EZCase™ bit after drilling 923 ft

EZLine™ Liner Drilling System

The fi rst liner drilling system with a drillable, performance-optimized PDC bit

Baker Oil Tools and Hughes Christensen collaborated with a major operator to test the effectiveness of Hughes Christensen’s EZCase™ bit to drill new formation.

Project Objectives

• Run EZCase bit on drillpipe

• Drill 700 to 1,000 ft of virgin formation with a target ROP of 20 ft/hr

• Retrieve EZCase bit for evaluation

Wellbore/Drilling Details

• 7-5/8 in. 33.7 lb casing set at 8,979 ft

• 6-1/2 in. EZC304 EZCase bit

Formation Information

• Unconfi ned compressive strength of formations was 10,000 to 15,000 psi

• Most of the formation drilled was shale, with a mix of sand

Job Results

• After 37 hours of total drilling time and 923 ft drilled, the EZCase bit was pulled from the wellbore

• Upon examination, all of the PDC cutters were intact with only minor wear patterns on the blades

• Maximum ROP of 68 ft/hr

• Average ROP of 24.9 ft/hr (exceeded target ROP by 24.5%)

EZLine™ ImplementationAfter the success of this test, the operator ran an EZLine™ liner drilling system on their next well. The wellbore details were the same as the test run and a 6-1/2 in. OD EZCase bit was deployed on a 2,676 ft 5-1/2 in. 17 lb Hydril 513 P-110 casing string. The liner drilling system started cutting through virgin formation and successfully drilled 677 ft. This section averaged a ROP of 12.5 ft/hr with some of the section being control drilled to optimize cuttings removal. The liner was released with the drop ball, the liner cemented, and setting tool tripped from the wellbore. This successful job allowed the operator to set casing across the trouble zones and drill the next hole interval without incident.

• 677 ft drilled in 54.5 hours

• Rotary speed range of 35 to 50 RPM

• 1,700 to 2,000 ft-lb surface torque

• Circulating 126 gpm at 1,150 psi

• 4 to 10,000 lb weight on bit

PDC Cutting StructureEach EZCase™ bit comes with a full PDC cutting structure. Set on either four or six blades, the use of PDC’s extends the application and performance range of casing/liner running operations.

Tapered Leading EdgeGauge design incorporates a tapered leading edge to reduce reactive torque and side cutting aggressiveness. This minimizes the chance of unintentionally sidetracking the wellbore.

Drilling Out with a PDCSummaryIn the past, the use of a full PDC casing bit required a dedicated milling trip to drill out the fl oat and casing bit before the next sec-tion could be drilled. Hughes Christensen’s Genesis® PDC bit with drillout features, together with the EZCase™ casing bit, combines the drillout run and next hole section into one operation.

PDC Drill Out ConceptA 12-1/4 in. EZCase bit and a 9-5/8 in. fl oat valve assembly were cemented in rock and drilled out with an 8-1/2 in. Genesis PDC bit with drillout technology. The PDC bit consists of two styles of cutting structure:

1. PathMAKER™ milling cutters perform the drillout operation.

2. The milling cutters wear down in virgin formation, thus exposing the traditional Genesis PDC cutting structure to continue with the next hole size.

The drillout bit successfully drilled through both the fl oat valve assembly and EZCase bit without damaging the PDC cutting struc-ture. The body of the EZCase bit along with its cutting structure was broken into fi ne particles, thereby allowing easy transporta-tion up the annulus.

ConclusionThe added performance and confi dence of using a premium EZCase casing bit is now enhanced by being able to drill the following hole section with a premium PDC bit.

Drilling through the EZCase™ casing bit with a PDC bit (debris from drill out shown on the right).

Case Study

Drill Out with Roller Cone or Custom PDC Drillout BitOne of the primary obstacles to utilizing a full PDC cutting structure is drilling out with a PDC bit. Utilizing PathMAKER™ milling technology, Hughes Christensen has developed a Genesis® PDC bit that can drill out fl oat equipment, the EZCase bit and drill on in the new hole size.

CFD Hydraulic AnalysisThe hydraulic effi ciency of the EZCase bit has been optimized through Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) analysis on the frame of the bit to maximize cooling, cleaning, and cuttings ejection.

Secondary Bypass PortBypass port allows normal circulation or cementing to continue in the event of nozzle plugging.

Custom ConnectionsThe increased torque requirement when drilling or reaming down is accommodated by casing connections being cut to customers’ requirements.

Getting Casing Strings to TD in Today’s Harsh Wellbore Environments Requires New SolutionsTeamwork between Baker Oil Tools and Hughes Christensen has created the EZLine™ liner drilling system, a highly effective solution to the problem of getting casing across tough and problematic zones. EZLine greatly reduces occurrences of stuck pipe, lost circulation, and losing hole sections. Both of these industry-leading Baker Hughes divi-sions have integrated best-in-class technologies into EZLine:

EZCase™ Casing Bit from Hughes Christensen enables greater drilling effi ciency than any other casing drilling system and eliminates the need for a dedicated milling trip. EZCase™ uses standard PDC cutting structures and is designed specifi cally to drill new hole. EZCase PDC cutters are mounted on a composite steel body strong enough to drill through problematic for-mations, yet it is still drillable with a milled tooth or custom PDC bit to gain the next hole section.

Liner Drilling System from Baker Oil Tools is designed around the capabilities of EZCase and fi eld-proven components of the Baker Oil Tools liner hanger system. EZLine delivers high torque in a slim profi le that eliminates the traditional liner hanger and packer. This increases annular area for cuttings removal and keeps debris from packing off around the top of the liner. EZLine incorporates a tieback extension on top of the liner if an isolation packer needs to be run as a secondary pressure barrier or problems occur with the primary cement job.

EZLine™ Liner Drilling System is a Highly Effective Way to Reach TD Through Problem Zones and Reduce Trouble Time When Conventional Methods Won’t Work

Double Valve Float CollarProvides wellbore control while

tripping in the hole and prevents cement from u-tubing.

Solo™ Pump Down PlugIncorporates four nitrile wiper fi ns on an aluminum body. Wipes the drillpipe from surface then latches into the Solo Plug liner wiper plug.

Drop BallReleases the HRD setting tool from the liner. Made of brass for straight wellbores and Bakelite for horizontal applications.

Lift Nipple with Junk CoverProvides a way to pick up liner assembly in elevators and set slips. Junk cover keeps cuttings and debris from falling inside of the tieback sleeve, which ensures that the liner will release from the setting tool.

PBR PackoffProvides a way to pack off and seal the workstring to the liner. Also acts as a secondary debris barrier.

HRD™ Liner Setting ToolProvides a way to run the liner into the hole and also transfer high torque from the workstring to the liner. Released with applied differential pressure across the tool, with a secondary mechanical backup.

Extrudable Ball Seat SubCatches the drop ball and allows pressure to be applied to HRD setting tool. After setting tool is released, applied pressure is increased and the setting ball extrudes without creating debris.

Solo™ Plug Liner Wiper PlugAccurately indicates when pump down plug latches into liner wiper plug so a more accurate displacement can be achieved. Comes with a ceramic insert to prevent washout during excessive pumping or while pumping large amounts of lost circulation material.

HRD™ Liner Setting SleeveProvides profi le for latching the HRD™

setting tool and also provides a tieback receptacle with a honed ID for the PBR

packoff. If needed, the tieback sleeve can be used to tie the well back to

surface with tubing or casing or for the installation of an isolation packer.

Type I Landing CollarProvides a means to latch the

Solo™ Plug liner wiper plug and give a positive indication when

cement displacement is complete.

ZXP™ Isolation PackerBaker Oil Tools drill-in liner system is fully compatible with the ZXP™ isolation packer assembly in case a primary cement job is not effective. Also acts as a secondary pressure barrier.

ZXP™ Liner Top PackerPatented ZXP liner top packer seals under high pressure and temperature in the most demanding wellbore environments. Standard service for many sizes is 10,000 psi and 400°F.

Contact your nearest Baker Oil Tools or Hughes Christensen representative and ask about the EZLine liner drilling system. And remember that EZLine comes with the unsurpassed resources and worldwide support of Baker Oil Tools and Hughes Christensen. EZLine is one more reason why the Baker Hughes team has the best record in the business.

Case HistoryDrillable Nozzles14/32 in., 16/32 in., or 18/32 in. ports allow optimization of H.S.I.
