LINCOLN THEATRE CENTER FOUNDATION
Transcript of LINCOLN THEATRE CENTER FOUNDATION
A focal point for community gatherings, the Lincoln Theatre offers year-
round activity including art house, independent, and foreign language films,
local theatre productions, events that celebrate the area’s cultural heritage,
community-based presentations, live performances, and more. The Art Bar
gallery shows the work of local artists year-round.
The Lincoln is a 490-seat theatre, built in 1926 in downtown Mount
Vernon. Dating from the “heyday” of movie palaces, it is a significant ar-
chitectural element in the downtown community. The Lincoln continues to
draw attention with its original Spanish-Moorish style architecture with
original murals, proscenium, and Mighty Wurlitzer pipe organ. It is listed
on the State and National Registers of Historic Places. The Lincoln serves
as a downtown Mount Vernon landmark and draws audiences from a popu-
lation of about 120,000 in Skagit County and over 400,000 in the Northwest
Washington region.
The theatre is owned by the City of Mount Vernon and is leased by the
Lincoln Theatre Center Foundation for $12 per year. The Lincoln Theatre
Center Foundation operates Mount Vernon’s Lincoln Theatre and is
responsible for preservation and maintenance of the historic space (from the
walls in) as well as the theatre operations and programming.
The Lincoln Theatre Center Foundation was founded in 1987 and has
IRS 501(c)(3) nonprofit, tax-exempt status as well as Washington State
nonprofit corporate status. Without participation from the City of Mount
Vernon, the Lincoln Theatre Center Foundation would not be able to keep
the facility open and serving the community.
The Lincoln Theatre is able to fulfill its mission in the Skagit community
thanks to the support of a broad community: individuals, foundations,
governments, and businesses. The Lincoln is operated by a small staff and
a large cadre of volunteers, including a Board of Directors who dedicate
themselves to the Lincoln’s success and its important role in community
life.

Lincoln Theatre Center
Foundation’s Mission
To entertain, inform and
inspire our diverse community
through cinema, live
performance and educational
programs while preserving
the historic Lincoln Theatre.
Attendance
In FY 2014, nearly 19,000 people
purchased tickets for films and
events at the Lincoln Theatre. An
estimated 7,000 people attended free
events at the Lincoln, such as com-
munity events and school day play
performances.
Movies (weekly as well as special
showings) 43 films with more than
155 film showings brought in 9,938
people. This year’s films included a
wide variety: 12 Years a Slave, The
Book Thief, Blue Jasmine, Philo-
mena, Gravity and Nebraska to
name a few.
Live Events (such as International
Guitar Night, Tingstad & Rumbel
and Celtic Yuletide) 9 events had
2,189 in the audience.
HD Broadcasts (such as Met
Opera in HD and NT Live) had 46
showings engaging 2,154 people.
Rental Events (such as TAG’s
Willy Wonka, META’s The Out-
siders, and visiting music events
like The Wailin Jennys and Ana Po-
povic) 34 rental dates brought in
more than 7,079 people.
LINCOLN THEATRE PROGRAMS
Lincoln Theatre presentations vary as we meet the diverse interests of our
community. Every week of the year we have multiple offerings, including:
Weekly & Specialty Film Showings–
Films have been the backbone of Lincoln
offerings for more than eight decades.
Films have a devoted audience including
many Lincoln members. Film showings
include independent, art house, and
foreign language films, making the
Lincoln the only theatre regularly
presenting such films between Seattle
and Bellingham.
HD Broadcasts - the Lincoln Theatre
is very fortunate to participate in HD
broadcasts of opera, theatre and music
from around the world. The Met: Live in
HD from New York continues to
delight audiences with world-class
operas. National Theatre Live from
London brings our region spectacular
theatre productions of outstanding quality.
HD broadcasts utilize up-to-date sound and projection systems to bring a
world of internationally acclaimed performing arts into the community by
satellite. The Lincoln is expanding this technology to offer additional HD
experiences showcasing art forms such as dance and rock n roll. This form
of “alternate content” is the wave of the future and the Lincoln Theatre was
the first venue north of Seattle to present this new form of entertainment.
Live Performances - Live
events bring renowned regional,
national, and international artists
to the area. The Lincoln selects
these acts to complement the
intimate and warm atmosphere
of the 490-seat theatre, taking
advantage of the excellent
acoustics of the theatre’s shoe
box construction.
Arts in Education and
Community Events - Educa-
tion and community events work
to expand the audience for
cultural events in the Northwest
Washington region, and educate
younger audiences about the performing arts. Community organizations,
the Mount Vernon School District and the City use the Lincoln for a
variety of community events on topics of general interest and community
celebrations.

Greetings
from the Executive Director:
I am very thrilled to share my enthusiasm for the Lincoln Theatre and its place in the community with so many
like-minded individuals. Thank you so much for the support you have given to me over the years and, in turn,
your support for the vision of the Lincoln Theatre Center Foundation.
Since 1926 the Lincoln Theatre has been a fundamental part of this community. It has brought people together
through the best of times and the worst of times. It has survived a World War, economic depression, and a few
natural disasters. It has celebrated technological changes from carbon arc 35mm film to all digital projection.
It has stood the test of time. Thanks to a forward thinking community, back in 1987, the Lincoln Theatre Center
Foundation was formed to preserve the theatre’s rich past and to ensure that the viability of the theatre’s pro-
gramming would continue well into the future.
Whatever the reasons our members and patrons come to the theatre, be it for films, live theatre, concerts or com-
munity events they all leave with a sense of the history of this old building. Whether you are a regular patron or
an occasional visitor I’ve found that all of our guests feel this connection with the past.
The support that our widespread community has shown is heartening, as successful campaigns for restoration
and technological improvements have been closely tied to our ability to move the theatre into the future. But even
with the current strength and stability of the organization and the extensive support for the theatre there is a deli-
cate balance to be maintained. I will do my best to preserve that balance and I’m counting on you, our members,
to ensure that I do.
Roger Gietzen
Board
The Board of Directors upholds the mission of the Theatre, formulates the
Foundation’s strategic plan and assures the organization’s financial
integrity and solvency. The Board takes on the planning and execution of
fundraising events such as Brewfest and Producers Night. They oversee
governance, sponsorships, and other aspects that are integral to the health
of the Theatre.

Staff Executive Director:
Roger Gietzen
Roger joined the staff of
the Lincoln Theatre in
September, 1999 after a
two-year stint as a
volunteer. He was first
attracted to the Lincoln
because of its varied film
and arts programming after moving to the
Skagit Valley from Seattle in 1993. There
was simply no other place like it in the area.
He continues to be amazed by the support of
our dedicated staff, volunteers, board of
directors and the community as a whole.
Bookkeeper: Peggy
Erickson
Peggy takes care of the
theatre’s books and
banking, produces
financial and event reports
and handles all accounts
payable. Peggy joined the
staff in November, 2006.
Admin. Assistant &
Volunteer Coordinator:
Tobie Fehr
Tobie assists with event
marketing and member-
ship renewals and she
enlists volunteers for
Lincoln Events. Tobie
joined the Theatre staff in
October of 2013.

VOLUNTEERS
More than 250 people volunteer at
the Lincoln Theatre each year.
They fill roles as varied as ticket
sellers, ushers, concessions and bar
staff, membership and cleaning.
There is a corps of volunteers
who regularly work in specific are-
as or on a particular night of the
week that really form the backbone
of the Lincoln Theatre’s volun-
teer program. Chances are, when-
ever you visit the Lincoln, you’ll
be helped by a volunteer or two—
the Theatre couldn’t operate with-
out them.
There’s even a volunteer, Stassya
Pacheco, who gives the pre-Opera
talks to help our audiences get eve-
rything they can out of the Met in
HD operas.
In FY2014, volunteers shared over
4,000 hours of their time to make
your experience at the Lincoln
more rewarding and fun!
All these volunteers are an
essential element in the success
the Lincoln Theatre enjoys. They
are evidence of the love that the
community has for the Lincoln and
the importance that it holds in our
loyalties.
We are grateful for the time and
energy Lincoln volunteers give!
Shannon Good and Noelle Eschete offer great customer service
Concession volunteers (like the group pictured, above) serve the wonder-
ful popcorn, drinks, candy, cookies, and trailmix before the shows and
during intermissions. They are the friendly faces that Lincoln patrons see
most often (staff are friendly, too—there’s just not as many staff as vol-
unteers). Volunteers help the Lincoln in countless ways, not least of
which is sharing their love of the Lincoln with their friends and family.
A dozen or so volunteers take posters around the area once a month or
more. We deliver posters to 100+ sites around the county and into Island,
Whatcom, and Snohomish County as well!
Busy Concessions Stand!
Ticket Office Volunteers
One of the many special features of the Lincoln
Theatre’s operations is the dedicated support of
ticket office volunteers, who run the box office
every weekday afternoon. These volunteers sell
tickets, rent videos, and provide information to
callers and visitors coming into the office. They
work 5-hour shifts, so you can imagine how
many hours they provide over a year! Some of
them work extra shifts for the Operas, National
Theatre Live, or the live performance shows. They are vital to the Lincoln,
allowing this nonprofit theatre to run on a limited staff. The board and staff
members especially thank:
Lynn Anderson Tom Lynn Bev Rudd
Diane Sherman Richard Treston David Clark
for their hundreds of hours of service!
Bev Rudd
The Lincoln: a
community asset · People who live in the area use the
theatre as a prized place to take out-
of-town friends and family.
· Tourists and visitors are excited by
the Lincoln, stopping in for tours of
the building when the visit Mount
Vernon. The Lincoln Theatre is a
year-round tourist destination that
stimulates spending in local shops,
restaurants, hotels, motels and other
service businesses.
· The theatre is a downtown Mount
Vernon anchor that embodies the
spirit of main street America.
· The Lincoln is a rare national
treasure. Only 2% of theatres built
during the golden cinema age
(1920’s-1940’s) still exist in the
U.S.
· Rarer still, the Lincoln has its
original pipe organ in place and in
regular use (see page 7).
· The theatre provides a safe,
inviting, and intimate social meeting
place for the Skagit community.
· The theatre attracts patrons from
Vancouver, BC to Portland, OR and
beyond.
· With all the volunteer and
community support, some people
are surprised to learn that it takes
nearly $500 a day to operate the
theatre.
After meeting with the Lincoln Thea-
tre Center Foundation board and
staff earlier in the year, Team Ripple
Effect members Megan Anderson,
Mellissa Beaton, Allice Collingwood,
Bekki Cox and Libby Grage decided
that a remodel of the Lincoln Thea-
tre dressing rooms, green room, and
Administration Office was sorely in
need, and a great project for Lead-
ership Skagit. While the façade, au-
ditorium and public places of this 88
-year-old historic theatre have all
been restored over the years, little
has been done to improve the spac-
es used by performers, both local, national, and international, and the Lin-
coln staff and volunteers. Just this past week we hosted an event with 90 of
our local elementary school performers, many of whom have never been in a
building as historic and ornate as the Lincoln, utilizing these spaces. Combine
those numbers with staff, crew and volunteers and it can get pretty crowded
and uncomfortable. Upon completion of this project we’ll have the privacy
and accommodations these young performers need and deserve. Team Rip-
ple Effect rounded up donations and materials to fund the project and made
contacts with local businesses and professionals to get the work done. Volun-
teers and staff also lent a hand with demo and construction. Our main dress-
ing room is now a beautiful place to enjoy. The performers can relax in a
peaceful setting away from the stress and chaos of a typical theatrical pro-
duction, built from the ground up with new framing, drywall, electrical, paint,
lights, mirrors and furniture. The room is, in every detail, a welcoming and
professional space. As a bonus, Team Ripple Effect is presenting a new floor
plan and facilities plan to help inspire us to continue with our backstage im-
provements in the coming months.
Thank you Team Ripple Effect and Leadership Skagit,

Members Make the Difference
At the end of the 2014 fiscal year, the Lincoln Theatre had more than 700
members. Membership levels ranged from $20 to $1000 this year.
Membership benefits included:
· $2 off all regular run films and Lincoln Theatre produced events,
including HD broadcasts
· First chance ticket pre-sales for selected live events
· Monthly calendar of events and weekly updates emailed to all members
(unless a paper copy is requested, which we mail to those members.)
· 7-day rentals for $2 from our one-of-a-kind video library
· 10% discount at participating local businesses
Membership contributions are tax deductible as allowable by law.
Members also enjoy ‘Member Mondays,’ which are part of our regular
Monday film showings. This program offers a chance to thank our
members with “bottomless popcorn” for $3.00, and a drawing for gift
certificates and Lincoln merchandise.
In 2014, memberships accounted for about 8% of the Foundation’s in-
come. This support is essential to operating the theatre, providing the
wherewithal to offer the fine programming and films we do!
The Wurlitzer
The original Mighty Wurlitzer Pipe
Organ, one of only a few such fully
functional organs remaining in their
original location, is played by
volunteer organists before films.
The organ , built to accompany
silent films, has a full set of sound
effects in the rafters above and
areas around the stage. These
include a full piano, drum set,
xylophone, slide whistle, telephone
bell and other expressive sounds.
Did You Know? Memberships to the Lincoln Theatre
is a critical source of operating funds,
ensuring ticket prices remain
reasonable and the historic theatre is
maintained. Operating support is
difficult to obtain through grants;
therefore, your membership dollars
keep the Lincoln strong!

Thanks
to our many supporters:
Brewfest (August 2014)
Thanks to a very supportive community, the historic Lincoln Theatre’s Twelfth annual Brewfest fundraiser, on Saturday, August 9th in downtown Mount Vernon was another great success. Hundreds of folks came out on a luminous summer day to support the Lincoln while tasting local craft beer, enjoying the music of the Margaret Wilder Band, Mary McPage and the Assassins and the Chris Eger Band, and sampling the food from Random Acts of Food, Judy’s Lunch Box and downtown’s finest restaurants. Thank you to our generous sponsor: Northwest Brewer's Supply, and in-kind donations from: Westar Solu-tions, Skagit Cycle, KAPS/KBRC and KISM, Walton Beverage, Commercial Cold Storage, The Chrysalis and Heron Inns, Seeds Bistro, Sam’s Auto Detail. Eaglemont golf course, The Loft and, of course, all of the magnificent breweries. We are grateful to The Porterhouse, Empire Ale House, Trumpeter Public House, Skagit State Bank, Rick Starr of the Rockfish Grill, and the Mount Vernon Downtown Association for their helpful assistance and finally the City of Mount Vernon, MV City Council, MV Parks and Rec-reation and MV Streets Division for their valuable time and support. Special thanks to our downtown business neighbors for their tolerance and support of this great community event. See you next year at the new pedestrian plaza park on the redeveloped revetment!
Producers Night (November 2013)
The Lincoln Theatre’s annual Producers Night 2013, Friday, November 15. This very special evening benefited the Lincoln Theatre and its dra-matic partners, META Performing Arts and Theater Arts Guild. This year’s event theme was the film The Artist and featured both a live and silent auction, hors d'oeuvres & desserts by Max Dale’s, wine and beer, available scotch flights, dancing, a costume contest and more! Producers Night was held at Hillcrest Lodge in Mount Vernon.

Special events such as the Brewfest (right) help to keep
the Lincoln Theatre’s doors open, the lights on, and the
fun coming! After a busy fiscal year 2013 raising funds
for our Digital Campaign, 2014 events included the
aforementioned Brewfest and Producers Night, our annu-
al fundraisers.
Thanks to all who helped bring these great events to
fruition!

What will happen to the Net Income?
Net Income will be placed in reserve to meet any shortfalls the theatre
experiences and be drawn on in special circumstances. A common goal in
nonprofit management is to have 3—6 months of operating reserves. While the
Lincoln is far from that goal, we are pleased to have a fund that could allow us to
take advantage of opportunities that may arise and protect the theatre should we
experience some negative, unforeseen occurrence.

Notes to the 2015 Budget
After joining the board earlier this year, I am quickly getting up to speed on Lincoln Theatre finances. The fiscal year ending June 30th, 2014 went relatively well and gives us confidence that we can meet our budget for next year.
Revenue:
The 2015 Event Revenue for the Theatre is based on annualized projections using actual revenues through the spring of 2014. Overall, we expect to build on success in the area of Live Events and Films, moving these budget categories slightly higher, while lowering our expectations for Broadcasts. We also projected gains in Rentals and Concessions, although these were less impressive, so our budget increase is more re-strained.
The biggest change to Sponsorship/Fundraising Income comes in the combination of Membership income with Individual Contributions. While Membership income came in above the budgeted amount, the Board felt that the Individual Contributions category overlapped significantly with the contributions made by renewing members and decided combining the categories would most accurately track our member support. Overall, we expect sponsorships and fundraising to remain flat, relying on increased event revenue to support a slight-ly higher 2015 budget.
Expense:
The 2015 Event Expenses for the Theatre is based in the same thought process as the corresponding in-come categories. Thus, the changes in the different categories correlate quite closely with our revenue ex-pectations—higher expenses for Live Events and Films, while pulling back on spending for Broadcasts.
Development, Marketing, and Administrative Expenses have all been held relatively flat for 2015, as actual costs came in close to the 2014 budget. The Maintenance line item includes normal wear and tear expenses along with deferred expenses from years past.
The actual results in the Administrative Payroll category were much lower than the original budget; unfortu-nately, this was due to Executive Director medical leave, which is not our preferred way to save money. We were able to provide for wage increases and bonuses in the 2014 fiscal year, giving even larger bonuses than budgeted as staff stepped up during medical leave. With the Development Director position currently vacant, the actual results during the 2015 fiscal year will also likely come back below budget.
The 2015 Fiscal Year budget shows a balanced budget without any money allocated to a Reserve Fund. We believe that this is a conservative budget and would expect that any gain realized would be put toward a Re-serve Fund for future emergencies or shortcomings.
