Running your Lionel Gold 700E Hudson with a Lionel transformer

Place your Gold 700E Hudson on Lionel or Lionel-compatibleO gauge track.• Note the Traction-Enhancing Tire installed on the center drivers that gives

you Gold 700E Hudson extra driver-railhead grip. After extensive use, this tire mayrequire replacement. See your authorized Lionel Service Center for expert tirereplacement service. Lionel Traction-TirePart No. 610-8043-206.

• With track power OFF, Connect thedrawbar between locomotive and tender.Thats all you have to do with Lionel’s newWireless Tether® , an infrared communica-tion system that eliminates the plugs andwires of the past.

Power up your Gold 700E Hudson with your transformer.• Your Gold 700E Hudson is designed to operate on 10-18 volts

alternating current. Virtually all Lionel and Lionel-compatible alternating-current transformers are suitable; we recommend the TrainMaster Command modelrailroad control system.

• Do not power your Gold 700E Hudson with direct current (DC).Damage to sensitive electronic components may occur.

• When you first power up your track, the Gold 700E Hudson willwait between 3 and 8 seconds as it “listens” for digital language from theTrainMaster Command Base (available separately). When it’s determined that it’son a conventional (nonCommand) railroad, the Gold 700E Hudson’s headlight willilluminate and Railsounds will fire up. At this point, the Gold 700E Hudson is inneutral. (This occurs when placing the Hudson on your railroad for the first time.Thereafter, it starts in forward after every three-second power interruption.)

Note!

Move ‘em out!• Get your Gold 700E Hudson moving. Press the DIR button on your CAB-1

remote or Lionel transformer. This sequences the Liontech Command reverse unit(R2LC) to the next operating state.

• Adjust track voltage until your Hudson moves at your desired speed.

11

Your Lionel Gold 700E Hudson will negotiate 0-42 and larger curves.

T o select a single operational state foryour Lionel Gold 700E Hudson (exam-

ple: forward only), you can deactivate theR2LC’s sequencing function with the reverseunit control switch, located between thefront and center drivers on the right-handside, under the boiler casting.

Get your locomotive moving in the

desired direction, then slow it down withoutstopping. Set the reverse unit control switchto PROGRAM/LOCK. The Gold 700E Hudsonis now “locked” into your chosen direction.

When you no longer want single-direc-tion operation, just slide the reverse unitcontrol switch back to FORWARD/ RUN.

Please remove protective cover from battery clip.

Although RailSounds is powered by track voltage, the battery is required for unin-terrupted operation. Use only alkaline batteries.

Discontinue locomotive power for 10 seconds before changing the RailSoundson/off switch position.

If RailSounds “drops out” during track power interruptions (direction change),replace the battery.

Your Gold 700E Hudson’s RailSounds system—the basics

Lionel RailSounds is the mostrealistic model railroad sound

system in the world. Your Gold 700EHudson features the RailSoundsHudson digital sound system for theultimate in realism.

Begin by in-stalling a 9-voltalkaline battery in the tender. Thisensures interuption free operationof your RailSounds. You mustremove the tender body from theframe to install the battery. Firstremove the 6 mounting screws fromthe underside of the tender. Carefully removethe tender body and connect the 9V alkalinebattery to the connector. Be careful not tocome in contact with the electronic compo-nents in the tender. These components arevery sensitive and damage may occur.Carefully replace the tender body on theframe and install the 6 screws.

When you first apply track power, theGold 700E Hudson’s RailSounds system pro-

duces sounds of a locomotive at rest. As yourHudson moves, chuffing begins, increasingwith the locomotive’s speed.

To silence the steam chuffing(whistle/bell are unaffected), slide theRailSounds switch, located under the tender,to the Off position before powering up thelocomotive. The whistle is activated by usingthe lever or button on your transformer orCAB-1.

W ith RailSounds, you experience thesounds of real railroading like never

before. Simply put, it’s the most sophisticat-ed, authentic model railroad sound system inthe world. And remember—inside yourLionel Gold 700E Hudson and tender are thesounds of the RailSounds Hudson digitalsound system. No other electric train canoffer you authentic Hudson sounds. That’sthe power of Lionel.

• Variable chuff rate. Your Gold 700E’sspeed determines the steam chuff rate.

• MultiWhistle™. Different whistlesevery time—a RailSounds exclusive.

• Authentic bell. Press BELL on yourCAB-1 or transformer to begin the effect, again to discontinue. Even the final “hit”is muted like the real thing.

• Reverse unit reset sound. Powerdown your track, wait for 3-5 seconds, and listen for the air-release sound—that’s the Gold 700E Hudson telling youits Liontech Command reverse unit hasjust reset to forward operation.

• Shutdown sequence. No other modelrailroad sound system shuts down likeRailSounds. Turn off track power, andafter the air-release reset sound, you havetwo seconds to restart your Gold 700EHudson. If you’re done with operations,RailSounds will commence with anauthentic Hudson shutdown sequenceabout two seconds after the air-releasereset occurs.

Experiencing the range of your Gold 700E Hudson’s RailSounds system

Notes on RailSounds

• Use the volume control dial located onthe underside of the tender to adjustsound output (see page 5).

• Listen for incidental engine sounds dur-ing RailSounds operation. They’re auto-matic and, of course, authentic.

• The 9-volt alkaline battery you installedensures continuous Hudson sounds, evenduring short track-power interruptions.

• Longer track-power interruptions(including locomotive derailments)cause RailSounds to shut down afterabout 7 seconds.

• For even more authentic RailSoundseffects, operate your Gold 700E Hudson inthe TrainMaster Command environment.See page 9 for details.

Your Gold 700E Hudson in the TrainMaster Command environment

L ionel TrainMaster Command is the fun and sophisticated model railroad control

system. Your Gold 700E Hudson features theLiontech Command reverse unit, which actsas a conventional reverse unit as well as thekey to unlocking many extra features whenyou operate in Command mode.

TrainMaster Command gives you thepower to operate multiple Command-

equipped locomotives on the same track, atthe same time. It’s the most fun you canhave with electric trains, and it’s incrediblyeasy too! Just follow the directions below andyou’ll be on your way.

To operate in Command, youneed a Command Base and a CAB-1remote. Find them both at your authorizedLionel retailer.

Place your Gold 700E Hudson on Lionel or Lionel-compatible O gauge track.

• Make sure track power is OFF before placing it on track.• Make sure your Lionel Command Base is ON and its communications

wire is connected to the COMMON post on your Lionel transformer or the U on anyof your installed PowerMasters.

• Once positioned on the track, increase track voltage to FULL (onPowerMaster, slide the CMD/CONV switch to CMD).

Address your Gold 700E Hudson with CAB-1.

• Press ENG and 1 on the numeric keypad of your CAB-1 remote. This commandis sent by CAB-1 to the Command Base, which then translates your commands intodigital code. That code is sent around your railroad’s outside rails in the form of adigital “halo.” All Command-equipped Lionels listen to this digital communica-tion, but they do not respond until they hear their own ID number.

• The digital language of TrainMaster Command—and not track power—controlsthe actions of Command-equipped Lionels. Track power is simply like gasoline inthe tank of your car—it gives you the power to go places, but it doesn’t tell youwhere to go or how fast to get there.

• All Command-equipped Lionels come factory-programmed with anID# of “1.” To change your Gold 700E Hudson’s ID#, see page 14.

Move ‘em out!

• Throttle up or press any command button on CAB-1. Your Gold 700EHudson will respond to your every command. Read on. The fun is just beginning!

ing relaxes to a more sedate sound, asthough the load placed on the Gold 700EHudson has decreased. ExperienceDynaChuff on steep grades, at yardcrawls, and at speed. Another RailSoundsexclusive.

Maintaining your Gold 700E Hudson’s handrail antenna

Your Gold 700E Hudson’s handrails aremore than just model grab irons—

they’re the R2LC’s antenna for receivingCommand Base digital communications. Please handle the Gold 700E Hudson careful-ly to avoid handrail damage. To ensure opti-mum reception, both handrails are insulatedfrom the die-cast shell. If your Gold 700E

Hudson experiences difficulty receiving Basecommunications, check the handrail ends inthe cab and pilot for the presence of insulat-ing material. Ensure each stanchion is pre-sent and enjoys a proper fit. Finally, preventthe handrails from touching any part of thedie-cast locomotive cab.

Help your Lionel Gold 700E Hudson leada long and productive life on your

railroad by maintaining it properly. We recommend you purchase

a Lionel Lubrication andMaintenance Kit (part no. 6-62927), available from yourLionel dealer. Two basic rules tokeep in mind: never over-lubricate (a small amountwill do), and avoid gettinggrease or oil on the Gold700E Hudson’s wheels, contact rollers,

Traction-Tire, or your track. You’ll know your Gold 700E Hudson

requires lubrication when visualinspection reveals dryness on the

parts indicated in the illustration.Remove accumulated dirt anddust before lubricating, andalways lubricate any locomotiveemerging from prolonged stor-age. Also, lightly lubricate the
