Over the years, one of the major restraints in ostomy surgery has been occurrence of immediate dehydration after ostomy surgery. The complexities are reported both im-mediately and after the ostomy procedure (few weeks or months later). In a 60-day hospital readmission analysis involving 603 illeostomy patients, dehydration was the common reason for readmission, which comprised 43.1 percent of cases. Lincoln Ostomy Associationsupporting UNL study University of Nebraska Food Science & Technology De-partment are planning to launch a study with the help of Lincoln Ostomy Association members. Jacques Izard, clinical research director, joined the group in January to discuss the plan. Izard’s laboratory focuses on the interaction of our microbi-ome with diet and how this interaction impacts wellness. He said volunteers with ostomies would receive a kit to provide samples for the study. UNL, he said, is key to developing methods to understand the impact of the digestive tract bacteria in health and disease such as cancer. Izard asked LOA members advice on products which could be included in the test kits and the best methods to communicate and solicit volunteers. Watch future Sparrow’s for updates on this important study.

Are you nervous, anxious or confused about your medical condi-tion? People who do not feel confident in their understanding of their medical condition feel fearful. Once they are educated about their condition, they are more confident to speak up, according to UOAA. “Knowledge is power,” said Sir Francis Bacon. Many people assume they have no role in their care. They leave it in the professionals’ hands. People who don’t understand medical lingo can feel intimidat-ed by medical professionals. Most people are afraid to say – I don’t understand what you are saying. Make a list of what you do and don’t understand to generate the proper questions to ask. Speak up, so you don’t have regrets later, especially when it might be something as serious as your health. You are the person experienc-ing the symptoms or whatever the issue is. It is absolutely your place to express your concerns. Keep an ongoing list of your questions and concerns prior to meeting with your medical professional.

Are you too nervous to talk to the

doctor?

United Ostomy Associations of America, or UOAA, reports that some foods are less digestible than others and may pose a risk of ostomy blockage. These foods include corn, coconut, mushrooms, nuts, raw fruits and vegetables. You should avoid foods that don’t digest completely, which include cabbage, celery, dried fruit, green peppers, lettuce, mushrooms, peas, pineapple, popcorn, seeds, skins from fruits and vegetables. Blockage of the ostomy can lead to an emergency situation. If you experience symptoms such as thin, clear liquid coming out of your stoma with a foul odor, cramping and abdominal pain near the stoma, or no output for several hours, you should call your doctor.

Crohn’s and Colitis are known to affect joints and muscles and that problem just doesn’t go away with surgery. He said treatments are good at making things more comfortable.ABOUT DR. We’ve lost a friend The Lincoln Ostomy Association mourns the loss of Donna Jean (Erks) Stevens who died Feb. 11. Donna, and her husband John, have been regular visitors to the LOA meetings supporting the organiza-tion with everything from snacks and communication work to support and friendship. From Pleasant Dale, the Stevens’ have two children, Tandra and Patrick. Donna worked in nursing homes and later in home health. In 1978, she earned geriatric certification, and, in 1986, she started her own business as a home health aide until 2000. She obtained a phlebotomy certification in 1998. Donna loved one on one care with her patients, teaching Sunday school and riding motorcycles with John. After retirement Donna volunteered at Tabitha Hospice and was a member of Lincoln Christian Fellowship in Lincoln, CMA Foundation Riders, American Legion Auxiliary Post #3 and a Legion Rider through the American Legion Post #3. Donna will be remembered for her sense of humor and commitment to God, as she always put Him first in her life.

And then, through church, she met Andrew. “When Dee met Andrew, who was so understanding and loving, it was a big lift,” Junkinsaid.“Shewasmalnourished,hairthinning...butherinnerenergyandpositivityand belief in God overshadowed all that. Andrew recognized Dee in that way and she just keeps getting better and better. Dee endured a lot of suffering, but her faith and sense of humor and Andrew’s love was just what the doctor ordered!
