The SFX button indicates the availability of the reference from an external service

Click the SFX button.

The SFX screen opens

The title of the article and the source (i.e. the journal name), publication date, volume, issue and page numbers are displayed at the top of the screen.

In this example the full text is available. Click the ‘GO’ button. This links you to the full text of the article.

In this example the reference is a book.

The ‘Holding information’ area links to the WorldCat database (tells you which libraries hold this book worldwide) and also links to the UCT Libraries online catalogue (ALEPH).

Click on the ‘GO’ Button from the ‘Holdings in UCT Library catalogue’ area. This will link you to UCT Libraries catalogue.

In this example the book is available at UCT Libraries.

This is an example of a journal article in the ‘Journal of evolutionary biology’.

By clicking the ‘GO’ button from the ‘Holdings in UCT Library catalogue’ area, you will find out whether UCT Libraries subscribes to the print version of this journal or not.

In this example a message appears at the top of the record in the UCT Libraries catalogue: “The requested record is not in the database” which tells you that the print version of this journal title is not available at UCT Libraries.

Let’s take a look at the link to the database ‘PubMed’ from RefWorks.

Some references will have a link to PubMed, ‘View in PubMed’. In some instances you can link to the full text of the article from PubMed.

You can also link to ‘Related Documents’ from here as well as to more articles by one or more authors from the drop down list. Click the ‘GO’ button to see more articles by a particular author.
