Happy New Year

Every year our club celebrates Australia Day by hosting a Citizenship Ceremony.

This year we anticipate a total of 28 becoming Australians at Trinder Park Community Hall.

The Lions Club of Rochedale Springwood celebrating 46 years of continuous service to those in the community who are in need of our help.

Trevor’s Comments for January 2018

As in past years all the efforts put in by our members have been exceptional and the results of the Christmas Trailer raffle is a credit to all of those concerned. The combination of the trailer and the sales of cakes and puddings from not only the trailer, but of those business that assisted our club in retailing, has also added to this year’s success.

2018 will bring new challenges to us all and it is to be hoped that there will be less activity so as to not impose too much work and not enough enjoyment to our club members. The BBQs have already been planned and as I am aware there will be twelve such activities during the year, thereby leaving some time for any extra requests or planned BBQs to be able to be completed. A lot of work has gone into securing BBQs, and again for all those concerned I personally say thank you,.

Australia Day is the next big event for our club, and thanks to the organisation of the venue at Trinder Park this year’s event will be held in an air conditioned room, thereby eliminating the suffering of everybody in the heat at the end of January.

Also, in February the Youth of the Year will again be staged. This year we plan to have it at the Logan East Community Centre and for these two events, Australia Day and Youth of the Year we will need assistance from our members.

I would like to remind all members again that a new Board will be necessary for the 2018/2019 year, and I would suggest again that members consider taking on the roles that are required as this is the only way our club can progress.

$13 300 profit raised by raffle & cake sales is brilliant. This wouldn’t have happened without Graham Ramsay’s getting us out of trouble with delivering the trailer and helping at Rosie BBQ, and all those involved in sales and many other events that took place to contribute to total amount raised

Congratulations on the engagement of Harold and Anne.

We need feedback on our dinner meeting oppositions – Board Meeting Agenda item.

Happy New Year to everyone. I hope you all had a great Christmas and let's enjoy the year ahead of us.

Thanking you for the 2017 year and look forward to 2018.

The Christmas Party held on 12 December at Lions Christmas Dinner at Coors room of the American Bourban Bar & Grill at the Gloria Hotel was a great success with all who attended. The food was outstanding; all enjoyed each other's company, with the plus being in a private venue.

Lions Christmas Cakes and Puddings – 50 cartons 1.5kg, 20 cartons 1kg, 20 cartons Puddings. SOLD OUT

The Cakes were stored in the garage at 19 Toufik St Rochedale. Lions David & Lorraine maintained records of cakes distributed.

Our main outlet for Cakes was during Christmas Trailer Raffle Sales however, several members were able to seek out corporate sales as gifts etc. Well done Lion Maree.

CHRISTMAS WRAPPING at ARNDALE

During the week before Christmas, this project was looked after by Lion Lorraine with Maree, Peter, Gayle, Barbara and Chris. An excellent Public Relations Activity.

PUBLIC RELATIONS:

We are most fortunate in having a well maintained Web site which informs the public Who we are, Where we are, How to Contact us, What we do. Club Members are encouraged to visit this site on a regular basis to catch up with the latest news.

A Letter from ROSIES:

To the President, Secretary and members of the Rochdale Springwood Lions Club.

I am writing to you to thank you for the amazing the job that you guys did for us and the marginalised  people on the Street on Friday night 15th December.

As usual you gave us the support that allows us to give a happy Christmas to the needy.  Without you we could not achieve this. We are very grateful for the ongoing support that the Rochdale Springwood Lions have given to Rosies Logan over the past 10 years.

Margaret Harvey, Coordinator, Rosies Youth Mission. Logan City.

Achievers’ Awards- School Graduation & Awards Night

Tuesday night 16th November Lions Lorraine & Greg visited the Kuraby Special School Kuraby Spectacular to present the Award to Liam Amos.

This was followed by a visit to SPRINGWOOD CENTRAL on Wednesday 6 December at 7.00pm to Lilly Seiler .

The students had been nominated by their Teachers. Each student received a Plaque and Certificate and the school receives the perpetual trophy.

Lion Peter Piccone instigated this award back in 2004, because their son Danny had attended Kuraby Special School and they thought it would be a very good idea to acknowledge the efforts these students make to achieve their goals.

Our Annual Letters to Santa Project

.

Tuesday Night 28th November we had our working bee to assist Santa answer the Santa Letters. We had 447 this year and also packed 120 Gift Packs for the Meals on Wheels, the Seniors at Trinder Park Computer Lounge and the Seniors on the Christmas Lights Tour at LECNA. Trevor and Donna kindly let us use their home to do this and our team of workers short work of the Gift Boxes and writing the letters but we got finished in good time and then all got together for drinks and nibblies after a quick Board Meeting and a nice social evening was had by all.

Christmas Breakfast at YURANA:

Saturday morning 2nd December we were up bright and early to cook breakfast for the Seniors at Yurana Retirement Village, an event we have done for the past 10 years, and the seniors look forward to it each year. The Seniors had set up the table with decorations etc and they looked very nice. Breakfast was served at 8.30 and all enjoyed their meal. Our members were able to sit down and enjoy breakfast and enjoy each others’ company. We sold trailer raffle tickets and Lions Christmas Cakes. Another very special day in our Lions Calendar.

Redeemer Lutheran College time capsule

Rochedale Springwood Lions Club has had a long relationship with Redeemer Lutheran College, and in particular PCC David McKenzie has been involved with the college for many years.   Their inaugural Principal, Robin Kleinschmidt has been a judge for lions Youth of the Year project for over 30 years, at club, region and district level, and often mentors other judges.

A time capsule was put down at the college 25 years ago, with Lions clubs involvement, and this was brought out earlier this year, with a number of our members present.   So when the concept of a perpetual time capsule that could be reused was discussed our club jumped at the opportunity to be involved, with PCC David as project chairman, and our club approved the expenditure of $2,300 to pay for the stainless steel above ground capsule.

CHRISTMAS TRAILER RAFFLE & BBQs

The Christmas Trailer Raffle Fund Raiser is now completed.. The draw was done at 2.30pm at The Mall Shopping Centre under independent supervision and the results are now published on our Club Web-site as stated on the ticket. Lion Chris organised the Tombola and the Trailer Registration Transfer Papers and Lion Rodney attended to the Towing. The trailer raffle has been run and won and the trailer delivered to the winner. The details are:

Winning ticket number 1009 which was sold at Underwood Marketplace on the 10 November.

The winners are Warren & Karen Roach of Everton Hills (out of our usual area but they were visiting her sister in a local retirement home at the time) and attached is a photo of them happily accepting delivery on Thursday 21 December.

The financial details are that we sold 5240 tickets sold and all butts were accounted for, for a gross revenue of $10480 and with actual cash costs under $500 (because we had a lot of the contents donated) we will show a profit of some $10 000 We sold over $11,000 in cakes this year for a profit of around $3,300 and also got over $900 in the donations tin.  So total net fundraising over the Christmas period was in excess of $14,300. A great effort from all concerned..

And now that it’s over we all can take that well earned rest. But remember – BBQs at NAPA, Moss St., start again in January...

Lion Trevor Collins- Hero of the Trailers who came to our rescue even though he was still at work –and Lions Partner Graham Ramsay who sorted us out when nobody else was available for towing.

Lion Trevor said, “A lot of people did extra work quietly, for me and the Club, such as Greg who did a few extra shifts; Harold was ready to tow non-stop until he became ill, and started selling again as soon as he was fit enough.

David did a huge job stapling books of tickets in his spare time. David and Lorraine made a lot of trips to collect and deliver money and cakes. Like Greg, Andrew and Barbara did more than their fair share of shifts. Peter Massey was always ready to fill vacant shifts. And Chris did a lot of shifts once he was well enough, as well as collecting tickets and money as required. Because Maree works during the week, she made sure she was on every weekend possible, in addition to marketing cakes in her spare time.

Lion Rodney Reardon – Hero of the BBQ who made sure that our project maintained its momentum. We are now back every month at NAPA during 2018.

The other hero of the Fund Raising projects who were largely responsible for this year’s successful outcomes plus planning for 2018 was Lion Nick Hegerty.

All the work done by Lion Nick with the Christmas Trailer has paid off.

Congratulations are well deserved by ALL who worked at these Fund-Raisers.

Trinder Park Internet Lounge

One of our club’s ongoing projects is the support of an Internet lounge at the Trinder Park Retirement village. The history of the project is that the Apple Mac Lions Club has an arrangement to collect old iMac computers which they send overseas to support communities without these facilities, or after natural disasters, such as the Ahce tsunami. Apple allows existing software to remain so long as the machines are over 5 years old

But it was considered that our own populace living in retirement villages could also use this equipment, so Apple Mac Lions provided three computers, computer desk, chairs, printer and router network, which is connected to the Internet. Our club was approached to provide training and support. Initially this was expected to be a short term requirement. Some eleven years later we are still providing six hours a week of support, over two days a week, by Chris Richardson and Harold Mitcham.

All users are set up with their own email addresses and keep in contact with friends and family all over the world. Many have grandchildren who are amazed that their grandparents are so 'with it' to be online. Many also use Google to research various projects, plus many news services, from their home countries.

Due to the age of the original machines, which could not be upgraded and run current versions of software the desk top PC's are now running windows 10 (not 7).   We do keep them up to date!  . So the lounge is up to date again

The management at Trinder Park converted a room in their entertainment area for exclusive use of the internet lounge – so we do not interfere with other activities, and have added a Wi-Fi router so residents with their own laptops and other devices can connect into the system.

The social contact with people from outside the village is also of great value to the users, not to mention to Chris and Harold. A 'quiet' project that is still ongoing for our club.

NEWS ITEM

Ever walk into a room with some purpose in mind, only to completely forget what that purpose was? Turns out, doors themselves are to blame for these strange memory lapses. Psychologists at the University of Notre Dame have discovered that passing through a doorway triggers what's known as an event boundary in the mind, separating one set of thoughts and memories from the next. Your brain files away the thoughts you had in the previous room and prepares a blank slate for the new locale."It's not ageing, it's the bloody door!"

Lion Greg says that he is now developing a strong belief in the “hereafter”.

Every time he goes into a different room he thinks, “What am I hereafter?”

Australia Day,

26 January, 2018

Australia Day, 26 January, is the biggest day of celebration in the country and is observed as a public holiday in all states and territories. On Australia Day we come together as a nation celebrate what's great about Australia and being Australian.

It's the day to reflect on what we have achieved and what we can be proud of in our great nation. It's the day for us to re-commit to making Australia an even better place for the future.

What's great about Australia? There are many great things about this country:

The people - The life savers on the beach and the farmers in the bush; the larrikins; our sporting heroes, artists and visionaries;

the volunteers who dedicate their lives to others; the spirit of pulling together in hard times and achieving beyond expectation;

the eminent Australians from all walks of life, the battlers and the ordinary Australians who are anything but ordinary.

Our land - Fragile yet enduring. Harsh and extreme, lush and bountiful-a continent like no other. Our ancient land offers boundless opportunity, sustains us and makes us who we are.

Our diversity - A nation of difference and unity. People from the city, the country, different nations and backgrounds;

we are one people, living together. Through our diverse beliefs and experiences we learn from each other and grow together.

The indigenous cultures - The rich and resilient spirituality; the knowledge, art and history. Aboriginal and

Torres Strait Islander peoples are part of Australia's identity and culture.

Our freedom and democracy - A society built on fundamental rights and responsibilities. Freedom of thought and expression.

Participation in government and respect for and equality under the law.

A fair go for all - An enduring spirit of mateship and fairness. A compassionate society committed to access to employment, housing, health and education. Ours is a land of opportunity where we can do anything.

TRADITIONALLY,

the Lions Club of Rochedale Springwood

meets on 26 January

to host an

Australian Citizenship Ceremony

This year we anticipate 28 conferees at our ceremony held at the Community Centre at Trinder Park Rest Home in Laurel Street Woodridge

We Give

Our clubs are willing to do whatever it takes to make communities better places to live. And we matter locally because people know they can count on the Lions to pitch in. In fact, it’s impossible to imagine what communities would be like without their local Lions club. And while we’re known for improving eyesight, our causes are as diverse as our membership. .

Our members are very different from one another in many respects, but they share a core belief: community is what we make it. And for our members, being part of something larger matters. Because as Lions, they have the power to improve communities and the world. They are living proof that the whole really is bigger than the sum of its parts.

It’s fun to be a Lion — connect with fellow members both locally and internationally in activities that are more than just leisure or recreation. The shared experiences and achievements of Lions club members are powerful and treasured.

When you join Lions, you join a global service network. So at the same time you’re helping your own community locally, you can also contribute to Lions community efforts in other countries. A Lion never wonders, “What can one person do?”

SPOTLIGHT ON THE IMAGE OF A LION

Remember that our Newsletter theme, again this year is N.O.W. If you have not asked someone to become a Lion, the best time to do that is N.O.W. Don’t wait! Now is the best time.

No Other Way

Asking someone to become a Lion means that you have to talk with the person about Lions, give them a bit of Lions History, a sense of what Lions are all about, some examples of how Lions impact on people’s lives on the local and international levels, and some sense of what Lions means to you and how Lions Club membership has impacted on your life.

LETTERS TO The EDITOR

Dear Greg,

A drink-drive warning –timely pre Christmas/New Year holiday season.

I would like to share an experience with your readers, about drinking and driving.

As you well know, some of us have been known to have had brushes with the authorities on our way home from the odd social session over the years.

A couple of nights ago, I was out for a few drinks with some friends and had a few too many beers and some rather nice claret.

Knowing full well I may have been slightly over the limit, I did something I've never done before - I took a bus home.

I arrived home safely and without incident, which was a real surprise, as I have never driven a bus before and am not sure where I got it from!

Signed,

A Surprised reveller

Dear Greg,

On New Year’s Eve we always seem to gather round and sing ‘Auld Lang Syne”. I’m not sure what it means and I only know some of the words. Can you help me with the second verse?

Lion Mystified

Dear Lion Mystified,

Auld Lang Syne was partially written by Robert Burns in the 1700's, it was first

published in 1796 after Burns' death. Early variations of the song were sung prior to 1700 and inspired Burns to produce the modern rendition. An old Scotch tune, 'Auld Lang Syne' literally means 'old long ago,' or simply, 'the good old days.' Here are the lyrics: however, many people seem to remember only the first verse.

Auld Lang Syne

Should auld acquaintance be forgot

and never brought to mind?

Should auld acquaintance be forgot

and days of auld lang syne?

For auld lang syne, my dear,

for auld lang syne,

we'll take a cup of kindness yet,

for auld lang syne.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot

and never brought to mind?

Should auld acquaintance be forgot

and days of auld lang syne?

And here's a hand, my trusty friend

And gie's a hand o' thine

We'll tak' A cup o' kindness yet

For auld lang syne.

The Spirit of Lionism

I am the Spirit of Lionism.

Lionism, a movement honoured today in many lands, when created, born and struggling for strength, it was I who brought the inspiration which gave a being, a purpose and a shape to the infant organization.

I have inspired comradeship, brotherhood and a love of service. I have opened the portals of the mind to higher and better things. I have released the forces of kindness and of helpfulness and they in turn have given radiance to things which were dull and shapeless.

When Lions visited far away lands at conventions, carrying with them the flag of their countries, into places where it was previously unrecognized, I imbued them with a just pride in the ensign of their nation and all that it stands for.

I thrilled their being with a fervent love for the land which was theirs, and gave them the power to proclaim their allegiance to the homeland from which they came.

I am the companion of tradition, the partner force with which I work to build Lionism.

My power fills the hearts of Lions with the will to be knights of the blind, and to triumph over the sorrows of mankind. I inspire Lions with gentleness and compassion and assist them in their resolve to help other people.

Never ceasing, never resting, I move the energies and inspirations of those who come under my spell. I have sent Lions across the tropical zones of equatorial regions, to far away lands, across mountains and oceans, until the story, the power, the ambitions and the hopes which have been created by people under the banner of Lionism has become a theme of universal notice.

From a small, almost unnoticed, force 100 years ago I radiated a circle which has become wider and wider until it has expanded from a small group of concerned businessmen to a legion around the world with every Lions Club fired with a zealous pride in the strong but largely unseen force which today makes up the current tradition.

As long as I am a pulsating force, as long as my potency remains unimpaired, so will the organization grow in strength and power.

For I am the Spirit which is Lionism.

Without it all things material will be inanimate. All that stands as shapes and forms will be merely husks, lifeless, colourless, inarticulate.

So long as I live and am strong enough to initiate responses, just so long will Lionism remain a vibrant pulsing force. Without my radiance Lionism would become but ashes of former greatness.

And it is written that the Spirit forever inspires all great works.

For I am the Spirit of Lionism.
