    What is Lateral Thinking?

Lateral thinking is about reasoning that is notimmediately obvious

Ideas may not be obtainable by using only

    traditional step-by-step logic.

Techniques that apply lateral thinking to problemsare characterized by the shifting of thinking

patterns away from entrenched or predictablethinking to new or unexpected ideas.

    Blue Hat

The Blue Hat stands for process control.

This is the hat worn by people chairing meetings.

When running into difficulties because ideas arerunning dry, they may direct activity into Green Hatthinking.

When contingency plans are needed, they will askfor Black Hat thinking, etc.

    White Hat

With this thinking hat you focus on the dataavailable. Look at the information you have, andsee what you can learn from it.

Look for gaps in your knowledge, and either tryto fill them or take account of them.

This is where you analyze past trends, and try toextrapolate from historical data.

Look at it cautiously and defensively.

Try to see why it might not work. This is importantbecause it highlights the weak points in a plan.

It allows you to eliminate them, alter them, orprepare contingency plans to counter them.

    LINEAR THINKING LATERAL THINKING

Linear is straight line thinking Lateral is broad thinking

Linear starts at the problem and

works its way to the cause.

Lateral figures out what could be the

    cause and goes there.

Linear is organized. Lateral is unorganized.

Linear Thinking is based on logic,

    rules and rationality (or sustained

    reason) to solve a problem.

    Lateral Thinking instead focuses on

thought driven by a more indirect

    approach. It encourages one to

delve into more of a creative form of

    reasoning.

    Linear Thinking is analytical,

    sequential and highly focused.

    Lateral Thinking is discovery,

    exploration and spontaneity.

Linear Thinking is Safe Lateral Thinking requires an

    acceptable of risk and failure.
