I am always surprised when I meet a college student or person in business who is the picture of confidence -- smart business attire, great eye contact, smil-ing, perfect posture -- but then when that person goes in for the handshake... his or her handshake is so life-less, so limp, I feel like my next step should be to check the person's pulse. What a let-down! I know labra-doodles that can shake more affirmatively.
Your handshake speaks. It must be firm. It should say: "I am intelligent. I am confi-dent. And I am darn
glad to meet you."
A weak, limp hand-shake says: "I'm not sure of myself. I am not sure about you. I am not sure why I got up this morning."
Your palm fits in the o t h e r p e r s o n ' s palm. Seal the grasp by wrapping your fin-gers around the other person's hand. Don't squeeze the blood out of the other hand, but do give a good firm grip. No need to pump up and down like it's crack-the-whip. Just grasp.
If you are concerned that the person you are
shaking hands with might be frail or suffer-ing from arthritis and a firm handshake might hurt them, then mirror the pressure that per-son puts on your hand.
Practice your hand-shake with friends and other professionals. If you mean business, if you want the job, if you want the sale, say it with a firm handshake.

Job Search Boot Camp features a circuit-training approach to helping students learn the habits
of highly effective job seekers from real employers.
Food, fun and fantastic professional develop-ment opportunities will be provided. A network-ing bullpen and speed interviewing rotation will be accompanied by mini-presentations on resume-building, interviewing etiquette, utilizing social media in the job search, professional image and C a r e e r S e r v i c e s
resources for job seek-ers.
Career Services will give away t-shirts to the first 100 student atten-dees and door prizes to individuals and/or stu-dent organizations that complete the Boot
