JJessica Meuse of Slapout, Alabama in Elmore County didn’t capture the top prize on popular TV show, American Idol, in 2014, but she is a winner in the eyes of the Montgomery River Region residents. And, her popularity stretches far beyond the borders of Alabama.

Jessica’s concert schedule has her traveling across the United States from Nashville, Tennessee to Anchorage, Alaska to Los Angeles, California.

And of course, she has a number of Alabama venues scheduled. We caught up with her lending her talent to support the Humane Society of Elmore County’s, “Getting Down with the Dawgs $10,000 Draw Down” in Wetumpka. Both Jessica and her family are strong supporters of the Human Society and she also worked at the shelter as a teenager. Her parents are Charles and Shelia Arlene Meuse. She also has a brother, Cody Meuse.

To watch her perform and interact with her fans, you would never know this talented singer, songwriter and musician ever had a difficult season in her life. However, growing up for Jessica was not easy as her family moved often with her mom’s work, so she used music to help her through those awkward years.

Jessica said, “I started writing stories and poetry, then

songs. My songs were always too long. But when I turned 18, it all came together.” In addition to her writing and vocal skills, she has mastered several instruments including the guitar and piano. She is also a classically trained violinist.

Jessica began her public appearances at the age of 10. Her self-released debut album entitled, “What’s So Hard About Bein’ A Man” containing nine original tracks was made in 2011.

In addition to being a contestant on American Idol, and touring with the Idols LIVE Tour in the Summer of

2014 where they visited 40 different cities in the United States and Canada, Jessica was a contestant on Season 3 of NBC’s “The Voice” where she made it to the blind audition. She also performed a set at the Vans Warped Tour in Atlanta, Georgia in the

summer of 2013.

After her American Idol experience, she traveled to Los Angeles to record her first independent single, “Done”. Earlier this year, she released her second independent single, “Rio Grande” which was produced in Orange County, California.

Jessica goal is to have a successful career in the music industry. She favors the 90’s style country music, but likes to add a little rock and roll to some of her songs. Her songs are about everyday life. She says, “I want to follow where God can use me.”

Cracks. Bumps. This is the description most people give when asked about the condition of several roads in Montgomery Alabama. It seems that the majority of these damaged roads are located in the oldest sections of town, in particular, the west side. For example, the condition of Norman Bridge Road is said to be so bad that there are parts of it that force cars to almost lean to one side. City council officials are very aware of road conditions and there need for improvement. Roughly 250 miles of roadway need to be re-paved but funds to carry out this formidable task are short. The dilemma council members face is deciding which roads should receive the quickest attention. It’s no surprise, then, that roads like Norman Bridge would be at the top of the list. However, less damaged roads will remain as they are. Leaving a bumpy, cracked road “as is” would not only be an uncomfortable ride but also an eyesore, for sure. More importantly, bad roads left unpaved can severely affect the vehicles of Montgomery drivers long term.

Bad Roads Affect Tire PerformanceBad roads spell bad news for tires. For instance, when a driver runs over a sizable pothole, the vehicle’s steering and suspension parts can be damaged. Moreover, the driver will lose temporary control of the vehicle as it drifts out of alignment. This action causes the tires to wear out much faster. To report a pothole, dial 311.Badly worn tread reduces tire traction and also reduces the driver’s handling of the vehicle when turning, riding on a curve or riding on a slick road. Why Tire Maintenance is EssentialContinually rolling over potholes and deep cracks on a road or highway significantly jars the vehicle’s tires which can cause them to lose more pressure than usual. It is important that all four of the vehicle’s tires perform as uniformly as possible by making sure each tire has a similar degree of wear and air pressure. Tires lose about one pound per square inch (psi) in a month. For this reason, tire pressure, including that of the spare tire, must be checked monthly.

Why You Need to Regularly Maintain Your Tires

Tire RotationSome consumers decide to rotate their tires themselves while the majority will opt to have this done by a professional. The advantage of a service garage is that the technician has the ability to access all four wheels at the same time and can balance them and rotate them correctly. Restoring the tire’s correct pressure can also be addressed. An imbalanced wheel can create vibrations and uneven wear to both the tire and the car. However, this issue can be corrected with the addition of weights placed in the tire.Drive WheelsThe tread on drive wheels typically wears down at a faster rate. This is to be expected especially on front-wheel-drive cars because they handle the majority of the car’s load (roughly 60 percent,) and aid in the steering and forward motion of the car. Rotating the drive tires alone creates better tire wear to level out to prevent mismatched treads.

Car Maintenance Involves More Than an Oil ChangeCar maintenance involves more than just getting an oil change. Keeping the car’s tires in good shape is essential in helping the vehicle maintain proper alignment especially when riding over uneven, pothole riddled roads. Maintenance of the car’s tires can also prevent safety hazards. ConclusionSince tires perform differently when worn than when new, the most proactive measure Montgomery car owners can take is to follow a regular tire maintenance schedule and keep their tires properly inflated. Tire maintenance, in itself, can greatly minimize car damage and fatal accidents.

Just for HerLook Like A BeautyWithout the Sleep(how to fake a good night’s sleep)

As we spring ahead again and adjust our internal clocks for Daylight Savings, we must be prepared for those mornings when sleep doesn’t come naturally – a condition known as “Daylight Savings Hangover.” The good news is that there is a way to look refreshed and awake – even if your sleep schedule is in the dumps.

Tip 1: Shut it down – electronics that is. Before going to sleep, shut down all electronics – that means TV, computer and, yes, your blackberry. These all are stimulants for the brain, and if you’re answering emails in bed at 10 p.m., you’re going to have a difficult time getting to sleep. Hit the power switch at least an hour before bedtime.

Tip 2: Get up … NOW! Once the alarm goes off, get out of bed immediately. Snoozing is not sleep; it’s just prolonging the inevitable.

Tip 3: So now that you’re up – do something. Try a morning workout to get motivated and feel energized for the day. Take a quick run or hit an early morning spin class. Be sure to challenge yourself first thing and then see how much easier your morning commute feels.

Tip 4: Hydrate. Great-looking skin isn’t just about what you put on it, but also what you put in your body. Skip that morning cup of coffee, which can be dehydrating, and drink a glass of ice water instead. The cold water will not only give you a kick in the morning, but also help hydrate skin, leaving it looking and feeling refreshed.

Tip 5: Wakeup and fake it! Use a hydrating and stimulating makeup like Almay Wake-Up Makeup – a favorite of celeb Kate Hudson. This product contains essential minerals and ingredients, such as cucumber and aloe, which soothe and hydrate skin. It also has first-of-its-kind encapsulated water technology – once the powder touches your skin, it releases a cooling sensation that gives you an added boost in the morning.

Tip 6: Do NOT skip breakfast. You’ve worked out, you’ve hydrated, you’re looking gorgeous. Why deny your body the nutrients it needs to keep it looking and feeling refreshed by walking out the door without grabbing a quick bite?

How To Grill BurGers:

The Perfect Patty

Cooking

Grilling can be a bit intimidating, but with a few tips, you can make THIS your summer for success. We spoke to barbecue expert Rick Browne, author of “The Ultimate Guide to Grilling,” and he shared with us his essential tips on grilling summer staples. First up: burger basics.

Choosing cuts:

The ground beef you choose for your burgers is a personal choice. Many say to select a package of ground beef with less than 80/20 is a waste. Some chefs say is you want a juicy and moist burger, you have to use a higher percentage of fat, because the fat gives you flavor. It also adds moisture and keeps the burger from being too compact in the center. The fat melts and leaves air pockets, making the burger less dense.

Prep:

Season the ground beef with a teaspoon of salt per pound of meat, pepper, and any other dry seasonings you like. Gently form the meat into balls, and then flatten the balls. Be careful not to press it down with your hands and squeeze it. Some experts recommend putting a dimple in the middle of each patty so the center doesn’t bulge when you cook it.

Grilling:

Season the patties with additional salt if you’d like, then for a medium rare burger, place them on a well-oiled hot grill over direct heat for about three minutes. Turn them and continue to cook over direct heat for about three more minutes. Move the patties to indirect heat and cook for an additional two minutes on each side. The USDA recommends cooking ground beef, pork, veal, and lamb to an internal temperature of 165°F. To test the burger stick a thermometer into each patty sideways so it registers the temperature in the middle of the hamburger.

When the burgers are cooked, remove them from the grill, cover them with foil, and let them sit for another minute or two. His final tip on burgers: “For best results Never serve a hamburger on a regular bun that hasn’t been toasted, because when you bite into the burger the juices start to flow and the bun will fall apart.

Education

For almost a decade, there has been a dramatic shift by educators to increase kids’ interest in careers in science, technology, engineering and math fields (STEM).In fact, one of America’s largest youth-development organizations (it’s been around for almost 115 years), 4-H, along with HughesNet, the leading satellite Internet service provider, are throwing their collective weight behind 4-H Grown — an interactive campaign that invites the estimated 25 million 4-H alumni across the U.S. to help direct sponsorship funding to their state by checking in at www.4-h.org/4hgrown/, tagging friends, and casting votes to bring more science innovation experiences to youth in their communities.Through 4-H Grown, the two organizations hope to bring STEM learning experiences to youth across the country, including small communities where resources for interactive learning may be limited.“In our first year of partnership, National 4-H Council and HughesNet helped thousands of young people experience the excitement of STEM, [and] I am thrilled that our new 2015 program will engage even more young people and expand our

reach to 4-H alumni to show STEM can be rewarding and fun,” says Jennifer Sirangelo, president and CEO, National 4-H Council. The partnership is also giving a $10,000 “Innovation Incubator” Science Sponsorship to the state with the largest number of votes. This sponsorship is new and requires youth across the nation to design innovative science solutions to solve real community challenges. States compete to receive a science sponsorship. Additionally, two young innovators will be selected to receive an all-expense-paid trip to the flagship 4-H National Youth Science Day event in Washington, D.C., where they will participate in the world’s largest youth-led science experiment.“Exposing thousands of children to the excitement of STEM is priceless,” says Mike Cook, senior vice president, Hughes North America Division. “We’re thrilled to continue our work with 4-H to make a difference in kids’ lives.”For more information, or to support your state in 4-H Grown, visit www.4-h.org/4hgrown.

Nothing induces nostalgia like a milkshake, and no wonder — milkshakes have a venerable and tasty history.Milkshakes were developed as health drinks. Of course, ingredients like heavy cream, port wine and whiskey were considered healthy at the time. Originally sold in pharmacies, milkshakes soon made the transition to charming soda fountains, or malt shops.Few Americans have old-fashioned soda fountains in the neighborhood anymore, and the milkshake loses a bit of its charm when it moves from tall, clear glass to fast-food styrofoam cup. But capturing the spirit of yesteryear at home takes only a few ingredients and a blender.Vitamix (www.vitamix.com), maker of the Vitamix 5200, a blender so powerful that it can liquefy whole fruits and vegetables, including their peels and seeds, in seconds, encourages its customers to recapture the spirit of milkshakes past, whether by adding healthy ingredients, like bananas, or by mixing it up with alcohol to appeal to a more adult crowd.Vitamix provides the following recipes for fun, funky milkshakes perfect for sipping. The recipes are designed for the Vitamix 5200, but can be adjusted for your blender by blending the liquid and soft ingredients together before adding any of the harder ingredients.

Peanut Butter Cup MilkshakeYield: 2 1/2 cups1/4 cup milk2 cups vanilla ice cream2 tablespoons peanut butter2 tablespoons chocolate syrup

Place all ingredients in the Vitamix in the order listed. Select Variable 1. Turn on the machine and slowly move to Variable 8. Blend for 35 to 45 seconds.

Choco-Banana MilkshakeYield: 2 cups1/4 cup milk1 1/2 cups vanilla ice cream2 tablespoons chocolate chips1/2 banana, peeled1 teaspoon instant coffee2 tablespoons chocolate syrup1 teaspoon vanilla extract.

Top 5 Healthy Habits for Pets and Their Owners

count!2. Brain BoostersMost people love puzzles — and so does your pet! One of the best ways to feed and treat pets is with a food puzzle. These clever devices hide your pet’s food or treats until they unlock the secret and get their goodies. These tools engage your pet’s brain and bust boredom while you’re away. Forget peanut butter-stuffed toys; these toys stimulate thought and don’t pack on the pounds!3. Power Play Walking your dog and playing with your cat each day keeps them trim, healthy and mentally alert. Pets that don’t receive enough physical activity (“lap potatoes”) have the highest rates of weight-related diseases such as arthritis and diabetes and suffer from behavioral problems. For dogs, 20 to 30 minutes of brisk walking each day benefits both ends of the leash. For cats, two or three five-minute play periods are plenty. And don’t worry! Walking with your pet can be fun! Try programs like Greenies Wag & Walk 4 Life, and get active with your pet.

Pets are the lights of their owners’ lives. And keeping pets healthy is key to extending the warmth and love for years.Dr. Ernie Ward, nationally renowned veterinarian, pet author and founder of the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, offers his ‘Top 5 Healthy Habits’ for pet owners to help ensure pets stay happy and healthy throughout the year:1. Healthy Eats and TreatThe most important decision you make each day regarding your pet’s health is what you feed it. When choosing pet food, look for meat as one of the first few ingredients, and avoid by-products, artificial flavors, colors and preservatives whenever possible. When it comes to treats, look for low-cal options that confer some health benefit. Treats that help maintain healthy joints, clean teeth or ensure pills are taken are recommended. The Greenies Brand specializes in great-tasting treats individually formulated to deliver these benefits. If you’re going to give treats, make them

4. Paws Together It’s more fun to play with other dogs! Socialized dogs are simply better behaved and more fun. Visit a dog park, enroll in training classes or become active in serving your community. There are endless ways to get you and your dog to interact with other pet lovers. Share the fun and join a new pack!5. Pets and VetsSomehow pet owners started believing that the only time you need a vet is when something is wrong with your pet. The secret to a long and healthy life is vet visits when everything appears fine. A pet owner’s primary goal should be to prevent disease, not only treat it. Changes in diet or lifestyle, giving nutritional supplements and exercising more are straight forward solutions. Sometimes you just need a prod; other times a push. Your veterinarian is your pet’s voice; let them speak for your pet by visiting once a year for young pets and twice yearly for those over age seven. For more best-care tips for pets, visit www.greenies.com and www.drernieward.com

I can just be walking by, not even thinking about it particularly, when it stops me cold. And otherwise, I do okay I think.I mean, it crosses my mind sometimes when I pass through the dining room and notice how nice the table looks. There is a runner down the center that matches the walls and trim, but for years the table served as “Lego City.”He would spend hours in there building, and I guess I didn’t have the heart to tell him to tear it all apart. There were houses and stores. There was a church and an arcade. He built cars and a ship and a helicopter. He would play while I would cook supper most every evening. From the kitchen, I could hear him. And if I looked through the door into the dining room, I could see him, his little blonde head bowed, lost in his world of play. Those days, those afternoons, were some of the best days of my life. They aren’t coming back, but I am grateful I had them.So I was not bothered when out of nowhere one day he decided it was time to put Lego City away. I see it in boxes every year in the attic when I climb over them during my annual trip up there to bring down Christmas lights and decorations. It doesn’t stop me when I see them…but, I remember. He used to hunt for Bigfoot too. He would organize hunts with his friends. They would plan and strategize and leave chocolate chip cookies for bait within their homemade traps of string. They would escape into their adventure in the edge of the woods, yet still well within safe sight of the house.

But again, seemingly out of nowhere, he just stopped one day, just like he had once given up on ever catching the tooth fairy. It was the same way with wanting to camp out in the backyard. Summer after summer this was his game. Campfire after campfire, a million memories made, and then one night he was successful. He didn’t come in sometime after midnight like he had all the times before. He slept the entire night in his tent, waking to the sun being out and the back porch light still shining.I was even okay that while all of this was happening, he went from being this little guy I could sweep up in my arms and spin around, to being able to stand beside me and rest his chin on top of my head.By the end of summer he will have his driver’s license.

There is a set of keys on his dresser just waiting. And as much as a mother can be, I guess I’m okay with that too. But it’s always those innocent size 2T t-shirts just hanging there on their racks in stores that stop me cold sometimes. I can’t help but reach and touch them…like time hasn’t passed right on by.

www.makeitspecial.com123-456-7890

Let us make your event unforgettable!

It starts when you receive the invitation in the mail—either your computer’s inbox or the one that your junk mail gets delivered to.

That complex social problem of being asked to a party.

Do you bring the host or hostess something? If so, what? Is wine too pretentious? Perhaps craft beer, or is that elitist? And what to wear? Is it a casual gathering or a dinner party where at least a sport coat is needed? Is it acceptable to add a plus-one, since you just started dating the potential man or woman of your dreams?

While modern-day society may no longer follow the dictates of Emily Post’s rules of etiquette, there’s nothing like a fete to throw many of us into an internal tailspin.

To help navigate the often frustratingly unclear rules of attending a party—be it cocktail, dinner or a child’s birthday—the following tips can help:

• Call to RSVP. The French may not have a corner on manners, but they do know respondez s’il vous plait, or please reply. This is essential for the host to get an accurate headcount. Not to do so, is considered rude and inconsiderate.

• Decode the dress. Is it a formal affair that require tuxes and dresses, or a more casual, anything goes party? If you’re unsure, it’s never inappropriate to ask the hostess.

• Go dateless. Unless specifically stated, it is considered impolite to bring an uninvited guest or to ask if you can bring another. If you can bring a date, remember to RSVP for them, or conversely, if you accepted for your guest, and plans change, let the host know that as well.

• Hold your liquor. While you may want to imbibe all the free-flowing alcohol, avoid drinking to excess. Nothing is more disrespectful and intolerable than a drunk party guest, particularly at more upscale affairs.

• Take what you need to feel comfortable. For some that’s a small bottle of aspirin to ward off a headache, a pair of more comfortable shoes discreetly hidden in the folds of a coat, an embroidered handkerchief rather than bulky tissue, or if you’re a smokeless tobacco user, something other than a spit cup or bottle.

Everyone knows heart health is vital. Yet, more than 600,000 Americans die of heart disease every year — or one in every four deaths — according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.By arming yourself with information about nutrition, fitness and lifestyle choices, you can reduce your risk for heart disease. From picking protein-rich foods that are low in saturated fat to snoozing for the optimal amount of time each night, here are some valuable tips to keep your ticker happy:*Get your protein from foods that are low in saturated fat. While a good steak or hamburger can be enjoyable, it is also high in saturated fat. Better choices are fish, poultry and nuts. If you want something even lighter, consider a protein shake. The Bowflex Body French Vanilla Fitness Shake (www.bowflexbody.com), for instance, offers 15 grams of protein per serving and a scant 1 gram of saturated fat. An added bonus is that these shakes activate the metabolism and help build muscle, burn calories and boost energy.*Put down the smartphone. In today’s world of 24/7 connectivity, it’s important to unplug from work, email and devices for at least an hour a day. This helps reduce stress, which is important for keeping your blood pressure and heart rate levels from going too high.*Get some rest. Experts recommend aiming for around seven to eight hours of sleep a night. Consistently getting too few or too many zzz’s can be unhealthy.*Move your body. A recent study from the University of Cambridge determined that inactivity is more dangerous to your body than obesity. There are limitless activities to get your heart pumping, such as walking, swimming or biking, to name a few. Looking for a workout you can do at home? The Bowflex TreadClimber (www.treadclimber.com) combines the motions of a treadmill, a stair climber and an elliptical for a comfortable low-impact workout that delivers high-impact results.*Free your inner social butterfly. Better yet, work out with a buddy to help keep you motivated and on track. Research shows that having a strong social network and spending time with others can help reduce blood pressure and other heart disease-related factors.“Even small steps, like adding one strength-training workout a week, can make a big impact,” says Tom Holland, Bowflex Fitness Advisor and “Beat the Gym” author. “Plus, the Internet is a great resource to find more tips and information.”For a good place to start, visit www.bowflexinsider.com.

Millennials want to see the world. According to a study by Boston Consulting Group, Americans ages 18-34 reported a greater desire to travel abroad by a 23 percent margin. While the economy rebounds, travel spending by this group is up.These 80 million young Americans crave authenticity and adventure in travel; they are socially and ecologically conscious and strive for a healthy lifestyle. International travel and cultural experiences are their top priorities. One great travel option is adventure cruising on an eco-friendly ship.Star Clippers’ soft-adventure, healthful activities and unique ports of call make this cruise line perfect for millennials. They can explore several different countries in one vacation on an authentic and comfortable tall ship. The intimate size of the ships — just 170 or 227 passengers — lends the feel of a private yacht. Special itineraries reach exciting destinations, including such exclusive events as the Cannes Film Festival and the Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez yacht regatta. Typical itineraries navigate the Caribbean in winter and Mediterranean in summer, visiting ports less traveled by large cruise liners. The atmosphere on board is relaxed. An open deck plan encourages guests to climb the mast for a panoramic view from the crow’s nest, relax in the bowsprit net or enjoy a cocktail on deck. Events like a pirate-themed party or sunrise yoga create a congenial milieu.Shoreside activities include historical and athletic pursuits. Water sports, including kayaking, paddle boarding and snorkeling, are popular. Other options for enjoying a day at port range from biking the hills of Croatia to kicking back at a quiet beach barbecue. For more information on Star Clippers itineraries and a virtual tour, visit www.starclippers.com.

When it comes to updating your home, it can be difficult to decide what to do, where to start and, most importantly, what will last over the long haul. Granite countertops that have been the trend? Passe. Faux painted walls? So yesterday (by the way, wallpaper is making a comeback). You get it.

Yet hardwood floors continue to withstand the test of time. They provide warmth and add classic beauty to even the most simple home.“Hardwoods are just easier, especially for people who have pets and kids,” Kevin Aycock, president of Kevin Aycock Homes in Atlanta, told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution in an interview. These days homeowners have a cornucopia of choices when it comes to installing hardwoods. With so many choices, however, it can be daunting trying to decide which hardwoods are right for your home.

However, most industry experts agree: Pre-finished beats unfinished, hands down.“Factory finishes can furnish up to 10 UV- and scratch-resistant layers, and offer a 20-year guarantee that on-site finishers can’t get close to,” Gary Mills of Fullerton Wholesale Flooring in Anaheim, California, told the Washington Post in an interview. To that point, engineered wood (also called veneers), which are made of three to five layers of wood laminated together, can be an affordable option that has all the comfort, warmth and classic feel of solid plank flooring. And because of cross-lamination, engineered floors are more stable and don’t expand and contract as much as solid wood. They can also be installed at any grade level, are typically less expensive than solid planks (engineered wood costs anywhere $3-$18 per square foot) and will last from 20 to 100 years depending on the thickness of the top veneer. While hardwoods aren’t indestructible, Mohawk Flooring is making it its mission to have its hardwood floors last as long as possible.According to Tammy Perez, Mohawk Flooring’s director of hard surface marketing, its new ArmorMax top coating, which is added to its premium laminate collection, enhances an already heavy-duty wear layer to all hardwood flooring.“Mohawk ArmorMax floors have all of the design options we love about hardwood—a variety of colors, widths and textures,” Perez said. “But ArmorMax finish is not a topical finish. It penetrates deep into the wood fiber, making it up to five times more resistant to wear than other extended finishes.”For more information, visit www.mohawkflooring.com.

Landscape &Gardening

How to Prep Your Lawn and Garden for AutumnAs autumn colors set in this season, make sure your all-important home and garden upkeep checklist is ready.

Although the lawn is often overlooked during the fall, it’s actually the perfect time to make sure everything is organized before the harsher winter elements take hold. Paul James, host of HGTV’s “Gardening by the Yard,” advises homeowners to start early – approximately six weeks before the first good freeze.

Here is a list of some of the tasks and items you should add to your fall checklist this year:

• Maintain the landscape. Tidy up the lawn, flowerbeds, bushes, gardens, etc. Remove unsightly foliage, dead stems, piles of leaves and other debris. Fluff your mulch with a rake so water can seep into the subsoil.

• Plant fall vegetables. Cool-season vegetable gardens can flourish with the right plants – lettuce, greens, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, turnips, potatoes and loads more. Imagine all the hearty stews and delicious soups you could make from scratch.

• Keep muscles relaxed, and stay hydrated. Don’t underestimate the fall sun. Summer may be over, but hours of gardening in the sun can still leave you exhausted, strained and parched. Remember to drink plenty of fluids, take breaks and stretch your muscles. If you suffer from backaches and muscle strains, keep some relief like Absorbine Jr. (www.absorbinejr.com) on hand. The natural menthol in Absorbine

Jr. helps relieve muscle and back pain to make it a must-have for yard work. Its herbal ingredients also help provide relief from sunburn and gnat and other insect bites.

• Make room for indoor plants. Your potted or container plants won’t survive the winter outside, so it’s time to make room indoors for tropical plants, herbs and succulents. Potted perennials can be transplanted into a garden after trimming the roots and some top growth.

• Clean garage, shed or outbuildings. Once you organize your storage space, you can neatly put away all of your summer tools or patio furniture. Plus, your newly emptied planters will have a home next to all the other stuff families accumulate.

Looking to spend more time out on your boat than stuck at the dock? Well, a new web app, which you can access from any mobile device and makes maintaining your boat a (summer’s) breeze, may help you do just that. The app, called MyTaskit, connects boat owners with service techs, offering a convenient way to communicate directly with boat yards about service appointments, repair jobs or routine maintenance — all of which means more time on the water and less on dry land.“There’s transparency around which tasks have been assigned to which people,” says Kevin Hutchinson, founder and CEO of MyTaskit. Whether the MyTaskit app is used on a mobile device or accessed via a desktop computer, “boaters can see the status of projects that are open, in progress, waiting authorization or estimate approval, or completed. The last thing you want to realize is that something needs fixing and you’re five miles off shore.”

New App Takes the Task Out of Boat Maintenance

When users post an online task on MyTaskit, they can explain any issue to a service pro; they can attach photos or videos to describe the problem, too.“Boats are complex possessions, with multiple moving parts that need frequent service and attention,” Hutchinson says. And even if your boat just needs a little TLC or maintenance, the app can come to the rescue. It conveniently stores manuals for everything on a boat, from its icemakers to its engines. Once you enter the specific type of engine your boat has, for instance, MyTaskit will automatically send a service reminder at manufacturer-recommended intervals. The app is free of charge to boat owners, captains and their crews, and includes up to 1GB of storage (owners can purchase more storage as needed). What’s more, the app is making waves in other ways. Got a problem with your plumbing or electricity at home? MyTaskit will soon be able to connect with those service providers for your home or even RV.“Because it’s highly task-oriented, MyTaskit can help people stay coordinated with all their service providers,” Hutchinson says. The ease-of-use extends beyond consumers to service professionals, who say the MyTaskit “Pro” side of the app helps them to coordinate business with their existing customers online in a manner that strengthens the bond and fosters greater customer loyalty. For more information, visit www.mytaskit.com.(NewsUSA)
