1979 LL.S. PIANTAUCI'ICN

rr

Four long rronths of winter have care to Freedan and Aprilis just around the comer. Spring must be comingfor Sally ispreparing her seed orders. In two rronths wewill be assemblingin DurhamN.H. (June 8 & 9) for our 1979 annual rreeting.

{Our 1978 auction was a success, for approximately $600.00

was added to our treasury. Manythanks to my assistants, tothose rrerrbersand Arboreta whoprovided plants, and to all whobidfor and bought plants. I believe all.in attendance enjoyeda fun evening. Certainly your auctioneer enjoyed himself:Lnmensely. The can of "Billy's Beer" proved to be "the pausethat refreshes" during the break and the emptycan brought $1.00in the auction.

The availability of exotic, new, old and hard-to-findvarieties will stimulate interest, bidding and makeour 1979auction a success. Small numbers (3-6) of manyvarieties is farrrore interesting than large nurrbers (20-30) of a few varieties.

Our eastern rrernbersshould start thinking about what plantsthey might donate for our 1979 auction. Our mid-western ID2ITbersshould prepare plants this spring and sumrer for our rreeting inOhio in 1980.

II..I

The above is rrerely a guideline and does not prevent rnerrbersfran all areas donating ready plants to any auction (LL.S. - thatis. Ed).

Will donors of plants please provide me the follc.:winginfonnation at the meeting prior to the auction:

,a) nanBof donorb) nameand age of plantc) color; flc.:wers- single or doubled) blcoming season - early, mid, latee) other pertinent infonnation (availability, scarcity,

etc.) to prorrote sale

"AMember~vrites"

Mrs. Wilson Starnpeof Davenport, IA had a fond wish atleast partially realized on November9th when, as she reports,The DavenportHorticulture Society had a planting bee. And,they madea good beginning in planting the nEW'Lilac Gardenthere in DUCKCREEKPARK.

They started with rrore then 40 'CMn Root' plants and plansare to add nore in the spring. Theywould like sore of thesmall lilacs to fill out the space already prepared.

Narredpeonies were included in the planting as well as4500 spring bulbs. The setting is enhancedby background trees, including a couple of magnificent Beeches (Fagus), which theStarnpesand other rrerrbershad helped 'save' earlier.

TheNovember1978 planting included the fo.l.Lcwi.nq: 'EdithCavell', 'CapitaineBaltet', 'Diplomate', 'Lucie Baltet',,Fi:rmament', ,funge', 'Diderot', 'Marechal Lannes', 'Virgini te' ,'Vestale', 'Henri Martin', 'MITe. Antoine Bucher', 'Olivier deSerres' and 'AmiSchott'. Twoearly blooming hybrids, 'Catinat'and 'Assessippi' along with a Preston introduction 'Pocahontas',two species; S. patula (syn. velutina) and S. reticulata as wellas the very fragrant early bloaning variety-of the KoreanLilac,S. cblata var.dilatata.

Syringa vulgaris 'PornPorn', Robinson 1937'Ihrough recent correspondence with Mr. Ed Robinson, proprietorof Gaybird Nursery, Wawanesa,Manitoba, Canada, I have learnedthat 'PornPan' is the correct and intended narre for thiscultivar. The narre registe:r:ed, narrely 'Porn',was submitted inerror and appeared without description in the 1967 LilacRegistration (ARPORETUMANDBOI'ANICALGARDENBULLETIN1(2): 19(April 1967» and in the Tentative International Register ofCultivar nanes in the Genus Syringa (April 1976), p. 59. 'Ihedescription of 'PornPorn' appeared in several Gaybird Nurserycatalogues in the 1960s as: " ..• bloarrs are rounded on goodsprays, lilac mauve, fading to pale mauve."

Syringa vulgaris IRedbud', Robinson 1959'Ihe narre 'Redbud' was also registered in the 1967 LilacRegistration (see above) and described as S VI (= single, magenta), "... open pol. seedling of 'MITe. F. furel', very redin bud stage." Mr. Robinson writes that through unfortunatetyping errors the namehas appeared in Safe Gaybird Nurserycatalogues as 'Redbird' and 'Red Bird'; these versions areincorrect.

Syringa vulgaris 'Godron', Lemoine1908The cultivar narr€!'Godron' has given rise to someconfusion overthe years. l'trs.McKelvey (TheLilacs, 1928; p. 308) refers tothe misspellings "Gordon" (Turbat catalogue 1910 - 1911, p. 59)and "Godroy" (Journal of the NewYorkBotanical Garden 22:235,1919). Brand PeonyFarms of Faribault, Minnesota, listed"Gudron" (1941 cat., p , 11) and "Gudrun" (Spring 1942 cat., p.10). Mr. Buckley, in his article on Syringa Taxa GrCM'inginthe Plant Research Institute Collections (Greenhouse-Garden-Grass 8(3) :1-8 (Fall 1969); reprinted in I.L.S. Newsletter1(2):11-18 (January 1972» also lists this cultivar as "Gordon".
