VINCENT AND THE END OF THE WORLD

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

Making a comedy about suicide in a country with one of the highest suicide rates in Europe sounds somewhat harsh.

Of course it’s much more than that. Vincent is a dramatic story with a funny edge and deals with both life’s joys and its disappointments, with its fears and its hopes. Its base is a feeling of unease, restlessness, lack of vision and future almost inherent with living and growing up in the world today.

This takes us on a journey, both inward and outward, both in narrative and in the making. But foremost I’d like to think it’s realistic and I ended up putting more of myself into this film then I could have anticipated.

THE DIRECTOR

Christophe Van Rompaey cut his teeth directing with a handful of shorts and Flemish comedy series such as HALLELUJA and TEAM SPIRIT.

His feature film début MOSCOW, BELGIUM proved a commercial success in Flanders and a hit with festivals, winning 3 awards at the 2008 Cannes Critics’ Week. It went on to win fifteen awards at festivals. The film was released in a number of territories including France, Germany and the United States, where it earned a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Christophe subsequently directed the acclaimed drama LENA (2012), which nabbed awards at the Les Arcs and Fantasporto festivals. He also directed the popular mini-series VOOR WAT HOORT WAT (2014) for national television.

VINCENT AND THE END OF THE WORLD is Christophe’s third feature film and his second collaboration with writer Jean-Claude van Rijckeghem.

VINCENT is a 17-year old ecologist who drives his family crazy with his attempts to reduce their carbon footprint.

Vincent‘s giddy French aunt NIKKI takes him on a trip to France, convinced that the boy‘s obsession is related to his suffocating mother. But on their road-trip, Vincent proves to be much more than Nikki can handle.

SCARRED HEARTS

During the summer of 1937, Emanuel, a young man in his early 20ies, is committed to a sanatorium on the Black Sea coast for treatment of his bone tuberculosis.

The treatment consists of painful spine punctures that confine him to a plaster on a stretcher-bed.

Little by little, as Emanuel gets accustomed to the sadness of his new life, he discovers that inside the sanatorium there is still a life to be lived to

the fullest. He makes friends and engages in conversations, political for the most part. He reads, he writes, he smokes and drinks, interacts with doctors, nurses and stretcher-bearers. He observes how healing seems to be happening transiently, following mysterious laws: some patients get better, some worse, others die.

He even has a romantic relationship, while outside Romania doesn‘t have much to offer him, turning more and more into an extreme right-wing society...

BASED ON MAX BLECHER‘S AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL NOVEL; CONSIDERED BY WORLDWIDE CRITICS “A MASTERPIECE” OR “LOST CLASSIC”

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

Though it is probably normal for an author to explain his work, I find it extremely difficult. That is because I set off with many intentions and have no idea how many of them came to fruition.

Because I would like the viewers to discover the essence of this film on their own, to discover its qualities (if any) and criticize its faults, to find its meanings, its humour and its poetry.

I will only say that it is a love letter to M. Blecher’s literature. And an invitation for the public to read his books, if only to have grounds to say “the book is much cooler than the film”.

THE DIRECTOR

Radu Jude (1977) graduated from the filmmaking Department of Media University in 2003. He worked as an assistant director and directed a series of short films among The Tube with a Hat (2006) (winner of more than 50 international prizes in Sundance, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Uppsala) and Alexandra (2007).

His debut feature film THE HAPPIEST GIRL IN THE WORLD (2009) was awarded the CICAE prize in Berlinale Forum in 2009. In 2011 he directed and produced the independent feature A FILM FOR FRIENDS. EVERYBODY IN OUR FAMILY (2012), his second feature film, which premiered in Berlinale Forum, received the Heart of Sarajevo Film Festival Award, Le Bayard d’Or for Best Film and Best Actor at Namur IFF, CinEast IFF Grand Prix, and was selected by more than 30 film festivals around the world.

His two recent short films SHADOW OF A CLOUD (2013) and IT CAN PASS THROUGH THE WALL (2014) were selected in Cannes Quinzaine des Realisateurs section. The latest was awarded with a Special Mention.

THE INVISIBLES

Berlin, February 1943: The NS regime declares the Reich’s capital “free of Jews.” At this point in time, 7000 Jews have succeeded in going underground. Almost 1700 will survive the horrors of the war in Berlin. The Invisibles (WT) tells the stories of four of these contemporary witnesses.Hanni Lévy, who has just turned 17, has lost both of her parents. Thanks to her dyed, blonde hair, she is practically invisible to her pursuers, and strolls along the Ku’damm to pass the time away.Cioma Schönhaus has also gone underground and leads an adventurous life that consists of buying a sailboat, dining in Berlin’s best restaurants,

and becoming a forger of passports, through which he saves the lives of dozens of other Jews. And while Eugen Friede joins a resistance group that distributes anti-government leaflets, Ruth Arndt and a friend dream about life in America during the daytime; at night, she pretends to be a war widow and serves black-market gourmet foods in the apartment of an NS officer. The dramatic re-enactments are supplemented with impressive interviews with the actual people whose lives inspired this film. The two levels blend together into an intensive, emotionally moving feature film.

THE HAPPY PRINCE

This great man of letters is now a superstar on the skids. We are taken on a final nocturnal ramble through Paris. Totally inebriated Oscar falls off a table at a Varieté. In bed, dying, the past floods back. We immerge into the great love stories of Oscar Wilde, notably his relationship to Lord Alfred Douglas which, observed under the microscope of death, is revealed for what it really is – a passionate affair based on snobbery. And yet, through the smoky fumes of cigars and absinthe, appears a twinkle of love: Robbie.

Sternly devoted to Oscar like no other friend before. Oscar’s visions intensify. Past scenes of passion, ignorance and humiliation are reviewed in his minds eye. By now, Oscar’s brain has flickered into oblivion, the spectres of memory haunt him: His wife Constance, who he failed miserably and who still loves him, his sons, ashen and unforgiving, and at last Jesus Christ. Oscar tries to encounter suffering with irony and desperately performs the tragedy of his life to the very end.
