Fall 2012 Comedy

the servant of two mastersBy Carlo Goldoni | Adapted by Jeffrey Hatcher and Paolo Emilio LandiDirected by Robyn Berg

a cross between traditional Italian commedia and postmodern vaudeville, this new version of Goldoni’s classic pits the madcap servant Truffaldino against masters, mistresses, lovers, lawyers, and food galore! Imagine a Bob Hope or Woody allen comedy written by Monty Python and performed with the physical bravura of Chaplin or Keaton.

“a circus of styles tumbling backwards, forwards and sideways… full of ancient, hooting laughs zapped together with up-your-alley anachronisms. Broad, bold, whacked-out and wild! a tour-de-farce! Unforgettable, undiminished delight!” – Milwaukee Weekly

This play is suitable for all audiences.

Homecoming Musical

the pajama GameBook by George Abbott and Richard Bissell | Music and Lyrics by Richard Adler and Jerry RossBased on the novel 7 1/2 Cents by Richard Bissell | Directed by Beki Baker | Choreographed by Justin Boccitto

The dangers of a workplace romance are explored to hysterical effect in this romantic comedy (from the creators of Damn Yankees). Conditions at the Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory are anything but peaceful as sparks fly between new superintendent Sid Sorokin and Babe Williams, leader of the union grievance committee. Their stormy relationship comes to a head when the workers strike for a 7-and-a-half cent pay increase, setting off not only a conflict between management and labor, but a battle of the sexes as well.Bright and brassy, this unconventional, fast-paced Broadway favorite is every bit the embodiment of legendary director George abbott at his very best. The energetic score by Richard adler and Jerry Ross includes popular musical theatre standards “Hey There,” “Steam Heat” and “Hernando’s Hideaway”. and who doesn’t love the Bob Fosse-inspired dance numbers? For solid, classic musical comedy, it’s hard to beat The Pajama Game!Tony award Winner for Best Musical and Best Choreography in 1954 and Best Revival of a Musical in 2006This play is suitable for all audiences.

James and the Giant peachFrom the book by Roald Dahl | Dramatized by Richard R. GeorgeDirected by Deb Holloway | Choreographed by Peter Fields

a magical peach! an imprisoned boy! Insect friends! an incredible journey! This amazing adventure of James Henry Trotter will fulfill the fantasy of anyone who has ever dreamed of escape. Roald Dahl’s story comes hilariously to life in this delightful dramatization that reveals the wickedness of some, the goodness of others, and the indecision encountered by many when they are faced with crises. You will see James (as he cleverly gets the Peach out of danger), the wise old-Green-Grasshopper, and the pessimistic earthworm. You will also see James’ mean aunt Spiker and cruel aunt Sponge come to a suitably sticky end.

“James and the Giant Peach is a magical journey shared by all.” – John Tilford, Champaign Park District, Champaign, Ill.

This play is suitable for all audiences.

Joint Production with The Nashville Shakespeare Festival

twelfth nightBy William Shakespeare | Directed by Denise Hicks (Artistic Director, Nashville Shakespeare Festival)

The Lipscomb University Theatre Department is proud to announce a joint production of Twelfth Night with The nashville Shakespeare Festival. artistic Director Denice Hicks will direct a varied cast of Shakespeare Festival regulars and Lipscomb University students in what is sure to be a wildly entertaining night of theatre.

In one of the greatest comedies ever written, Shakespeare delivers a night of deep, satisfying laughter. all the key ingredients are here – romance, mistaken identities, women falling in love with men who turn out to be women – and it’s made all the more tantalizing by the rich characters. From the exquisitely courageous Viola to the beautiful and bereaved olivia to the insufferable Malvolio, everyone is dealing with a sort of crisis. Twelfth Night is both achingly funny and profoundly beautiful – an absolute must-see.

This play is suitable for all audiences.

Blackbird is thrilled to be presenting the Nashville premiere production of Red, winner of six Tony Awards in 2009 including Best Play. Written by top screenwriter John Logan, Red delves unflinchingly into the work and ideas of famed artist Mark Rothko as he struggles to complete one of the most lucrative and notori-ous commissions in the history of modern art. “We love stories that explore the process of creation,” says Blackbird’s Managing Director Greg Greene, “and this show is one of the best about the power of great art and the pain in producing it.” Red will be directed by Mike Fernan-dez, chair of the Lipscomb Depart-ment of Theatre.

Blackbird’s second show will be Peter Shaffer’s masterwork Ama-deus, a Tony winner as well, and source for the Oscar-winning film. Amadeus takes a trenchant look at the troubled life, brilliant music, and tragic death of Mozart through the envious eyes of Salieri, the rival who claimed to have killed the great composer. “Shaffer is one of my favorite playwrights,” says Wes Driver, Artistic Director of Blackbird Theater and director of this produc-tion. “His unique theatrical imagina-tion was never more fully realized than in this funny, ferocious, tour-de-force of a show. It’s truly a modern masterpiece.”
