Welcome!

Bruckner’s soundburstsThe International Bruckner Festival is a cultural highlight starting on 15 Sep 2013 in the Donaupark with the Klassische Linzer Klangwolke in honour of Anton Bruckner. The Clouds of Sound form a unique synthe-sis of the arts including music, light, lasers, fireworks and computer animations, thrilling thousands of people each year (see p. 8).15 September to 6 October 2013.

Music transformsYou are my Heart’s Delight. Overnight, this world-famous song from Franz Lehár’s operetta the land of smiles turned Linz-born tenor Richard Tauber into a global star. Music is a world pow-er – it moves and transforms. It touches the heart and soul. The opening of Europe’s latest music theatre and many points of reference which major compos- ers and musicians have to Linz as well as the city’s extensive musical creativity are good reasons to focus attention on this world power in 2013. Discover a Linz that lies between the loud and soft, between classical and modern music. Music is the most powerful and comfort- ing source of inspiration to enrich our lives. Surrender to new approaches to music and to a city with liveliness and creativity rather than romantic nos- talgia. A city in which you can already hear the sounds of the future.

Linz, the capital of music, offers the Bruckner Festival, the Klang-wolke, the new Musiktheater, the Post-hof, Dennis Russell Davies and Parov Stelar. The aspirations of the Cultural Capital of Linz are more dynamic and more ambitious than almost anywhere else. Enjoy experimentation and en-counters with the extraordinary. The city is a hive of cultural activity, especially when it comes to music – and the pre-sent diverse mosaic of images, sounds, performers and events reflects an en- riching diversity of styles and sounds.

The new Musiktheater sets new standards in technology,

repertoire, ambience, service, education programmes and audience facilities.

The new Musiktheater, the Bruck-ner Orchester Linz and revered

names such as Dennis Russell Davies and Philip Glass make the city a pulsating centre of music and the performing arts. Culture vultures are in for an entirely new era of surprising delights with the opening of Europe’s latest opera house.

Opening: Each weekendis a festivalWith seats for 1,200 people the new Musiktheater is Austria’s biggest cul-tural building. The technical equip-ment is unique: The stage serves as

a transport hub and with a diameter of 32 m is one of the largest in the world. Several changes of scene can be prepared at one and the same

time. No other theatre in the world provides this combination of proven hi-tech. For the opening festival the Landestheater Linz will be offering a fireworks display of highlights and

resounding names – from Philip Glass to Tosca – each weekend starting on 11 April.

A congenial duoThe friendship between US composer Glass and the princi-pal conductor of the Bruckner Orchester Linz, Dennis Russell Davies enables new composi-tions by minimal music’s most important representative to be

premiered at the opening in Linz. Glass (75) attained cult status through his operas and scores for the Hours, Dracula, the truman show and Koyaanisqatsi. He describes his

L inz, the city on the Danube, plays its own immensely exciting

music score. Against the backdrop of steel, chrome and a rich cultural heritage, the city follows in the foot-steps of Bruckner. It encour- ages innovations, experiments and the extraordinary. As a result, the Linzer Klangwolke has received global attention. 1979 was the first year when music flowed out of the Brucknerhaus into the autumn air as an audiovisual spectacular for up to 100,000 visitors on the banks of the Danube. Anyone can access and afford to enjoy culture in Linz. Elitism is elsewhere!

Soundscape of the cityAlmost 40 years ago the opening of the Brucknerhaus attracted a similar

amount of interest as the opening of the new Musiktheater this year. The timelessly beautiful structure of Ark-kitehtitoimisto Sirén & Co, a Finnish firm of architects, is set to become the soundscape of the city. Good acoustics and a musical programme ranging from classical to brass draw around 200,000 culture vultures to the concert halls of the Bruckner-haus each season.

The joy of music for everyoneWith its three concert halls of the Großes Haus, the Kammerspiele and the u\hof for younger audiences, the Landestheater takes you to a world between dreams and reality. As of April performances migrate from the Promenade to Europe’s latest music theatre.

Linz’s Posthof has offered contempo-rary culture at the port for decades. It hosts about 250 individual events ranging from music, dance, theatre and cabaret each year. Major stars and local up-and-coming artists perform at the Posthof which in the 18th century served as a stop on the horse-drawn railway from Linz to Bud-weis. Well, it’s certainly post-modern!

Linz is a hive of music. From the Brucknerhaus, Landestheater and Posthof to the new Musiktheater, Linz deserves a listen.

8 LINZ.VERÄNDERT,

Bruckner is alive! Linz and its surroundings shaped the outstanding composer of symphonies: the genius returned the compliment by turning music history on its head.

The Bruckner Festival honours the musical genius of Anton

Bruckner. The divine spirit of “God’s composer” has never been livelier than it is today. Bruckner lived in and around Linz from 1824 to 1896. The Brucknerhaus, the Bruckner Festival and the private Bruckner University (under construction) still honour the composer today. And lest we forget, there’s also the Bruckner Stairway in the Alter Dom or Old Cathedral. For the very first time, this memorial site enables visitors to approach the composer – step by step. Anyone visiting the Bruckner Stairway is also treading in the paths which Bruckner once took.

Following the footsteps of a visionaryFor music connoisseurs Bruckner is a Leonardo da Vinci of symphony. He was the first composer to incorporate elements in his music from a medium which didn’t even exist in his lifetime: film. Cut, fade to black and crossfade – after Bruckner the history of music was turned upside down. Follow the footsteps of a visionary. Go off on a symphonic walk through his birthplace

of Ansfelden or visit St. Florian’s Priory with Bruckner’s final resting place underneath the priory organ. Discover the genius outside the city.

Well known as a pioneer of electro-swing, a blend of 1930s’ jazz with electronic beats, his world tours meet with resounding success. PAROV STELAR. Linz makes a name for itself – also as a cultural medium for internationally successful artists.

G reat sounds, great names: Linz is rightly proud of its stars –

such as Franz Welser-Möst. Born and bred in Linz, he’s the general music director of the Vienna State Opera and will be conducting the Vienna Philharmonic orchestra at the New Year’s Concert in 2013. Parov Stelar celebrates his global success in a completely different genre – one inspired by classical music in this interview. We asked the pioneer of electroswing to take a few moments out to talk to us.

Your impressive career naturally ma-kes people here feel proud of you. To what extent do you feel an attachment to your roots? What does your home-town mean to you?Parov Stelar: Having a fixed point, a kind of base camp, is particularly im-portant when you spend a lot of time away from home. Home for me is the best place to feel renewed! There’s nowhere else like home. On the contrary, home be-comes ever more important to me.

A passion for the task at hand and fun at work: How important are these for you?Parov Stelar: I think both compo-nents are what you might call the

two pillars of success – they’re inseparable. You have to enjoy your work to be passionate about it. I also think people can feel that in the quality of the finished product.

A propos the new Musiktheater: What kind of impulses do you expect to see for the city?Parov Stelar: I think the Musikthea-ter is good news for Linz and for all music lovers: it offers greater oppor-tunities for contemporary music, just like other international cities – such as Berlin.

People associate Linz with great names and classical musicians – from Bruckner to Franz Welser-Möst. What’s your take on classical music?Parov Stelar: Contemporary clas-sical music is an umbrella term for all kinds of electronic music or

non-commer- cial productions. Bruckner’s 4th and 7th symphonies are the ones I like the best. In fact I’m quite amazed by Anton Bruckner’s life and career because they’re

typical for musicians from Linz. From personal experience I know that people who don’t come from Vienna have to try twice as hard if they want to be respected as artists in Austria.

A musical testing groundLinz is still considered a litmus test for many of the world’s top touring bands. Legends such as Genesis, Nirvana or Pink Floyd deliberately chose to come here in order to start their world tours at the Danube or as an excellent opportunity to polish their performances. Linz is a musical testing ground for the big wide world – a reputation grounded in an abundance of events.

Music is in the airMusic can still be enjoyed all over the city. The Rosengarten on Pöstling-berg, the music pavilion in the Do-naupark, the Posthof, the TipsArena and numerous private venues offer a home to both up-and-coming and established artists. With the LinzFest

DECELERATION

Life in theslow laneFocusing on the essentials. In a non-stop world people need places to slow down a little – Linz is an ideal city for doing so.

L inz believes that sensual journeys lead to a greater quality of life.

Audio City is one such idea: One of the most successful projects from Europe’s Cultural Capital in 2009 has become a permanent fixture – an approach to deceleration and a labo-ratory for acoustics, space and society which addresses the sensory overload and acoustic stress of modern life. Shops and companies have delibe-

rately muted piped music and even the Christmas markets have decided to forego the intrusion of dea-

fening jingle bells! Audio City

will be promoting International Noise Awareness Day on 24 April 2013. De-tails of all of Linz’s “interesting sounds” are available at www.hoerstadt.at

Slow down with StifterLiterature also offers a good way to fo-cus on the essential things in life. Linz offers you plenty of opportunities to do so – at the Stifterhaus, for example, which celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2013. The Adalbert Stifter Institute, a research centre for literature and linguistics as well as the Upper Aus- trian House of Literature are all based in the former home of the famous

writer Adalbert Stifter (1805 – 1868). Visitors to the literature museum can also marvel at the original manuscript of Witiko, one of Stifter’s most famous works. www.stifterhaus.at

Surrender to seduction!

“The great deeds of men are not noisy at all. Important things just happen and are so simple, as the trickle of water, the flow of air, the growth of grain.”

Linz also transforms –your familyFun & amazement. Ask someone from Linz what boredom is and most of them will just shake their head at your question. So do what the locals do: Immerse yourself in the thrilling experience of the city.

There are always plenty of things to do in Linz – the city has a lot

to offer to people of all ages. When robots play football, plants are cloned or you encounter detonator caps for space rockets, then you know you’re in Linz. While other cities celebrate their past Linz looks optimistically towards the future.

Even the revered children’s grotto railway on Pöstlingberg lightens up old fairy tales in a magical atmo- sphere. When, having performed in front of 65 million people, London’s CATS ensemble stops off in Linz then, unlike anywhere else, it does so in a theatre tent for the first time ever in the world. Linz truly is extraordinary.

LINZ AND THE RECENT PAST

The culture of remembranceA city of peace. During World War Two miles of tunnels were built as air-raid shelters and as a command and control centre. Historical tours now enable visitors to experience this subterranean world.

The Limoni tunnel network is a dark chapter in the history

of Linz. Work on the underground passages with a total length of about 14 km began in 1942. Above all, the Limoni tunnels are encapsulated in the memory of local residents who still survive from that time – they were used as air raid shelters for the surrounding housing estates during the war.

Limoni tunnelsPublic tour dates are availablefrom: www.linztermine.atFor group inquiries please call+43 650 2009 [email protected]

Linz remembers the pastAs one of the five führerhauptstädte, Linz bears a special responsibility in regard to its recent history, a past which the city also addresses. Publications, exhibitions and cultural projects are part of a “culture of re-membrance”. A new modern history map casts light on major events in Linz between 1934 and 1955 and is available for free.

Schloss Hartheim MemorialSchloss Hartheim is an educational memorial site in Alkoven. From 1940 to 1944 the Nazis used the castle as a euthanasia centre.www.schloss-hartheim.at

Mauthausen Memorial15 km away from Linz, the Maut-hausen concentration camp site is a harrowing reminder of the Nazi era. Altogether, over 200,000 people were incarcerated here between 1938 and 1945. Half of them did not survive.www.mauthausen-memorial.at

C ities, like people, can be recog- nised by their walk,” Robert

Musil wrote in the man without Qualities. A walk defined in many ways by architecture. In this regard Linz has many outstanding qualities: Dissimilitudes such as the large main square or Hauptplatz in the Old Town – and gleaming cultural buildings

lining the Danube. Contrasts such as the Domplatz with the Mariendom cathedral, and the façade of a 4-star hotel. Visionary industrial architec-ture with the Tabakfabrik building of the 1930s – and the steel world of voestalpine. Recent examples such as the award-winning district around the railway station and the Volksgar-

ten with the new Musiktheater also reveal the transformation of the city.

A RECREATION AREA

Seductive forays into natureTime to refuel. Nature reserves in a city packed with recreation, swimming lakes and parks. Take a deep breath in Linz.

L inz is one of Austria’s greenest cities: 51 parks covering an area

of 400 ha with 103 playgrounds for children and teenagers as well as 700 ha of woodland beg to be explored. Over 50% of urban space consists of green areas.

Hiking in the city centre11 carefully picked city hiking trails lead to and through interesting natu-ral sites – including part of the Way of St. James. Unique, too, is the 450 km long Donausteig trail from Passau to Grein via Linz. Natural gems such as the Traun-Danube river meadows or the Wasserwald water protection area invite you to discover the diver-sity of the flora and fauna in the heart of Linz. Lakes, parks, floodplains and woods are best explored on a guided

tour offered by the Naturkundliche Station, a nature observatory.www.naturschauspiel.at

Lush green agendasCovering an area of 4.2 ha, the Bo- tanical Gardens – one of Europe’s most beautiful parks – contain over 10,000 different plant species includ- ing collections of cacti and orchids. The Pöstlingberg is also a must-see attraction: Simply the ride up on the Pöstlingbergbahn, Europe’s steepest

adhesion railway, is an experience in itself. Halfway up it’s worth stopping off at the Linz Zoo. Once you reach the top, you can enjoy the views of the city on a short walk to the famous pilgrimmage basilica. And last but not least: The promenades along the Danube and the Traun are wonderful places to escape the city and enjoy some peace and quiet. An enticing choice of boat trips invites you to explore the Danube valley. www.donauschifffahrt.linz.at

The Botanical Gardens are

one of the most beautiful

parks in all Europe, a true

haven in the open air…
