At Purdue University, I have taught (or co-taught) the following courses in addition to a number of directed study courses for undergraduate and graduate students. AGR 122: Introduction to Natural Resources and Environmental Science, Fall 2017 and ongoing This course serves as the required introductory course for students enrolled in pre-Environmental Studies and the Natural Resources and Environmental Science major. Students are introduced to the different environmental sciences majors on campus, taken on lab tours, and given a general orientation on how to be successful in college. FNR 198: The Nature of Wild Things, Fall 2013-2016 This course is a learning community for first year students in the department. Students were introduced to campus, the department and the community. They engaged in numerous activities related to natural resource stewardship with staff and faculty in the department. This course was co-taught with four other colleagues.

NRES 198: Environmental Sciences Learning Community, Fall 2017 and ongoing This course is a learning community for students interested in the environment. Students engage in a series of environmental activities, such as water sampling, power plant tour, hiking, canoeing, and a green tour of campus.

NRES 200: Careers Planning, Spring 2018 and ongoing This course is a required course for NRES majors. It covers basics of careers planning such as resumes and elevator pitches. Students also hear from a diverse set of alumni.

FNR 408: Natural Resources Planning, Spring 2004-2010 This was the undergraduate capstone course in the department. When I taught this course, students worked in small teams to write landscape level plans for ongoing watershed or landscape level projects in Indiana including the Upper Iroquois River Basin, the Great Bend of the Wabash River, and the Brown County Hills area. At the end of the semester, students presented their ideas to community members through an interactive poster session.

FNR 470: Fundamentals of Planning, Fall 2010-2017 and ongoing This one credit undergraduate course introduces students to key concepts of planning such as the rational comprehensive planning model, zoning, conservation easements, and stakeholder involvement.

FNR 488: Global Environmental Issues, Fall 2016 This three credit class was completely “flipped”, i.e. there were no lectures in the classroom. Students watched videos and completed readings before they came to class. In class, they participated in activities. The class focused on understanding environmental issues as they affect different parts of the world.

FNR 498: Watershed Planning/Plan Evaluation, Spring 2012-2013 After I was no longer responsible for FNR 408, I offered this course for students in the Natural Resources Planning and Decision Making major. The course was very similar to the description above for FNR 408 but the enrollment was much lower.

FNR 572/573, Community Involvement in Natural Resource Management, Fall 2006, Spring 2008, Fall 2009-2013, Spring 2015-2016 FNR 572 was a two credit course that covered the role of public participation in natural resource management and different techniques for ensuring quality input. FNR 573 was a one credit companion course in which students implemented some of their learning to help the community; this was usually in the form of organizing and facilitating a public meeting for a local watershed organization.

FNR 580: Research Methods for Natural Resource Social Scientists, Spring 2009, 2010; Fall 2013-2015, Fall 2017 This graduate level research methods course covers fundamental concepts such as theories and paradigms that are essential precursors to designing sound research; how to articulate clear research questions and testable hypotheses; differences between different research designs; issues of validity and reliability; quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods; and how to write a research proposal.

FNR 598R: Regional Land Use Planning, Fall 2004-2005 This course covered diverse concepts of regional land use planning with an emphasis of environmental issues.

FNR 598/AGRY 598: Ecological Footprints, Spring 2010 This course was co-taught with Dr. Laura Bowling in Agronomy. Students conducted a semester long service learning project to enable the future development of an interactive website that residents of Tippecanoe County can use to quantify their stormwater footprint, carbon footprint and backyard habitat value. Parts of this website have subsequently been developed and can be seen at www.tippeconow.com.

NRES 420: Internship Reporting, Spring 2018, Fall 2018 and ongoing This one credit course allows students to report on an internship or research experience through structured activities.

NRES 498/FNR 498/FNR 598: Climate Change Policy: From Global to Local, Fall 2019 This course explored how various economic, social, cultural, and political mechanisms impact the problem of climate change. Various policies at different levels from global to national to state to local were discussed. Students worked in groups to come up with solutions for Purdue and the Greater Lafayette community.
