river flows through treecovered hills. A peaceful andbeautiful area inhabited by

Miami and Pottawatomie Indians. Theirhomes were made from green treebranches that could be bent to form theirhomes. Wild strawberries grewabundantly along the river bed which

gave this area the name of StrawberryValley.

A man named Isaac Cavin fromPennsylvania made many trips to Indianaby horseback, by covered wagon andeven by boating on the rivers looking forland to build a new city. It was here inthis area with the river and the hills thathe chose to layout his dream city. Hepaid 75 silver dollars for 80 acres of landin May 1835 and laid out 110 plots, naming the town Ligonier after his home

town of Ligonier, Pa. This was done onyear before Noble County wasorganized.

The town was laid out similar toLigonier, Pa. with a town square andgazebo. Main Street was made extrawide to accommodate the retail area;however, as businesses began to think of

building stores they realized that CavinStreet, which was one block east of MaiStreet, was bustling with traffic. CavinStreet was then known as theHuntington-White Pigeon Roadconnecting Huntington, Ind., with WhitePigeon, Mich..

Consequently, the business and retailstores built on Cavin Street and MainStreet became a residential street.

This mural depicts the area in 1835.

Thecompany grew large because people hadconfidence in him. Honesty and fairdealings had been an infallible rule fromthe start of business. In addition to thestore, members of the Straus family

country in one of their factory-madebuggies with the idea of selling somebuggies to a local farmer. A trade wasmade the farm land in exchange forsome buggies.

Jacob Straus built the beautifulWhite House at 210 Main Street in 1898which is now on the National Register. He died in 1914 after his brotherMathias and Frederick died in 1890 and

and Florida. Advertisements were placedin Harpers Bazaar, House Beautiful andVogue.

In the 1930s and 1940s everyone

looked forward to Saturday night. The stores downtown were openlate and everyone went to town to shopfor groceries. The kids would meet theirfriends and walk around together or goto the movies at the Crystal Theater.

From the theater, just across the street(where Dr. Browns office is now) young

The Ligonier Telephone Co.mural depicts the old switch-board. Harry Inks started the

e company in one of the little

offices on 2nd Street which is thestreet where this mural is painted. Atthat time, he made his own telephones tosell. He built his first telephone in anupstairs bedroom in their family home. His daughter, Louise Inks, delivered thephone bills on her bicycle. Among thecompanys first accomplishments wasthe establishment of a long distance linebetween Ligonier and the Noble Countyseat of Albion 12 miles away.

Among the early phones was thephone that was attached to the wall witha crank on the side. Each phone ownerhad a ring for example, long and ashort ring or two short rings andeveryone on that line in the county couldlisten in on their neighbors conversation.

In 1919, the phone company relocatedinto the building which is now Dr.Stones office. Telephone operators atthat time earned $25 per month. A reliefoperator received $12.50 per month. Many ladies from Ligonier weretelephone operators: Erma Gates,Thelma Holden, Norma Hite, LillianBrandeberry, Nadja Horne, Erlis Rex,Vivian Hayden, Linda Gunder, EvaSandlin, Hazel Nick Kurtz, MaureenBlack, Mable Ramsby and BerniceWhite. Ligonier's historic clock has become ourlandmark. It was given to the city in1924 by John Cavin in memory of his

father, Isaac Cavin, who was the founder of ourcity. It is a Seth Thomas clock and originally itwas weight-driven which means it had to bewound once a week!

It was finally converted to electricity in 1957.The clock was installed in front of the oldAmerican State Bank building at the corner of

Third and Cavin Streets. In 1968, when theydecided to tear down the bank and replace itwith a new one, the clock was moved south onCavin Street in front of the Ligonier TelephoneCompany. The clock stood there until the fall of1981.

One day, a semi stopped at the telephoneoffice for some information. As the truck pulledaway, it struck the clock and knocked it down. The clock was a mass of broken metal and glassand the pieces were placed in 55-gallon drumsand buckets.

When the city contacted the company that

owned the truck, it was discovered that the

company had declared bankruptcy and allowedits insurance to lapse, leaving the city with nofunds to repair the clock. The barrels and bucketwere stored in a warehouse for about a year.

In December of 1982, an anonymous donorleft a $50,000 gift to the city to repair the clock.A search was on to find someone to repair theclock and John Moss of Newton, Mass., wasselected. His resume included the restorations othe Symphony Hall Street clock in Boston and

the famous Waterhouse clock at Harvard University. Then, a way to transport it to Mass., had to

be found. Since we had Kidd's MarshmallowCompany in Ligonier that shipped marshmal-lows throughout the country, the companyoffered to ship the pieces of the clock toMassachussetts with a load of marshmallows attheir expense!

Eighteen months later, the clock was returnedto Ligonier by Kidd's and put into service at2:20 p.m. on Decemeber 8, 1984.

It now stands proudly in Triangle Park amid

    beautiful flowers and the fountain.
