PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Fellow members,

The fall weather is here! Golf conditions continue to be spectacular.. hard and fast!

It’s been quite a summer for all of us and something to, at some point in the future, look back

on with wide eyed wonder. We have experienced the biggest increase in membership .. ever! Our Transferable and Family Transferable members are nearing capacity. This success all coming in the middle of a global pandemic. Thanks to all our members that continue to invite their friends and associates to South Hills CC and show off their Club.

The new fire pit area, after much anticipation, will be lit as soon as the first week of October. Just in time for warm fires / Irish coffees and intimate parties. Chuck Voelker, Joe Cecere and a host of members that have put their time, assets and patience into this project should be especially proud. I’m looking forward to seeing the finished project and the reactions from our members and their guests to this fabulous new addition to the Club.

One last point as we experience some growing pains with our many new members at SHCC. When you have guests come to the Club please inform them, beforehand, of our high standards. This includes our dress codes and our expectations of behavior while enjoying the Club’s facilities. Too many times, we have to deal with disciplinary issues after the fact. As current members we need to make sure that we are showing our guests how we expect to be treated while treating them with the same courtesy.

Lastly, our latest Police Appreciation Day was an unadulterated success!! The smiles on the faces of our friends in the law enforcement community were evident throughout the day. Our membership continues to show how much they care for the people that take care of us on a daily basis. Specifically Trish Ivy and Tim Veith should be congratulated. You two go above and beyond! And to the rest of our volunteer army....Well done!! I’ve never been more proud to belong to this Club.

Sincerely,

Chris

Thanks to all Members for your enthusiastic support of South Hills Country Club during this incredible period in our history. Despite the COVID-related circumstances and restrictions, usage of the golf course, swimming pool and dining facilities has been fantastic!

As we transition into fall, our Club staff is working to sustain this positive energy and adapt as we navigate through the pandemic. We will extend the outdoor dining season through October, and the Club has added new exterior lighting on the Patio and additional propane heaters to enhance your experience. It is our hope that the new fireplace will be fully operational by the first week of October, which will be a perfect time to relax and enjoy the cooler October evenings. You may have heard that clubs and restaurants were recently given the opportunity to apply for permission to operate at 50% seating capacity. Unfortunately, there are many requirements to receive this permission that we cannot meet so the Board has agreed that we will continue to operate at 25% of each dining area’s seating capacity until Pennsylvania state restrictions are further reduced or lifted. COVID capacity restrictions have also impacted plans for traditional Club events. As a result, we have modified arrangements for the annual Children’s Halloween Party, however, I am confident that our Halloween Parade will be a huge success for our families with young children. Looking ahead, we anticipate that the Club will not offer a traditional Thanksgiving dinner buffet. While this is disappointing, we will be able to expand the number of Members who can be accommodated with “To go” dinner packages. Let’s hope that capacity restrictions are eased prior to the Christmas holiday season. In closing, I would like to thank and recognize the outstanding staff personnel at South Hills Country Club. I am honored and proud to lead such a great team! Sincerely, Frank S. Hamschin General Manager

2020 has been a great year for Membership, in spite of the pandemic. We have all faced many challenges this year, but our Membership has really risen to the occasion. As we all know, our best source for new Members is our existing Membership. Many of our Members have referred new Members, encouraged their children to enroll under our Legacy Program and introduced their friends, neighbors and co-workers to SHCC! As of the end of September, we have increased our equity membership by 15, our golfing Membership by 27 and overall have net gain of 42 Members! What does this mean to SHCC? • We have captured over $230,000 in initiation fees - An

unprecedented dollar figure and a record year for sure! • Beginning in January of 2021, we will see a net increase in monthly

dues receipts of over $17,000! • New Members have voluntary signed a two year loyalty agreement

demonstrating their commitment to SHCC and ensuring that they will remain with the Club after the current incentive programs have expired

• We have increased funding to the Capital Fund and Range Fund helping to compensate for shortages due to the COVID situation.

And all of this is just the financials! The true benefit of Membership growth is that we have increased our community. We have more families, more golfers, more diners and more folks enjoying SHCC as a whole. We have tripled our under 40 population in the last two years and significantly impacted our median age, making SHCC a young vibrant Club. Ladies’ golf is growing, Junior golf is growing, and we are a destination where families of all ages and lifestyles can come to enjoy golf, swimming, fabulous food, friendship and camaraderie!

A note about our Membership Process: When a new Member Applicant come to us without sponsorship, we reach out to the Membership Committee and ask for volunteer sponsors. In these cases, the sponsors have no personal knowledge of the applicant or their background but volunteer to help the Membership Nominee integrate to our SHCC Community and feel welcome at Club functions. We had this kind of applicant in September, who, ultimately was determined to not be a fit for our Club. The Hinsch and Harhai families generously volunteered to help through our established process and had no personal knowledge or association with the candidate.

FROM THE LADIES’ TEE

Happy Fall! Although we had a later than usual start to our 2020 Season due to Covid-19, the WGA played a lot of golf this season! We will finish strong with our Closing Day, which is scheduled for Tuesday October 6th. Golf will begin at 9 am with a new “Pink Lady Event”. A pink ball will be rotated within each 3-person group, and the score of that ball will determine winners. Lunch and WGA Fall Meeting will follow golf. All WGA members are encouraged to attend the lunch meeting, even if you are unable to golf. A new slate of officers for the 2021 Executive Board has been posted by the Nominating Committee. WGA members will vote on this proposed slate of officers at the Fall Meeting:

President Leslie Barton VP’s Mary Jo Simon & Maureen Jacovino Secretary Vicky Thatcher

(Sue Pasqual has one more year in her term as Treasurer) WGA golf highlights from last month include the following: The winner of Ten Ladies Out was Suzan Dunn. Congrats! The field was very competitive, but Suzan was able to outlast Leslie Barton on the final hole. The BLUE team was the winner of this year’s ever-so-popular Solheim Cup. Members of the winning team were Terry Sands (captain), Leslie Barton, Kathy Backa, Beth Smith, Dina Marshall, Mary Jo Simon, Karen Ubinger, Rosann Elinsky, Amy Baloh, Betsy Fluhme, Sue Pasqual, Melissa Quallich, and Donna Tatko. The RED team fought hard and enjoyed drinks after this FUN DAY. Dora Zezulewicz won the Three Blind Mice weekly event Joan Livingston was the winner of the WGA Lagging weekly event

The Championship will follow the Ladies Closing Day event on October 6th and will feature 36 of the areas best high school golfers. Local media will be covering the event which will provide an opportunity to showcase our course and Club. Great work Tony in pulling this together for SHCC. Prepaid green fees have been used heavily in 2020 and are approaching a low point for this time of year. The prepaids expire on December 31st, so please use your remaining guest fees before year-end. The preliminary schedule for 2021 is in the works. Heather is eager to begin working on the events and updating the Club calendar so that Members can begin planning their 2021 golf. The greens aerification process will take place October 13th-14th. With aerification occurring this late in the season, it is important to understand recovery will be slower. Our ultra-aggressive approach to aerification is geared towards reducing organic matter, increasing infiltration/percolation rates, improving internal drainage, and our continued efforts towards producing firm, fast and consistent putting surfaces. The following is a breakdown of our aerification procedure. • Fertility – As soil temperatures drop, microbial activity in the

soils slow down. With the microorganisms not able to mineralize organic nutrients for growth we will rely on raw materials. Ammonium nitrate, potassium nitrate and ammonium phosphate will be used to stimulate growth for recovery.

• Core Aerification – 5/8” cores on 2x2 inch spacing will be removed from the greens. After the cores are cleaned, all holes will be filled with 20/80 silica sand. We will then heavily topdress the greens overtop of the filled holes.

• Solid Tine Aerification – 5/8” soil tine holes on 2x2 inch spacing will be punched directly following core aerification and topdressing. Additional sand will be added and drug into the solid tine holes. All sand left after holes are filled will remain on the greens. Putting surfaces are expected to be sand coved for at least a week following aerification.

• Deep-Tine Aerification – We will delay our deep-tine greens aerification process until the onset of winter (end of November). We will punch ½” soil holes on 2x2 inch spacing to the depth of 8-9 inches. These holes will remain open throughout the winter months. This will allow water to freeze/thaw within the soil profile creating air pore space for root development next spring.

We do understand the displeasure many members have towards greens aerification, but it is a necessary evil to produce desired putting surfaces. The Grounds staff will work quickly and efficiently to complete these practices minimizing disruption to play. If there are any questions regarding our aerification procedures this fall, please feel free to contact me. Best Regards, Bryan Flaherty, Golf Course Superintendent
