Foreword

Finland is located between the 60th and 70th parallels of latitude and is one of the most northern countries in

the world. Therefore lighting and shading and their management are essential due to the steep changes in the

amount of natural light between seasons.

Finnish people appreciate proper interior lighting, especially during dark winter seasons. On the other hand the

sun shines late to the night during summer and doesn’t set for around two months in the Northern Finland in

summer. This makes proper shading very important.

In Finland, lights are used in many ways, for example for artworks and in saunas. Finland’s public streets are also

well-lighted, for example with LED-street lights in public parks. Halogen lights are currently the most popular

source of light in Finnish households. However, LED-lights are most likely to be the future of interior lighting in

Finland.

Lighting

Current trends in lighting

Finnish design is doing well in the field of lighting and old trends are coming back to the market. Especially, high-

quality and extraordinary design are the latest trends. The most usual questions from customers are concerning

color temperatures and sustainability of lamps (Sähköala.fi, Kolu 2015).

LED is growing to be most popular source of light in Finland. Energy efficiency has become an important factor

for people when it comes to deciding lamps. Natural colors, brass, copper, brown and warm colors are examples

of current trends. Chrome-framed crystal has also made a comeback (Kolu 2015).

The energy efficiency factor is highlighted by the relatively high energy prices in Finland. In 9.2.2015 the average

cost of a megawatt hour in Finland was 33 euro while in Sweden the average price was only 18.7 euro. The

difference is mainly due to the necessity to import electricity (Kauppalehti 3.9.2015).

13.6 million lamps were bought by Finnish households in 2014. The most popular source of light in Finnish

households are still halogen lights. Nevertheless, LED-lights have been predicted to become more popular than

halogen lights (Finnish Commerce Federation 2015).

According to the Robert Paajanen, CEO of Airam, halogen lights will be out of the Finnish market by the end of

September 2016. This is due to EU regulations. Consequently, it is rather safe to predict a rapid growth for the

companies specialized in LED-technology. The sales of carbon wires have been predicted to grow in Sweden and

Finland. This is mainly due to the prevailing trends in interior design in Finland (Kauppalehti 9.4.2015).

In 2015 the sales of LED-lights kept on rising. Jukka Honkanen, the product manager of Rautakesko, claims that

the sales even have doubled-compared to autumn 2014. According to Ikea, over 80% of lightbulbs sold in Finland

were LED-lights and the company only started to sell LED-lights and -light bulbs in September 2015. The reason

for this increase is due to the energy efficiency and product development of LED-technology (Helsingin Sanomat

18.8.2015).

The city of Helsinki has a project called-‘Helsinki-LED-project’. The aim of this project is to change the street lights

of Helsinki to more sustainable LED-lights (Public works department of Helsinki 2015).

The new Kruunuvuorenranta-area in Helsinki is planned to be a ‘district of light’, meaning that its lighting will

also serve as a work of art. The first lighting art piece, Oil Container 468, has already been opened and is also

visible from the sea (Kruunuvuorenranta).

In a work environment, good lighting means comfort, healthiness, safety and productivity. Increasing the

illuminance from 500 lux to 1600 lux raises workplace productivity by several percent. In jobs that need precise

lighting and sight the change is as high as 8 to 9% (Finnish Institute of Occupational Health 2014).

In addition to productivity, proper lighting solutions are also able to decrease costs significantly. The

Responsibility Manager of Posti, the Finnish postal service, states that focusing on energy efficiency has reduced

the company costs by 1.4 million euro from 2012 to 2014. Lighting has also played a part in this process

(Kauppalehti 16.9.2015).

Finnish design

Artek, a famous Finnish design brand, was founded by two Finnish architects: Alvar and Aino Aalto. Artek mainly

focuses on design furniture, but the brand also has design luminaries in their collection. Alvar Aalto has an impact

on Finnish architecture and decor. For instance, many famous Finnish lamps and buildings are designed by him

(Artek 2015).

Obligations

Finland is a member of the European Union since 1995. Therefore, the regulation of LED-lamps in Finland does

not differ from regulation in Belgium.

SESKO is the National Electrotechnical Standardization Organization representing Finland in this engineering field

as a member of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and the European Committee for

Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC). SESKO’s responsibility is to implement international electrotechnical

standards in Finland and enforce them as national SFS standards (SESKO, 2015).

Importers must make sure that delivered products are according to standards valid in the receiving country.

Manufacturers are obligated to provide information on the products and confirm that their products have been

properly tested and checked (The European Parliament and Council, Decision No 768/2008 / EC, Annex 1, Article

R4).

Importers are also responsible to ensure that all the products are properly delivered with the following items:

technical documentations, serial numbers, registered name for product and address and instructions.

Distributors have almost the same obligations as importers (European Parliament and Council, Decision No

768/2008/ EC, Annex 1, Article R4).

LED-Lighting

According to the company Frost & Sullivan, the LED-industry has been in growth globally and the total market

revenue was more than 32 billion US dollar in 2014. The compound annual growth rate is projected to be 16.8%

from 2014 to 2019. LED-lights are increasing their popularity in Europe due to the implemented EU-ban on

incandescent lights and the prospective ban on halogen lights (TEKES 2015).

Figure: The expected growth of the LED-market compared to traditional light sources globally (source: TEKES 2015)

Page 8: LIGHTING AND SHADING MARKET

Lighting & shading in Finland, FIT Helsinki I January 2016 9

LED-lights are more affordable, safe and the quality of LED-products has increased. These factors have made

LED-lights increasingly popular. Nowadays the lighting industry is also focusing on LED-lights according to Tapio

Kallasjoki, Director of the Illuminating Engineering Society (Helsingin Sanomat 8.12.2014).

Studies have shown that LED-lights are consuming 57% less electrical energy compared to T8 fluorescent lights.

Illuminance of a LED-light was only 8% less efficient compared to a T8 light (Siikanen et al. 2012).

LED-lights are safe to use and sustainable. Therefore, LED-lights offer many possibilities, for example LED-lighting

for saunas. New mechanisms have entered the market: dimming, remote controllability and motion detectors

(Talopaketti.fi).

Success stories in the Finnish LED-industry

Easy Led Oy manufactures LED-technology-included products, for instance street lights and lights for industry

halls and sport halls etc. LED-industry is one of the fastest growing industries. Easy LED’s turnover was

approximately five million euro and had 23 employees in 2014.

LEDil Oy manufactures plastic lenses and reflectors for LED-lighting manufacturers. The company has

65 employees in Salo and 20 employees abroad. LED il’s turnover was almost 25 million euro in 2014.

Greenled Oy is one of the leading producers of LED-lights in Finland with a turnover of 4.8 million euro. The

headquarter is situated in Oulu. They offer intelligent lighting solutions for companies and public properties. In

2014 Kauppalehti, a respected Finnish economic journal, gave them the Northern Growth award.

Intelligent lighting

Intelligent lighting refers to automated lighting solutions. Lights are becoming more and more complicated

machines that have integrated sensors and are able to connect to the internet. Intelligent lighting has been

improving along with home automation technology.

VTT is the technical research center of Finland. VTT’s study shows that intelligent lighting might have a positive

impact on the quality of life of people that are suffering from memory loss (Yle 2015). Intelligent lighting will

change the industry’s business models. This might include intelligent applications. Information technology and

Page 9: LIGHTING AND SHADING MARKET

10 Lighting & shading in Finland, FIT Helsinki I January 2016

electricity will be more linked together in the future. This will not only change the lives of consumers but will also

reform business models in the industry (Technical Research Center of Finland 2015).

Since lights have become more energy efficient, attention has turned to the way they are used as a means to

further improve the efficiency. That is why intelligent lighting solutions will be the next leap forward in lighting

technology. Additionally in the age of smartphones and internet, applications that control lighting are bound to

become more common. Smartphones or other wireless controllers are able to conveniently change the hue and

dimness of the lighting, being also able to conserve energy (Valo 1/2015).

Both large and small companies have started to realize the potential of intelligent and modifiable lighting. Philips

has their Hue products which are able to change color and dimness and are controlled through an application.

The products are already on the Finnish market (Philips Hue, 2015). The Finnish Cozify Oy has a product that,

among other things, is able to control lighting and can be for example programmed to switch lights on and off

when entering or leaving a room. It can likewise be controlled though a smartphone application (Cozify, 2015).

Associations and other organizations in Finland

Suomen valoteknillinen seura (Illuminating Engineering Society of Finland), is an independent organization in the

field of lighting. The organization promotes the use of good and appropriate lighting to lighting professionals and

associations. The Society publishes a trade magazine ‘VALO’.

Suomen Valomainosliitto ry is the Finnish alliance of illuminated advertising industry

Finnish Electro Technical Trade Association (STK) consists of 13 electrical wholesalers and 48 manufacturers.

Finnish association of interior architects SIO is a member organization of Ornamo (Finnish Association of

Designers). Ornamo has 6 member organizations altogether.

The Federation of Finnish Technology Industries is a lobbying organization for Finnish technology companies.

The federation has the aim of promoting competitiveness in the field of technology in Finland.

The Association of Electrical Engineers in Finland SIL promotes cooperation and professional knowledge among

the industry.

Fairs

Valolight-Fair is held in Helsinki. The fair is a part of the biggest furniture, interior decoration and design fair In

Finland, Habitare.

“The ValoLight event presents lighting products and solutions for public spaces, general lighting, homes and

interiors, light fittings and other sources of light; outdoor lighting products and solutions; and lighting supplies.

The Pro Light-area, which made its debut last year, will also be open this year. It is designed to boost the event's

appeal to lighting professionals.” The fair is held yearly in September (Messukeskus, Expo and convention center

Helsinki).

There is also the annual Housing Fair, organized in Finland during the summer months. The location varies as

they actually build a whole new neighborhood with houses, parks and roads. This fair is extremely popular and

gets a lot of media attention. It is open for the general public for a whole month. People can visit the brand new

houses often representing the latest architecture and building materials. In 2013, a Flemish switch

manufacturer’s product was used in one of the houses and the product is currently sold in Finland (Basalte -

www.basalte.be).

It is possible to be a general exhibitor or a main exhibitor in a house or try to get your product used in at least

one of the houses. An advertisement can also be placed on the Fair’s website.

SähköTeleValoAv exhibition is a professional event held in Jyväskylä. As the Finnish name implies, the exhibition

focuses on electricity, telecommunications, lighting and audiovisual solutions. Along with ValoLight Fair, it is the

largest exhibition in Finland that features lighting.

Recycling

Lamps can be put into SER-recycling points, mixed waste bins or hazardous waste points in Finland. SER-recycling

points are located, for example, in stores. The old electronics are used as materials for new products.

Shading

Shading is an important factor in reducing energy consumption in households. Nevertheless, Finland is located

in Northern Europe where natural light is highly limited during winter times.

Companies providing shading solutions in Finland are able to provide shading solutions for different kinds of

buildings to meet customers’ requests (Aurinkosuojaus Ry).

Besides more traditional shades and blinds, an effective way of decreasing the incoming sunlight is applying an

extremely thin layer of solar protection coating on windows. The coating blocks as much as half of all thermal

radiation. It also cuts off almost all ultraviolet rays and decreases glare (Ikkunawiki).

The association of sun shading in Finland

Aurinkosuojaus Ry is the association of sun shading in Finland. The association monitors the common interests

of its members in the field of vocational, technical, commercial and management issues in order to stimulate its

members to achieve a high professional level. The association monitors that their members follow good business

practices by keeping in contact with the authorities and other associations.

Current trends in shading

In Sweden, awnings have been more popular than in Finland. Instead of awnings, Finnish people tend to buy

venetian blinds (Yle news 2014).

Automation and lighting features in terrace awnings become more popular. It is also possible to install solar and

wind sensors and other technical features (Aurinkosuojaus Ry).
