Greetings everyone.

Spring is on its way. Recently, I wasstacking logs and generally tidying thegarden. I had to be careful with my bigboots and wheelbarrow wheel not tocrush the rising new shoots ofsnowdrops, daffodils and hyacinths.Young growth is easily damaged, yeteven the ones I did tread on bymistake back in the new year havemiraculously recovered. Some of thewinter leeks had their tops blown offin all the stormy weather and they arenow throwing up new leaves. Such isthe miracle of nature. Things will growno matter what the weather brings.

For those of you still dealing with flooddamage, I hope everything sooncomes right. The long dark wet wintercan be an analogy for our spiritual livestoo. We all need a bit of light in ourlives to keep us cheerful and hopeful. Our Youth Café have lots to look

forward to: a localfarm visit to see thelambs, a moredistant activity farmvisit near Carlisle, acouple of barbecues,a few sleepovers, amurder mystery evening whichBarbara is organising (can’t wait as Ilove dressing up and acting) and, ofcourse, our extra meetings to YewTree Hall to play table tennis. LortonPCC, the Yew Tree Hall Committee andthe Adult Table Tennis Club know hownot to crush young lives – betweenthem they have provided us with tabletennis equipment, games, a gym mat,a table top football game and a fewsundries. I do thank all those who liketo nurture young people. You are anexcellent example of how toencourage teenagers.

God Bless always

Revd Sheila

1.The Rescue!Quite suddenly, without warning, the publishersof my book  ‘Lakeland-Walking with Wildlife’went out of business! Closed. Fini. Kaput. Panic--  was all that work going to be lost? Well, nearly, but not quite. In the nick of time, after alot of worry and hard work, it was rescued, inmemory stick format. Phew! And  better still, it has now been adopted byAustin Macauley of London and re-launched onthe  29th January, to be available frombookshops, Amazon, Waterstones, WHSmith,Blackwells, and Foyles. Ebooks may bepurchased via Amazon’s Kindle or throughSmashwords, while in a month’s time it will bereleased in the USA. And so  -  a close runthing, but all’s well that ends well.2. Brief Encounters. In contrast to recent weeks, we suddenly had adry and sunny morning with a cloudless sky; acold wind, but clearly an opportunity not to bemissed. So, the boots and the sack weregrabbed and off we go to make the most of it.Through Lanthwaite Wood and on along theeastern side of Crummock Water, the low andweak sun dancing acoss the Lake, a shimmeringdazzle playing over the rippling surface. The bracken, now a mass of rust contrastingstrongly with the dark green of the  gorsebushes, some of which still proudly displayingfestoons of golden blooms.Rounding a bluff, a pair of buzzards were takenby surprise, only a few yards away, a rareoccurence. They had been on the shore forsome reason, probably attracted by somecarrion, but upon our intrusion theyimmediately took flight. Their massive  wings, broad and long and deeply cambered formaximum lift, with slotted tips to smooth outturbulence and a wide tail to help stability, andof course to give that extra manoeverability sovital when in pursuit of prey. The distantpattern of light and dark plumage of theunderwing, so clearly seen at close quarters.Although taken by surprise, they wheeledaround overhead before disappearing over the

treetops, allowing time for binoculars to bebrought to bear to reveal much detail, if onlyfleetingly. One plaintive  ‘meouw’ of disapprovaland they were gone.On along the track, with a  number of old andtwisted trees bordering the water. One or twohad fallen through a combination of age and theinstability of the bank, adopting strange andcontorted positions, their reflections suggestingsome aquatic monster about to emerge andgrab an unfortunate passer-by! One ancient ashsported a trunk clothed in bark, deeply indentedin a diamond pattern. And so, with Melbreak in deep shadow acrossthe Lake, with the snow-sprinkled heights ofGrasmoor reaching for the sky on our left, andwith Rannerdale straight ahead, it was time fora break. A horizontal tree trunk obliginglypresented itself, and there we perched with asandwich and a particularly welcome cup ofcoffee, to the sound of the water lapping closeby. Never slow to take advantage of thepossibility of a free meal, a robin and a wrensoon joined us for the occasional proferredcrumb. The return along the same route was uneventfuluntil back in the wood itself, when there wasthe  always pleasurable encounter with atreecreeper. The usual mouselike movement asthe so-well camouflaged form hopped up a treetrunk, stopping now and then to insert itsneedle-like   downward curved beak intocrevices in the bark in the hope of extracting theodd insect.  It will climb up trees and along theundersides of branches, but will only rarelyventure downwards. That particular trick isperformed regularly only by the nuthatch. And so the walk came to an end and return to‘our own’ birds, which we do our best to keepwell-fed, especially at this time of year. Theresulting fat is essential to keep them warmthrough winter nights. The warmth is trappedamongst the fluffed-up feathers of their extra-thick winter plumage and gives them the bestpossible chance of surviving the long cold hoursof darkness.                Alan Gane.

LORTON NOTESEaster is early this year, but I alwaysfeel that the coming of Easter signifiesthat the year is well under way andthat warmer weather cannot be fardistant. As I write these Notes on acold January day, I am thinking aboutthe season of the Church's year whichimmediately precedes Easter, namelyLent, and am encouraged by thethought that perhaps spring is not faroff. In any case, Ash Wednesday isFebruary 10 and we shall be holdinga service in the evening. Ournominally frugal and immenselyenjoyable Lent Lunches will be takingplace, social gatherings frequented bymany other than regular worshippers. All proceeds go to church funds. Therewill be the usual Lent course, at whichall sorts of topics are discussed and ifyou have not been before I urge you togive it a try. Full details of the lunchesand the course will be foundelsewhere in The Link.

The rotas for coffee and flowers are atthe back of the church and it would benice if, before long, they were full. I'mafraid we have to rely on the same(very) few people week after week andwe would be grateful if others joinedthe band.Y-Club will be meeting as usual at theTennis Club on the second Sundayand the Youth Cafe at St. Cuthbert'son the last Friday. These groupsbetween them cater for children andyoung people from about five upwardsand all are very welcome. Finally, I'm sure everybody wassaddened when they heard of Sheila'scancer and we wish her a speedy andcomplete recovery.

LORTON WOMEN’S INSTITUTEJanuary 2016 Meeting

Numbers were depleted for the Januarymeeting (14 members and 1 guest) due toillness of members and partners. Ourthoughts were particularly with our Vicar,Sheila, and Morag, who are both havingoperations this week.President Kris led the business meeting, atwhich it was decided that our ChristmasParty had been one of the best yet and thatwe will try to book the same caterers andentertainment (which were both excellent)for next year’s party, with extra time forthe entertainers.Lil reassured us that our financial state washealthy and that 2016 subs of £37.50 arenow due. Many paid at the meeting and Lilrequested everyone else to pay at theFebruary meeting. She also gave us thegood news that we are hosting the GroupDarts competition on March 1st and wehope to field two teams again. MelbreakCommunities have asked us for volunteersto help run the monthly Coffee and Cakemorning along with other villageorganisations. Members signed up to helpand to bake for one or two sessions. Wehave had a leaflet regarding a BBC tour ofLook North in Newcastle. The Committeewill consider this with a possibility ofhaving a Summer outing. After several other business items, Krisintroduced Helen Faulds, the founder of alocal charity, PovertySwap. The charity is a

fairly low-key affair which complementslarger charities by linking local people inCumbria with local people in othercountries, offering practical solutions andsupport to some of the poorest people inthe world. Helen co-ordinates the sharingand distribution of skills, knowledge andresources world-wide, ensuring that 100%of all donations go directly to those inneed. Helen told stories of groups andindividuals who have been enabled toimprove their lives by setting up smallbusinesses and learning skills. Also, shetold heart-wrenching stories of childrenwho had benefited from items made andsent by Cumbrians. Currently she isworking with partners in Ethiopia, Nepal,India and Asia as well as Europe. Eleanorthanked Helen for her talk which, it wasagreed, had been interesting and thought-provoking.The meeting ended after our customarybite to eat and chat.Next month’s meeting is open to all localpeople (including partners) and visitors, who are offered a warm welcome, whenPaul Heslop will be giving a talk titled “A.Wainwright – A Life.” So come along tothe Yew Tree Hall on Tuesday, 9thFebruary at 7.15 for a great evening forthe many lovers of the Lake District inthe area and, of course there will be theusual delicious cake and good craic.

Brain of the BeneficeSadly no room for the brain teaser solution this month, 15 correct entries weresubmitted and the winner was John Hudson, Runners-up Ann and Roger Peck, VickeyDaly. The correct solution will be posted on www.melbreakcommunities.org.uk

Now that I’ve got the sellotape out of myhair, I’ll give this new laptop a go!When I say give it a go, I mean try todownload word etc onto it - I’ve managedor this would not be appearing. The hardest part was trying to remembermy password to get into my emailaccount, to verify I was me. This provedtoo hard, as I was not at home when tryingto do this, so was unable to access my verysafe hand written list of passwords. After15 minutes of trying every permutation Icould think of I suddenly remembered Ihave another email account. So I beganagain.Luckily I remembered the password forthat account and thanks to not being atmy house the download only took 3minutes!As a present for my sister for Xmas andher birthday I got tickets for the pair of usto go and see The Book of Mormon. It is amusical in the traditional sense of singing, dancing, pink sequins and jazz hands but italso has some offensively namedcharacters, and lots of swearing andinnuendo. It was hilarious and if you arenot easily offended I highly recommend it.I also bought tickets for Billy Connelly, inLondon (the only place he was playing). This was going to be a treat as growing up,we usually ended up watching my dadwatching Billy, rather than watching Billyourselves. He was very hairy, very sweary (I’d expectnothing less) and very funny. Throughstories from his youth through to hisillnesses he kept us laughing for twostraight hours. This is no mean feat giventhe amount of people who couldn’t wait

and were getting up and going to the looor the bar throughout the evening. I’venever understood why it is ok to do thiswhen it is comedy. You usually wouldn’tdream of going to the bar in the middle ofa play.At the start of the evening Billy told a storyof the night he went on stage with Lemmy. That got a cheer. Some of us were justabout getting the passing of Lemmy sortedout when we then lost David Bowie andAlan “Professor Snape/ Sheriff ofNottingham/ Hans Gruber/ ColonelBrandon Rickman in the same week.David Bowie once said he wasn’t arockstar, he was an entertainer. (He alsowasn’t a rockstar because he didn’t playrock music.) I wish he could have instilledthis thought into Kanye West who decidedat Glastonbury he was the greatest everrockstar (he’s a rapper). I’m not sure whatyou would class him as though, as I don’tconsider him entertaining either.Stargazing Live gave us a key list of datesfor astronomical sightings for the year. Or,nights when it will be particularly horribleweather and overcast!During a conversation at lunch about thefighting in the world a former army Privatetold us a story of being fined foraccidentally shooting a sheep. I asked howmuch, thinking £100 at most. She did notdisclose the exact amount but it was fourfigures! A third colleague then asked ifthat money went to the farmer. Shethought so. The temptation to buy 10sheep and herd them into the range atWarcop for minimum £1000 a sheep isvery tempting! The MOD would getsuspicious if I put more on and £10,000 isa nice little sum. Penny 7

Loweswater LadiesOur Christmas buffet held in Decemberat the Fish Hotel in Buttermere was agreat success, enjoyed by all membersand their guests who attended thatevening. We thank the staff at the Fishfor a delicious array of food and friendly, efficient service. We commenced our 2106 programme ofmeetings on Wednesday 13th January atthe Loweswater Village Hall. The roomwas packed with members and guestsand Alison welcomed two newmembers, Cherie and Madeleine. Shealso thanked Marjorie and Ann (Kyle) fortheir hard work in organising last year’svaried programme. This year has beenput together by Loes and Sheila (ourVicar). Two of our ladies, PaulineMarjorie volunteered to take over therole and prepare the programme for2017.Subscriptions were paid at this, our firstmeeting of the year. Once again, Pamhas managed to keep our contributionsto a modest £10. Many thanks! We were then entertained by afascinating talk from TimothyChittenden on his life and career in theRoyal Navy. Timothy illustrated his talkwith an interesting power pointpresentation, which added to ourunderstanding of his life as aSubmariner. His career commenced atUniversity and progressed to training atDartmouth. After rigorous practical SeaTraining, Timothy chose a naval careeras a Submariner, with a speciality innuclear engineering. He described someof the rigours of training, including

training at the ‘escape tower ’at HMSDolphin in Gosport. His audience wasspell bound as he described theexperience in this huge water filled tank!Nuclear training was undertaken atDounreay, and his first qualified postwas on the submarine HMS Revenge.Timothy explained the different types ofsubmarines and also the various types ofmissiles. He related many tales ofservice in and around the evacuation ofTurkey, during the Falklands War, andalso the attempted rescue of personnelaboard the Russian submarine Kursk.Eventually Timothy’s career’s reached apeak as he became a Rear Admiral.Since active retirement from the servicehe has been based as Chief Naval Officerat the shipyard in Barrow in Furness, which is currently involved in thebuilding of the Astute Class submarines. His presentation concluded with a seriesof slides showing just how crampedconditions are onboard the vessels, buthow well the personnel are looked afterduring their many days below the water, anything up to 120 days on a tour ofduty. We were well informed on a topicunknown to us all, a truly fascinatingevening. Our raffle, presented by Nancy, was wonby Pauline. We also signed up and choseour menu for our next meeting whichwill be our annual meal at the KirkstileInn on Wednesday February 10th, 7pmfor a 7.15pm start. Christine will beorganising the raffle.

Buttermere NotesOn December 27th we held the annualinformal service of carols and readingswith standing room only for some of thecongregation of over 70. Requests forfavourites came thick and fast and organistJohn Scadding rose to the occasion withaplomb. Readings, as usual, were manyand varied including one given by anannual visitor from near Penrith who, together with his wife, came early enoughto sit in a front pew. Other readingsincluded a piece in local dialect aboutFather Christmas (Betty); a delightful storyabout an elderly lady whose money hadbeen stolen but secretly replaced by kindpostmen (Barbara); a simple description ofsomeone who lived over 2000 years agoyet here we all are because of Him (Ann); apoem about taking down the Christmastree (Jan); T S Eliot’s poem ‘The coming ofthe Magi’ (Eleanor) and then we enjoyedSheila’s little granddaughter, Amelie, bravely singing ‘Twinkle twinkle little star’-wonderful! Afterwards, as usual, weserved sherry, juice, mince pies andshortbread, allowing people to chat andshare the festive mood. Comfort and joywas our message, both spiritual and

physical, so next year we will have morechairs available! In December, together with Lorton andLoweswater, Buttermere experienced an‘Archdeacon’s Visitation’. As fairly newChurchwardens we had not encounteredone of these before and felt somewhatdaunted.. The Ven Richard Pratt isArchdeacon for West Cumberland and isresponsible for over 100 churches whichhe visits in rotation to check that thechurchwardens are fulfilling their duties. There is a specific list of items that has tobe produced covering paperwork (logbook, faculties, equipment and electricalservicing reports, terrier, inventory, photosof silver and furniture, risk assessment andsafety policy, electoral roll, child protectionpolicy etc) registers (services, weddings, banns, baptisms, funerals, confirmations)buildings ( quinquennial report, futureplans, maintenance, budget, security) andfinancial ( accounts, stewardship, offer). Afew tweaks and some very helpfulsuggestions meant that our apprehensionswere unfounded. Richard’s love andknowledge of churches is infectious and heis there to assist and encourage.

‘Coffee and Cake’, launched by TheMelbreak Communities in 2011, hasbecome an extremely popular local eventeach month. The idea came from Cheryl and Ian Aitken, who live in Lorton, and they have decidedthat the March ‘Coffee and Cake’ will betheir last one at the helm. We areextremely grateful to them for all theirhard work and enthusiasm – as well as totheir very cheery team. .Although the event is not primarily aboutfundraising, surplus money has gone toseveral excellent causes which havebenefitted First Responders, the LortonAfter School Club, North East AirAmbulance and Cockermouth MountainRescue. As well as enabling people tomeet up and chat, ‘Coffee and Cake’ alsoprovides a great opportunity to publicise

other local activities, events andinitiatives, sell and share surplus produceand crafts and swap books and DVDs.A provisional list of ‘Coffee and Cake’dates throughout 2016 has been agreed(see the Yew Tree Hall calendar on TheMelbreak Communities website(www.melbreakcommunities.org)If you, or an organization you represent orbelong to, would like to find out moreabout hosting a ‘Coffee and Cake’ event in2016, please contact:Carolyn Davis, 01900 85708,[email protected] Poate, 01900 85265 [email protected]*We’ve already had an offer from theCockermouth Caravan Club to host theApril 16th nt (which will raise funds forCancer Research).
