Abigail Hyndman- A Tough Act to Follow This Week’s Feature Story

Abigail Hyndman, Miss BVI 2011 is going to be

one hard act to follow. At only 21 she comes across

with a self-assurance that is beyond her years. Her

next challenge is just over a week away, as she pre-

pares for the prestigious 7th annual Miss Caribbean

World Pageant which will be on Saturday, May 5th at

the Multipurpose Sports Complex from 7pm.

One of the many opportunities awarded to Miss

BVI, is the once in a life-time chance to compete for

the coveted 61st Miss Universe Crown in December.

However, being Miss BVI is also about being an

ambassador for the BVI and just months after secur-

ing the title, Abigail started to make

a name for herself causing heads to

turn; not only for her beauty; but

for her articulate presentations,

winning personality and determi-

nation.

In a recent interview, Abigail

said that one of the highlights of

her reign was a trip to Germany

with the Tourist Board to the ITB

Berlin tourism trade show. She

said, “I had never been to Europe before, so to meet

all the different people and help promote the BVI was

very special.”

Abigail, who will return to her medical studies at

Louisianna State University next year, took a year out

from her studies to fulfill the duties of Miss BVI. She

also uses her position to help victims of domestic vio-

lence and works closely with the Family Support

Network (FSN) with the goal to have a shelter built on

Tortola.

Abigail is eager to bring the Miss Caribbean

World and Miss Universe crowns home to the BVI and

she knows that do to this she needs

to be prepared and remain focused

on the goal. She said, “I have had a

wonderful year as Miss BVI 2011

and feel very confident about Miss

Caribbean World, I also want to help

the contestants for Miss BVI 2012

so they know what to expect and

can get the most out of the experi-

ence; this has been a dream come

true for me.”

Single and Bored

Send your questions to [email protected] and aresponse will be provided

Dear Koren,I ended a relationship the other day and now

with all the extra time on my hands, I am bored. It’sonly now that I realize how much time I was spendingon this guy and his needs to the point where I don’teven know what my needs are. How do I rebuild mylife as a single person? –Bored

Dear Bored,Your simple question is loaded with a lot of

issues, but I will answer simply what you asked.Ending a relationship causes a lot of different feelingsfor different persons – some feel regretful, some feelrelieved and some feel empty. Your feelings of bore-dom are natural if you were used to spending a lot oftime with him. Your focus must now be shifted.Imagine yourself pushing your head out of a shell likea turtle and seeing the world in a whole differentlight?

First of all, stop calling yourself bored…startaddressing yourself as “single and fabulous” and ifyou don’t feel fabulous, fake it until you make it (bor-rowed words). Being single is not a curse it is anopportunity to take stock of your life and your goals.Spend some time to assess the relationship to see

what could have beendone differently and howyou have grown or notgrown as a result of thatrelationship. This will helpyou to maybe do thingsdifferently next time andalso to bring some closure to your feelings.

Understand that being single does not mean youare half a person; you are a whole person who is justromantically unattached right now. Spend your freetime doing things you enjoy - do a free course, startjournaling, try new recipes, volunteer somewhere, etc. or you could reconnect with old girlfriends thatyou might have put aside when you started datingand even with family members who you might haveneglected. There are so many activities you canengage in and had fun either alone or with others.

In the meanwhile, don’t give up on true love. Younever know when you will meet that special someone, maybe when you least expect it. In the meanwhile, just keep living as full a life as you can and enjoy thefreedom of nurturing you.

The Last Ferry BluesLiving on an island is blissful, but there are times

when one just has to get off. It may be for business or

fun, but travelling by plane is a must for people who live

in a place surrounded by water. Getting off the rock

though is becoming increasingly difficult of late. Airlines

are cutting back service to Beef Island and the ones that

do fly here are charging higher fares.

I’m not sure if a longer runway is the answer, but I do

know that improved ferry schedules between St. Thomas

and Tortola would be an immediate fix – one that would

be less environmentally damaging than filling in a part of

Trellis Bay. I have made a number of trips to the US from

St. Thomas on American and Spirit in recent years, and

improved ferry schedules and on-time service would

take a lot of anxiety out of the trip.

“What time is your last boat from Charlotte Amalie

to West End next Tuesday?” I recently asked the lady at

the counter of one of the ferry companies. I was going to

Florida over the long Easter weekend; leaving on

Thursday and returning on Tuesday.

“Four pm,” she replied.

“When I booked my tickets in February, your sched-

ule said 4:30,” I told her, already feeling my anxiety level

rise. My return flight on Spirit was scheduled (if all went

well) to land at 3:30.

“Call on Tuesday,” she said, “and see if there is a

change.” Well, I did call on Tuesday and sure enough the

ferry was leaving at 4. There was no way that I was going

to make that one, but fortunately their competitor was

leaving at 4:30. It was a close call: if my plane had been

just 30 minutes late I wouldn’t have made it.

Yes, I know that there is a 9 pm ferry – but it’s only

Friday to Sunday and not in the off-season when resi-

dents are still flying, even if the tourists are not. How

wonderful it would be if there was a daily (and reliable)

5:30 – or even – 6pm ferry. Then if my plane was a bit late,

I might actually make it home. And of course, when I go

to St. Thomas to shop, an extra hour in Kmart might just

come in handy!

Over his 40 years in andaround the business,Gary Stevens has gaineda unique perspective onthoroughbred racing. He is best known, ofcourse, as the jockey with4,888 career wins to hiscredit, including threeKentucky Derbies andBelmont Stakes, two

Preakness Stakes, eight Breeders’ Cup races, and arecord nine Santa Anita Derbies. His mounts have col-lected more than $221 million, and he’s a member ofthe Racing Hall of Fame.

He’s also served as a jockey agent, a trainer forhis Gary Stevens Racing Stable (which was disbandedtwo years ago due to the demands of his schedule),an actor in movies such as Seabiscuit and the recent-ly canceled HBO series Luck, and a racing analyst forNBC, TVG and HRTV.

It’s in that last capacity he’ll be front and centeron Saturday, May 5, when NBC presents coverage ofthe 138th Kentucky Derby from Churchill Downs inLouisville.

The first leg of racing’s Triple Crown is run at 1 1/4miles and features the sport’s top 3-year-olds. Whileeach of the three races has its particular challenge, the big one here is crowds, and not just on the track.Yes, with up to 20 horses, the Derby typically has thelargest field of the Triple Crown races, but it also drawsthe most humans, which can be distracting to theequine athletes on the track.

“You’ve got to have a horse that handles the

Gary Stevens talks Kentucky Derby and ‘Luck’atmosphere of 130,000 people,” Stevens says. “Youknow, they have never seen a crowd like this, and theyprobably will never see another crowd like that in theircareer unless it happens to be Breeders’ Cup day. ...It’s the first time that any of these 3-year-olds will beasked to run a mile and a quarter, and that’s the ques-tion mark: not only which horse is going to have thespeed but also going to have the stamina.”

As a jockey, Stevens liked to be on a horse withearly speed.

“Mentally and physically, I preferred to have ahorse that could lay up close to the lead,” he says,“that was very tactical, that had speed when youneeded it. And that’s what I look for now when I’manalyzing these races. I look for a horse with a certaintype of style ... a horse that has speed from the gateto keep himself out of trouble in traffic, and obviouslythe less traffic you have to go through, the morechances are you’re not going to get stopped.”

But unlike some jockeys, Stevens isn’t a fan ofgoing straight to the rail.

“Obviously that’s the shortest way around theracetrack,” he says, “but I think you’ve got to put yourhorse where he’s the most comfortable. Some horsesare more comfortable outside of horses; some horseswill race in between, down inside or whatever. So itjust depends on the individual that you’re riding.”

Until recently, Stevens showed his acting chopsin Luck as troubled jockey Ronnie Jenkins. The serieswas canceled in March after three horses were injuredduring filming and had to be euthanized. Stevens wasdisappointed that the low-rated though criticallyacclaimed series didn’t make it to a second season, but he’s hopeful more such roles will come his way.

The DescendantsBy Jan Critchley

This is a different role for George Clooney and

well outside his comfort zone of self composed

cool. In this gentle, funny and moving film he plays

Matt King, who lives a comfortable life with his fam-

ily in Hawaii where his ancestors have lived for gen-

erations. They are also owners of a 25,000-acre

chunk of prime island real estate which Matt's

cousins have put him in charge of selling, or keep-

ing – and the impending decision is a topic of great

local interest.

A self-described "back-up parent" to two

daughters and an inattentive husband, Matt has

even bigger problems when his wife Elizabeth

(Patricia Hastie) who has been injured in a water-

skiing accident, lies in a coma and is unlikely to

recover.

Matt has no hope of coping alone with Scottie

(Amara Miller), his 10-year-old daughter, so he

retrieves Alexandra (Shailene Woodley), his rebel-

lious 17-year-old daughter, from boarding school to

spend time with her mother and help with Scottie.

Alexandra is angry and surly, which is explained

when she drops the bombshell that Elizabeth was

having an affair. Matt is devastated, of course, and

he spends a big chunk of the movie half-heartedly

looking for the other man, at times acting like the

most-inept stalker in the world.

Matt and the girls, along with Alexandra's

friend Sid (Nick Krause), also must make the circuit

of friends and family to tell them of Elizabeth's con-

dition and to give them a chance to say goodbye. It

is at this point that Sid, who initially seemed insen-

sitive to the family’s situation, finally steps up and

shows his true colors.

What's good about the film is the way it plays

out – it captures the complexity of emotions that

grief stirs up in different people. The facts of what

we see in front of us, a privileged family, a tragic

accident, a mult-imillion dollar real-estate deal

looming – would suggest something far removed

from real life for most of us, but the movie makes it

relatable to everyone.

More then 550 youngsters – 559 to be exact – are

down to participate in the BDO Schools Football

League, which opens with a parade of teams from

schools throughout the Territory at 3 p.m. on Sunday,

from the Road Town Ferry Terminal to the A. O. Shirley

Recreation Grounds.

From the dock, the teams in their colorful BDO

uniforms, will march to the A. O. Shirley Recreation

Grounds for the league’s opening ceremony activities.

The league will run through July 1.

The BDO BVI Schools Football League has

attracted 559 boys and girls between the ages of 5

and 14 years. There are 328 males registered in the

Primary Schools division and 231 females, while there

are 191 males and 144 females in the High School divi-

sion.

The 7 and Under division has 14 teams; 9 and

Under 8 teams; 12 and Under 15 teams. In the High

School division, 14 and Under has 4 teams and 3 male

Open teams; 3 female Open teams; In all, there are 19

Primary Schools involved, 4 High Schools and HLSCC.

Matches on Tortola will be played at the A. O.

Shirley Recreation Grounds and at Little Dix Field on

Virgin Gorda.

BDO – which has also been a proud supporter of

many youth events in the Territory including basket-

ball camps put on by the BVI Hoop-It-Up Foundation,

athletic meets, Kids and the Sea (KATS), Makos Swim

Club, BSafe program and various youth programs

through involvement in Rotary – is making its biggest

contribution with a $20,000 investment in the 2012

Schools Football League.

This sponsorship will assist the BVIFA in running

its school football leagues, which incorporate stu-

dents in various age groups with the aim of emphasiz-

ing to students the meaning of leadership and team-

work.

“Sports provide young people a great way to dis-

cover their abilities,” Ryan Geluk, a BDO director

noted during a ceremony to kick off the league where

he presented the $20,000 cheque. “Through train-

ing, physical activity and working as a team to reach a

goal, kids learn what it means to be a success. It’s a

lesson that applies in all areas of life.”

The BDO 2012 Schools Football League – which

also involves public and private high schools – will

see teams competing throughout the Territory from

Monday. “BDO sees this expansion of its sponsorship

of schools football as providing youth with an oppor-

tunity to personally grow and develop through team-

work and commitment,” said Andy Bickerton,

Managing Director of BDO BVI Limited, who is also

the BVIFA President.

BVIFA officials have also visited Anegada and

Jost Van Dyke and it is expected that students from

schools on those islands will get an opportunity to

also have their kick.

Eager youngsters will be ready to get their kick from Sunday
