CLASS OUTLINE: In this workshop, we will begin with a brief introduction to the linoleum block printmaking materials and techniques. A small sheet of linoleum, 6” X 8”and cutting tools will be provided to each participant. They will bring an idea sketch on tracing paper for the 6” X 8” block to be transferred to the linoleum block. After the design is transferred, there will be sufficient time to finish cutting the design. Next step is to print from the linoleum block plate with water-base block printing inks and Japanese papers. The plate can be re-inked and more prints pulled. With the excess ink, mono-types can be created. Using a piece of blank plexiglas, ink can be manip-ulated in different ways on the plate to make an image that can be trans-ferred to paper. The leftover ink is removed, re-mixed and another image can be made. After the ink is dry, this image can be hand colored with other media such as pastel or colored pencil. Liz was honored to have her linoleum block printing technique featured in the Methods and Materials column by Christopher Willard, the Septem-ber 1999 issue of American Artist Magazine. BACKGROUND: Linoleum is a unique print-making medium. Invented in England during the 1860’s as a flooring material, it is composed of oxidized linseed oil mixed with ground cork and wood fibers, pressed into a burlap backing, then cured in large industrial ovens. Artists have adopted the linoleum material for its smooth surface with no grain. It is easy to cut, soft and flexible, adaptable to different styles and printing techniques. After a printmaking session, there is usually excess ink leftover and this ink can be used up making monotypes. A monotype is a one-of-a-kind print made by transferring an image made using the printmaking inks from a blank
