In Memoriam FOOD DRIVE“Any effort that brings together people of all ages and backgrounds—students, parents, teachers, alumni—for the betterment of our city is something I will always support. A holiday food drive brings out the best in all of us; I would encourage everyone in the Lincoln community to get involved with this exciting new initiative. It’s a wonderful way to lend a hand in the fight against hunger and will help ensure a brighter holiday season for hundreds of our fellow citizens.”—Ted Wheeler, Portland Mayor-Elect & LHS Class of ‘81There’s a long tradition at Lincoln High School of giving back to the community. To put it simply: Cardinals care. A new initiative brings together students, parents, staff, and alumni to help Portland’s hungry—including Lincoln families in need—during the holidays. Now in its third year, the LHS Alumni Food Drive delivers food boxes on the Saturday before Christmas. Last year volunteers, led by Lincoln’s Black Student Union, packed and delivered nearly five hundred boxes. The Lincoln community raised a generous portion of the approximately $20,000 needed to purchase the food from Oregon Food Bank. The remainder was under-written by the Jesuit High School Alumni Association, which has run its own successful holiday food drive for more than four decades and has lent a helping hand as Lincoln gets its own program off the ground. This year, our goal is to increase • the number of boxes delivered;• LHS alumni and student involvement;• our fundraising effortsTo reach these goals, we need your help.• Donate: all funds go directly to purchasing food; there is no overhead. Please mail your tax-deductible gift today to LHS Alumni Food Drive, 1600 SW Salmon Street, Portland, OR 97205. Or donate online:https://www.schoolpay.com/pay/for/AlumniBSU-Holiday-Food-Drive-Donation/Id7Ah• Pack and deliver boxes on December 16 and 17: contact volunteer coordinator Janet Lamson, 503-260-2942 or [email protected]• Find out about sponsorship opportunities for your business: contact Brian Lamson, LHS Alumni Food Drive chairman, 503-319-2725 or [email protected] hope you’ll get involved with this worthy effort to fight hunger in our community.Planning Committee: Brian Lamson (chair), Tom Booth, David Evans, Jill Farrow, John Grout, Kathleen Hart, Bob Keerins, Janet Lamson, & Glenn McMath. n

The sight of Mount Kilimanjaro ignited a dream to climb the Seven Summits, the Explorers Grand Slam.2006 (after graduation) found Colin cycling from Connecticut to Oregon, a 4000 mile journey to raise money and awareness for Habitat for Humanity. Prior to beginning his professional career in finance, Colin began backpacking around the world but his trip was cut short by an accident in Thailand, where 25% of his body was burned, mostly damaging his legs and feet. He was told by his doctors that he may never regain his ability to walk normally but Colin defied this prognosis and trained and placed first overall (amateur) at the 2009 Chicago Triathlon. Since then Colin has turned Pro, competing in 22 countries on six continents - representing the United States in the Triathlon. The challenge, Beyond 7/2- January 2016 Colin set out to shatter a world record, summiting the tallest peak on each of the seven continents, ski the last degree to the North and South Poles in less than six months. Alisha Zhao, Nation’s 10 Top teen volunteers organizing activities to help homeless kids reach their potential, including arts and crafts projects, games, tutoring, peer mentoring, life skills classes and donations of school supplies. In recognition of her leadership, Portland Mayor Charlie Hales named her the first teen on the city’s Human Rights Commission. Shannon O’Malley, a former Nike Foundation program coordinator who serves on the Kids First advisory board, told The Oregonian/OregonLive’s Amy Wang last year that Zhao is a “rock star.” “She just brings a level of excellence that I don’t think I’ve ever seen in someone her age,” O’Malley said. “To see the people that she’s

brought in to support this project and the different networks that she’s tapped into is so impressive.” For being selected as one of national national honorees in The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, Zhao was awarded $5,000, an engraved gold medallion plus a $5,000 grant from The Prudential Foundation for a nonprofit charity of her choice.

Alisha Zhao, a junior at Portland’s Lincoln High, was named one of the nation’s 10 top teen volunteers Monday for her work with homeless children and teens. The17-year-old was judged among the 10 most impressive from a field of more than 29,000 youth volunteers. She has created and led a large nonprofit devoted to helping homeless youth break the cycle of poverty.

Zhao first created a club at her school to provide services to local homeless people, then founded the non-profit “Kids First Project” to expand her efforts and focus on youth. She recruited an advisory board, a board of directors and volunteer leaders, and began
