MEET THE CO-DIRECTORS AND WRITERS

Canadian-born Dean DeBlois is equally at home in the worlds of live-action and animation filmmaking. Having most recently written, directed, and executive produced the Golden Globe®-winning "How to Train Your Dragon 2," Dean is currently writing and directing the third installment of the Academy Award®-nominated "How to Train Your Dragon trilogy." Prior to collaborating on the original "How to Train Your Dragon" with Chris Sanders, the pair had written and directed Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Lilo & Stitch and served as co-heads of story "Mulan." In 2007, Dean stepped behind the live-action camera to direct the indie critical darling "Heima," which documents alternative/post-rock band Sigur Rós’ series of free, unannounced concerts performed in their home country of Iceland. He followed up the concert documentary with "Go Quiet," a feature length music film for Sigur Rós front-man, Jónsi. In addition, Dean has set up several live-action projects on which he is serving as writer, director, and producer. They include "The Banshee" and "Finn Magee" at The Walt Disney Studios, "Sightings" at Universal Studios, and "The Lighthouse" at Buena Vista. Dean started his career at Hinton Animation Studios and worked as animator on the television series "The Raccoons." He next joined Don Bluth’s Sullivan Bluth Studios in Ireland and worked as a layout artist on the animated features "Thumbelina" and "A Troll in Central Park."

Born into an artistic household in Colorado, Chris Sanders grew up drawing and penning short stories. Although Chris drew throughout school and served as the cartoonist for the Arvada High School newspaper, he hadn't considered art as something he could do for a living. But when his grandmother found a random article about the California Institute of the Arts (or CalArts) in the Denver Post, everything changed. Chris applied for and was accepted to CalArts' Animation Program, and went on to work for Marvel Productions, and then Disney Studios. He worked as a story artist on The Rescuers Down Under, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Lion King, before he was made head of story on Mulan. Near the end of Mulan, then-Head of Feature Animation Tom Schumacher asked Chris if there were anything he wanted to develop. "I remembered a story from eighteen years before that I had tried to write as a children's book, but had given up on, because I couldn't compress it into a short story format. Over a sushi dinner at the Walt Disney World Swan Resort, I pitched that story -- a tale of a strange forest creature, shunned by all, and unaware of his own origins.Tom liked it, and when he suggested I relocate the tale of the lonely little monster into the human world, Lilo & Stitch was born." Chris wrote, boarded, and directed Lilo & Stitch with Dean DeBlois. In 2006, Chris left Disney Studios to join the filmmaking team at DreamWorks Animation. When he was given the opportunity to direct How to Train Your Dragon, he jumped at the chance. Born March 12, 1962 in Colorado Springs, Chris Sanders was the middle of three children. Chris remembers, "Art was the dominant thing in our house as we grew up. My dad was always sketching and painting -- mostly abstract stuff and Buck Rogers-style spaceships. On Friday nights, we all sat at the dining room table around big glasses of water and painted as a family. We were always welcome to draw at my dad's desk, and we had a constant supply of Blackwing pencils and computer paper he had liberated from the office where he worked." When he wasn't drawing or gathering things from other people's trash, Chris used a manual Underwood typewriter to tap out short stories. "Tiny tales that usually ended in misfortune, misery, and disaster. I proudly passed the finished work out to my family. Rather than seek emotional counsel for me, they just asked for more stories, which I happily supplied, trying to invent new accidents more terrible than the last." At DreamWorks, Chris also wrote and directed the comedy-adventure feature film The Croods with Kirk DeMicco, which was released on March 22, 2013. In 2015, Chris made his publishing debut with the young-adult novel "Rescue Sirens: The Search for the Atavist," a concept created by Chris's wife and co-author, Jessica Steele-Sanders. In addition to co-writing the book, Chris also provided the character designs and cover illustrations.

THE MAKING OF LILO AND STITCH

"There's trouble and plenty of laughter in paradise when a lonely Hawaiian girl named Lilo wishes upon a falling star for someone to be her friend and the galaxy's most mischievous alien answers her call in Walt Disney Pictures' delightful new animated comedy, "Lilo & Stitch. " Combining unforgettable characters, an imaginative and offbeat story, and colorful artistry (including the Studio's first major use of watercolor backgrounds in a feature in six decades), the film follows Lilo's close encounter with Stitch, an out-of control genetic experiment who has escaped from an alien planet and crash-landed on Earth. Posing as a small strange-looking "dog," Stitch is adopted by Lilo and leaves a wide path of chaos in his wake. Through her love, faith and unwavering belief in ohana (the Hawaiian word and concept for family), Lilo helps unlock Stitch's heart and give him the one thing he was never designed to have a family. With its lush tropical settings, quirky sense of humor, and classic songs by Elvis Presley, "Lilo & Stitch" takes moviegoers on an entertaining excursion across an animated universe. This is the second feature film to be produced at Disney's Florida Feature Animation facility, which had previously created the 1998 animated favorite, "Mulan."

Adding a unique and entertaining element to "Lilo & Stitch" is a rocking soundtrack fit for a "King" “ Elvis Presley, that is. Included in the film are six of Elvis' biggest hits, sung by Elvis himself, as well as an exciting new recording of the Elvis hit "Burning Love," newly recorded by Grammy Award-nominated country singer Wynonna. Another Elvis favorite, "Can't Help Falling in Love with You," is heard over the end credits in a new rendition performed by popular Swedish vocal group A*Teens. Acclaimed composer Alan Silvestri (an Oscar® nominee for "Forrest Gump") added to the fun and fantasy of the film's wild and unpredictable proceedings with his original score, and collaborated with renowned hula master/performer Mark Kealiâ omalu on two Hawaiian-themed songs. The latter are performed by members of the Kamehameha School Children's Chorus.

Bringing Lilo and Stitch to the Screen

17

Guiding "Lilo & Stitch" from inception through production was the writing/directing team of Chris Sanders & Dean DeBlois. Sanders, a multi-talented contributor to Disney Feature Animation since 1987, who had previously storyboarded key sequences in "Beauty and the Beast," served as production designer on "The Lion King" and was head of story on "Mulan," came up with the original idea for the film. DeBlois, who had previously teamed with Sanders as co-head of story on "Mulan," brought his story and layout expertise to this project. Sanders and DeBlois had the distinction of storyboarding their own screenplay, instead of the more common practice of turning that task over to a story team. In this way, the filmmakers' vision for the project remained constant and provided the animators and creative team with clear direction every step of the way.

The film's producer was Clark Spencer, a 12-year Disney veteran who joined the Studio in the planning and finance area and had most recently served as senior vice president and general manager of Walt Disney Feature Animation Florida. Lisa Poole served as associate producer. Artistic coordinator Jeff Dutton lent his creative and managerial skills to help the production maximize its resources and realize the greatest results on screen."

18

"As producer Clark Spencer recounts it, Lilo & Stitch creator Chris Sanders' initial concern was finding somewhere remote enough to support the film's one-of-a-kind storyline. At the time, Chris was looking for an isolated place where he could have an alien land more on that in a moment and not be discovered right away. Putting Stitch in a large city would have been very difficult from a story standpoint.

In addition, Sanders and Dean DeBlois had recently finished working together as co-heads of story on Disney's Mulan, and, as Sanders puts it, the two artists were looking to do something on a less epic level. We had finished a movie of such incredible scale we were dealing with multitudes of people in China and we wanted to bring that scale way, way down.

So Kansas it was, until Sanders happened to glance at a map of the Hawaiian Islands. I thought, "Golly, look how small and finite that island is," he says. Even so, the fact that no feature-length animated film had ever been set solely in the Islands made Kauai a less-than-obvious choice at first. "Animation has been set so much in ancient, medieval Europe so many fairy tales find their roots there, says Sanders, "that to place it in Hawaii was kind of a big leap. But that choice went on to color the entire movie, and rewrite the story for us."

Which brings us to the story. The short version, as Sanders originally envisioned it: Lilo is a lonely young girl living with her sister. One day, she adopts what she thinks is a dog, and names her new pet, Stitch completely unaware that he is actually a dangerous and nearly indestructible genetic experiment escaped from another planet. The story called for Stitch to mend his ways under the influence of Lilo, but it was unclear what about her would bring about such a change. An early research trip to Kauai answered that question.

On the Location

19

No matter where we went, our tour guide seemed to know somebody, recalls DeBlois. "He was really the one who explained to us the Hawaiian concept of ohana, a sense of family that extends far beyond your immediate relatives. That idea so influenced the story that it became the foundation theme, the thing that causes Stitch to evolve despite what he was created to do, which is destroy." "It's a very different story for feature animation to tell, but [Disney] really believes in Chris Sanders as an idea guy he's a rare, rare talent. And when Chris pitched it, everyone was so captivated by what they saw. So captivated, in fact, that the company took an unheralded step: Sanders and DeBlois, who had already been working together on the storyboards for the film before it was green-lighted, were given near-complete creative control as co-writers, storyboard artists and directors, a first for a Disney film. As Spencer points out, even with a crew of 400 including some thirty animators, the end result is a film of distinct personality, reflecting the particular drawing technique that both Sanders and DeBlois employ. "We call it the Chris Sanders style" says Spencer. "Every shape is soft and rounded, all elements are slightly inflated, 'chubbed up,' as our art director refers to it, whether it be the clouds in the sky or the landscape or the houses or the street signs."

It's a style that hearkens back to the classic Disney films of the 1930s and 40s, and in part explains the filmmakers' decision to resurrect an animation technique that hadn't been seen on the big screen since Disney's 1941 classic "Dumbo": the use of watercolors. "At the outset, I think everyone was very nervous that we wanted to try this," says DeBlois. The notion of watercolor was originally abandoned after "Dumbo" because production schedules were getting tighter, and the background artists had to move a lot faster." "Watercolor is a very unforgiving medium," adds Sanders. Gouache [the current industry standard] is an opaque paint, so if you make a mistake you are able to cover it over. Watercolor doesn't forgive that sort of error, so you have to preplan everything you paint."

Before we even went to Hawaii, we assembled this great library of photographs and magazine clippings and what not," says DeBlois. "One of the curious things that we found was that when you looked at the photos it was really hard to pinpoint when the picture was taken, because you'd have this really old toaster and this really old refrigerator, and right beside it you'd have a microwave, so it couldn't be that old. We kept looking around and finding these elements of old and new, and it was so eclectic and charming that we made sure to include it in our art direction."

20

"What kind of music do you choose for a film that's set in Hawaii and combines such disparate elements as surfing and a mischievous alien character? That was the question facing the filmmakers as they began fleshing out the screenplay and storyboards for "Lilo & Stitch."Thomas Schumacher recalls, "It was early on in the process when Chris and Dean were pitching a scene where they had Lilo playing an Elvis record and I thought that it was hilarious to have this little girl who loves Elvis. It gave her an edge because it's such a sophisticated thing to like. We found that having songs like Suspicious Minds' and 'Hound Dog' added so much character to the film and seemed oddly Hawaiian at the same time. A lot of us remember the Hawaii Elvis period. I remember the first time I came to Kauai and thought; Ooh, this is kind of Elvisland.'

"Music is so organic to our movies," he adds. "The Elvis music gave us some humor and also a nostalgic charm. But being in Hawaii, there's also a fantastic sound of native music. At first, you think of steel drums and a ukulele. But there's also a native sound that involves chanting. It's a rhythmic sound of hope and it has a real purity to it. We found a fantastic children's choir to sing for us and their angelic voices leap off the screen and represent a hope and innocence that is there on the islands. It gives a purity that rises up and carries you through the story."

During the course of the film, Elvis is heard singing six of his biggest hits: "Heartbreak Hotel," "Stuck on You," "Blue Hawaii," "Suspicious Minds," "Devil in Disguise" and "Hound Dog." The songs add comedy, commentary and entertainment to the plot while helping to define the characters. The soundtrack for the 1961 film "Blue Hawaii" was one of the most successful in Elvis' incredible career and landed in the #1 spot on the charts for 20 weeks.

On The Music

21

Page 22: Lilo & Stitch · “Donnie Darko”. She would subsequently provide the voices of Chihiro Ogino in the English dub of the Studio Ghibli film “Spirited Away”, and Lilo Pelekai

In keeping with the Elvis music theme, the filmmakers decided to enlist two of today's top talents to create new versions of Elvis hits. Country superstar Wynonna recorded a new version of "Burning Love" for the film. She first came on the music scene as part of the mother-daughter duo The Judds in 1984, and in six short years sold more than 20 million records worldwide and won over sixty industry awards including five Grammys, nine Country Music Association Awards and eight Billboard Music Awards. In 1991, Naomi Judd retired due to health reasons and the following year, Wynonna began the second amazing success story of her life. She signed her first solo record deal in 1992 and her critically acclaimed album, Wynonna, sold over five million units to become the highest-selling debut album by a female artist at the time. This was followed by such other wildly successful releases as Tell Me Why, Revelations, Collection, The Other Side, and New Day Dawning. Her new album will debut in the fall of 2002. She has accumulated sales totals in excess of nine million units as well as over seventeen major industry awards, including the coveted Female Vocalist of the Year in 1994 by the Academy of Country Music, and thirteen top-ten hits on the charts.

Schumacher recalls, "We talked a lot about how the movie would end and we came up with a montage that takes the story forward into a new day. The idea of having Wynonna record the song came from our executive music supervisor Chris Montan. He really wanted a new recording by a contemporary star who could dig into that Elvis classic and make it rip."
