Message from the Head of School Significant work has been completed to further refine and develop learning that takes place in the area of Service at BSM. We are working hard to develop the right partnerships and to ensure that the commitment and contributions of our students to service are on-going, spanning large parts of the year. Last weekend, a number of families, students and staff took part in a Year 10 ‗Family Community Service Day‘. They visited Gawad Kalinga in Taguig City, one of our many service partners, where they helped build a wall and repair a laundry area where drains, that had been broken by the recent flooding, were overflowing . This work involved three hours of pouring and skimming concrete, laying bricks and humping bags of sand and cement. Hard work, but very enjoyable and rewarding. On Wednesday, Year 7AQ had a terrific time visiting their service partner for this year, Kids International in Cainta. All remaining Year 7, 8 and 9 forms will visit their service partners over the next month to kick-start their community service activities and enable them to be involved in the process of deciding how they can best make a difference over the coming year. As our service programme continues to evolve, it is wonderful to see all of our community being involved. Pick up and drop off Thank you to our families and drivers for helping support the 15 second rule for drop off and pick up of students this week. Traffic flow through school seems to be improving. Also, I was pleased to see the congestion we suffered last Thursday diminished considerably this week with students arriving for school a little later, and that the car park congestion was minimal. Primary School News Year 6 assembly First, we must thank our Year 6 children for their very informative assembly this morning where they taught us about the brain and how we learn best. They delivered what they had learnt in a fun and clear manner and I‘m sure everyone present learnt something. Part of what they talked about and showed us was neurons and their connections and how these work. This is a topic that I have used as part of talks I have done in the past and will recount some fascinating facts here. I used an analogy to help. There are as many trees in the Amazon rain forest as there are neurons in the brain. The Amazon rain forest stretches for 2,700,000 square miles and has a hundred billion trees! To continue in this vein, if we now consider the huge number of connections between neurons, then we could say that there are about as many as leaves on the trees in the Amazon jungle. That‘s a lot! As part of the assembly, Year 6 also used the ―5 a day‖ programme they and lots of other year groups have been accessing, to give the children exercise as part of the day to get the heart rate going and increase alertness. Exercise is good for all us and clearly an active life is highly beneficial, not just for the body, but for learning as well. RIFA football Whilst on healthy living we have a large number of boys and girls heading out this weekend with shin pads and football boots on representing the school in the RIFA football tournaments across Manila. It is wonderful to see so many children playing the beautiful game and I really hope they have fun in BSM blue. We have expanded our programme this year and have entered 2 teams into a number of leagues with A and B squads, to give as many children as possible the chance to play for the school in competitive matches, which is wonderful and a great opportunity. We wish all of our teams the best of luck in their games but as I said, hopefully they all enjoy the experience which will lead them to continue to play sport for the rest of their active lives.

Primary Parent workshops We will be running a number of workshops for parents this term, with our first being next week focussing on maths. On the 18 September we will be running a parent session for those who have children in EYFS and KS 1 and the following day a session for KS 2 parents. These will be informative but also quite hands on sessions and you have an opportunity to have a go at some of the challenges we set your children. Empathy, problem solving and trying things out is after all the best way to understand and learn. The first session will be for EYFS/KS 1 at 8am - 9am in the Cluster Fiesta canteen. The second session will be for KS 2 on 19 September and will begin at 8.15am due to our later start on Thursdays. On the following day we also have a Phonics information session that will run after the Year 5 assembly beginning at 8.30am for 2 hours.

Further sessions for this half term will focus on phonics and reading, with two external speakers for these. For the second half term we will follow up with sessions on blogs, data and target setting, one on supporting your child, and a final one on writing. We will also offer an evening session for working parents to cover all the salient points that we have delivered in the morning sessions. Dates and details on all of these will be confirmed shortly. Have a great weekend.

Dear BSM Parents, In the next few weeks you will receive information regarding the opportunities being offered in the Senior School for Activities Week. Activities Week for students in Years 7-10 will take place from 12-16 May 2014; in some cases activities offered may extend into the weekends either side of these dates. Over the last few weeks the Senior Leadership Team has been evaluating our aims and objectives for Activities Week, taking on board feedback from teachers, students and parents. We have been looking at the elements of this week that already work really well; along with areas we need to develop, in order to enhance our curriculum provision at BSM. Development of the different ‗Learning Power Skills‘ has underpinned our discussions. As a result of this we have agreed the following principles for Activities Week in May 2014:

All Activities Week trips will have at least a one or two night residential element.

Activities will have outdoor learning and environmental awareness elements.

Activities will have an outward bound and / or physical challenge element. This will allow students to step out of their ‗comfort zone‘ and develop their ‗risk taking‘ skills.

Students will be asked to select an activity they have not already participated in during their time in the Senior School at BSM. For example, if your child has already participated in a diving trip during a BSM Activities Week, then we ask you to select a different type of activity this year. This will give students a progressive range of experiences and will help provide them with new challenges and opportunities each year.

Activities week should be a fun and enjoyable experience offering your child the chance to work with students in different tutor groups and year groups.

Year groups transitioning to a new Key Stage (Years 6, 9 and 11) will take part in a year group residential, where sessions will be included to prepare them for the next stage of their educational journey.

Although Activities Week takes place in Term 3, we want to begin the process of trip organisation early to allow you time to plan your finances carefully as there will be a cost implication for all the activities offered. We are working carefully to ensure that activities offered suit a range of budgets from lower cost local trips with a 1 or 2 night residential element, to slightly more expensive overseas trips. The final range of trips being offered, along with the Year 9 residential trip arrangements are currently being finalised and will be sent out to you in the next few weeks. We ask for your support as we develop and improve our provision for your children in this area of the curriculum. Next week is Week A.

Head Lice in Children

In the following weeks we will start conducting the head lice checks in KS1 & KS2 in their classrooms.

The louse is a flat, wingless parasitic insect. These pinhead-size blood sucking parasites are most common among school children, as they tend to share combs, hats and other hair accessories. A female louse lay about six eggs (nits) each day, which is firmly attached to the hair shafts. The nits hatch in 8-10 days, and reach maturity in about two weeks before the cycle starts again. In its life-time, a single female lays some 50-100 nits. Unlike body lice which thrive when the host does not bathe regularly, head lice are equal opportunity parasites, they do not respect socio economic class distinction. Their presence does not con-note a lack of hygiene or sanitation practice by the host. Head lice are mainly acquired by direct head to head contact. It may also be transferred from the sharing of brushes, combs, hair accessories, hats, pillows and towels. Head lice can remain on bedding and upholstered furniture for a brief period.

Symptoms: Intense itch on the scalp and neck is caused by certain substances in the saliva of lice. A child with lice is seen constantly scratching his head. Red bite marks on the scalp and neck, which are often visible behind the ears. A very small, shiny white speck (nits) that looks like dandruff is seen on the hair. Unlike dandruff which can be shaken off easily, the nits cling firmly to the strands. Swollen lymph nodes can be felt behind the ears in severe cases of lice infestation.

What you can do? Lice can be removed by using medicated lice shampoo or lotion. Check if other family members are infested, they should be treated at the same time. Soak all brushes, combs and hair accessories in lice shampoo solution for several hours, and then wash them thoroughly. Wash all bed linens, towels, caps etc. thoroughly in hot water. When drying them, set the dryer on the hot cycle. Vacuum all mattresses, carpets, rugs, car seats and upholstered items of furniture. Consult doctors if there is bacterial infection due to open wound from constant scratching.

INTERNATIONAL OUTLOOK

2-6 September 2013

This week in the world:

2 September

Canada and the United States: Labour Day

Vietnam: Independence Day

5 September

Argentina, Australia, Canada, UK, US, Israel: Rosh Hashana (New Year)

What do you think will happen next?

Should the international community become involved in the Syrian conflict?

Most recently: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/08/31/obama-syria-announcement_n_3849108.html

in Focus: The Syrian Crisis

The Syrian civil war began in March 2011, and was part of the wider Middle Eastern protest movement, which is also known as the Arab Spring. The conflict in Syria is between forces loyal to the Ba’ath government and those who oppose it. Protestors wish to end the reign of the current President - Bashar Al-Assad, whose family has been in power since the 1970’s.

What were initially only protests, have now unfortunately become armed rebellion. According to the United Nations, as of June 2013, the death toll has surpassed 100,000. On the 21st August, chemical weapons struck the Eastern Ghouta region, causing an estimated death toll of 1,300. In the words of the US president Obama, ‘The world watched in horror as men, women and children were massacred in Syria in the worst chemical attack of the 21st century.’ As a result, Barack Obama wants to take military action against regime targets, and has now followed in David Cameron’s (the Prime minister of the UK) footsteps by seeking authorization from congress before he proceeds.
