Define & describe opportunity classes (zones).

Create Zones based

upon the ROS classes: Primitive

Semi-primitive Non-motorized

Semi-primitive Motorized

Roaded Natural Rural

Urban

Select indicators of resource & social conditions.Indicators are things we can measure which tell us if desired

resource & social conditions are changing from human use. Good indicators:

SpecificObjective

Reliable/repeatableRelated to visitor use

Sensitive to visitor use over a relatively short time

Manageable

Efficient & effective to measureSignificanthelpdefine the quality of the visitor experience

Specify standards for both. The point at which an indicator tells us that the change is

acceptable or not.

Exceeding the standard should trigger amanagement action.

If it isnt broken, dont fix it!

Management actions can be traced back to specificproblems (via indicators).

trail per ride

Guest satisfactionIndicator: Users level of satisf action on a 9 pt scale with

quality of recreation experience (based on survey)Standard: Greater than 80% of those surveyed indicate they

are satisfied/very satisfied with quality of dayexperience (minimal acceptable)

Implement actions and monitor conditions Develop a systematic monitoring plan

(sch

edule, pro

toco

ls,locat

ions) Take measurements on the ground and compare to

standards. If standards are exceeded:

1st, check conditions and sampling2nd, check if standard is appropriate

Then Implement ManagementAction.
