Cat in the Hat to our school on Friday, March 1 to celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday and read stories to the students.
Letter writing fun – After reading a book about writing thank you letters, first graders sat down to write their own thank you’s. We also had our first Letter Writing Social which was a lot of fun.
Do This Over the SummerSummer is days away and that means you need to come up with ideas to keep your kids minds and hands busy. I encourage everyone to spend time making things and doing things with your hands. Through the many projects I have done in the library, I have noticed that many of the things that kids used to do “back in the day” are being sadly tossed to the wayside as technology takes over. Because kids are not getting out arts and craft supplies to make things, they are losing their fine motor skills and have a hard time cutting with scissors, folding paper neatly and when given instructions, they give up too soon. Think back to when you were a kid and introduce some of the games and activities you used to do to your kids. This will help them get exposed to new ideas, which only helps grow their brains. Go to the public library and check out books to read. Learn about geocaching and go out and explore new places. Go on hikes. Go to the beach and look for treasure (sea glass, seashells) or visit a tide pool at low tide. Go bike riding. Write a few letters. Teach your kids something new. Have fun seeing how many new things you and your kids can learn and do together!
In March our Kindness Crew Leaders will be spreading the message
to our Monarch family about the importance of “Being First.” First to
help, first to offer friendship, first to make a new friend, first to give a
compliment, etc… and following up in April with reflecting on “Self-
Improvement.” We can choose each day to be better than the day
before. Kindness Crew will be facilitating making memories with our
school family while having a team obstacle course challenge during
lunch. Another fun activity that our Kindness Crew is creating is an
around the world of fun activities on the playground. This will be a
time to learn a new game from another country with our Kindness
Crew Leaders. May we will be focused on “Safety,” online, with
friends, at school, at home, and in the community.

Camp Good Grief is a 3-day camp experience for
children and teens 10 to 16 years old who have
had a sibling or parent die. It provides the place
and space for children and teens to come
together in an atmosphere of love and
acceptance.
Camp Good Grief Information
Three weekends each summer, OUR HOUSE
Grief Support Center hosts Camp Erin Los
Angeles and Camp Erin Orange County. The
weekend-long camp provides children ages 6-17
an opportunity to learn coping skills, enjoy
traditional summer camp activities, and connect
with other children who are also grieving the
death of someone close.
Camp Erin Grief Camp Information
Our summer bereavement camp will now be
called Camp Spero! Based on the Latin phrase,
Dum Spiro Spero, “While I breathe, I hope.”
Over a weekend, Camp Spero campers will
honor and memorialize their loved one, learn
coping skills and make friends with other kids
who are facing similar challenges.
