Sapote OilAncient Origins, Medical Use and Cosmetic Characteristics

Pouteria sapota is a species of plant native to Central America, and is especially widespread in Mexico and the Dominican Republic. Belonging to the family Sapotaceae, its cultivation has ancient origins among pre-Columbian civilizations and in all countries bordering on the Caribbean Sea. Inside this delicious fruit is a large glossy black seed which, when cold pressed, produces a tasty oil with a characteristic aroma of cherries and almonds.

In the western world, we have sought scientific rea-sons. Clinical tests conducted in 1970 at the Univer-sity of California in Los Angeles confirmed that due to its organoleptic composition, sapote seed oil is in-deed effective in stopping hair loss, particularly when caused by seborrheic dermatitis. Clinical studies have identified the active ingredients that promote this healing effect: Squalene, which retains moisture in the skin and protects it from chapping and oxida-tive stress, Beta-Carotene and Tocopherol, vitamins A and E, and above Triterpene alcohols and acids that provide a specific healing action and oxygena-ting effect on the skin. The secret lies in reactivating blood microcirculation in the follicles, providing an overall state of health and beauty to the hair.

80% of respondents considered themselves satisfied with the treatment and inclined to reusing it. After 1 month of treatment, hair becomes stronger and more nourished. Moreover, the subjects reported improvements in terms of the overall health, suppleness, volume and combability of their hair.

Laboratory Tests

CONSUMER TEST: The treatment’s effec-tiveness was ascertained in vivo through user tests. For this purpose, 30 heteroge-neous subjects were chosen (both male and female) with brittle, weak hairthat is easily broken and prone to hair loss. After a tre-atment on ‘difficult’ hair lasting a period of 30 days, the subjects replied to specificque-stions which were subsequently evaluated according to statistical parameters. Results showed that 8 out of 10 individuals found the fortifying trichology treatment effective in treating weakened hair tending to falling out, thus confirming the results obtained in the laboratory.

Effectiveness tests have shown that, according to results obtained in a laboratory environment, I Provenzali Sapote oil organic product line is an effective fortifying treatment for weak hair, demonstrating after only a few washings and through continuous use of thetreatment that:

• flaking of the scalp is dramatically reduced

• the structure of the hair fiber is improved

These conclusions are the result of studies conducted through specialized laboratories with the participation of a significant sampling of volunteers, selected among people with negative skin conditions, as well as a subsequent laboratory morphological hair trial.

MORPHOLOGICAL TESTS: Conducted through a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and developed in two phases: one prior to the treatment, in which the hair is scanned to assess the alteration of the cu-ticle; a second scanning at the end of the treatment cycle, aimed at observing the effective improvement of the hair’s health condition.

We can thus note how, in samples analyzed at time zero (T0), i.e. before the treatment, which showed signs of distress characteri-zed by an ‘open’ position of the protective cuticle, after 12 cycles of application of I Provenzali Sapote oil organic line (T12, ap-prox. 3 weeks), the hair fiber demonstrably showed improvements and a more uniform structure.
